To fix Restream’s “YouTube stream key invalid” error, first identify which connection is failing: the encoder-to-Restream connection or Restream’s connection to your YouTube channel. Copy the RTMP URL and key from the exact Restream stream or scheduled-event card you intend to use, update your encoder, then verify that the correct YouTube channel is connected and live streaming is enabled. The available official guidance does not establish a separate India-specific cause or fix.
First identify which stream key is being rejected
A Restream broadcast has two separate links: your encoder (such as OBS) sends video to Restream using Restream’s RTMP URL and stream key, and Restream forwards it to the YouTube channel you connected. A key error can therefore come from stale or mismatched encoder credentials, or from the YouTube destination connection. Restream’s key is static unless it is reset, but a newly created RTMP stream has its own key. Restream documents its RTMP URL and key workflow in its Help Center.
Check where the error appears and use the matching branch below. If the encoder cannot connect to Restream, start with the stream card and encoder values. If Restream cannot deliver to YouTube, inspect the connected channel and its live-stream eligibility.
Refresh the RTMP URL and key in your encoder
- Open the intended stream in Restream. Find the stream card for the broadcast you are trying to send. If this is a scheduled event, open that event and use its RTMP details—not credentials copied from another stream.
- Copy the current RTMP URL and stream key. Replace the saved values in OBS or your other encoder. A stale key may point to a different stream; using a regular stream’s credentials for a scheduled event can create a separate stream instead of attaching to the planned event.
- Check the encoder’s input format. Some encoders have separate server/URL and stream-key fields. Others expect the URL and key joined together. Enter them in the format the app requests; do not add a slash or combine the values unless its fields or instructions call for that format.
- Save and reconnect. Start the encoder again and check whether Restream receives the feed. If you reset a key, replace every saved instance that uses the old key.
In OBS: account link or manual entry
Restream documents two OBS setup routes: link your account, or select the manual “Use Stream Key” option and enter the RTMP details from the correct Restream stream card. Account linking avoids pasting a key; manual entry is useful when you need to verify exactly which key OBS is sending. OBS may autodetect a server based on location, but the official setup guidance does not identify server region as a cause of an invalid-key error.

For mobile encoder apps
Mobile broadcasting apps do not all present RTMP credentials the same way. Check whether the app has separate URL and key fields or expects a combined value. Confirm both values against the intended Restream stream or event before retrying.
Repair the YouTube destination connection
- Confirm the destination. In the Restream stream setup, make sure the intended YouTube channel is connected and enabled. If you manage more than one channel, check that the selected destination is the one where you expect the broadcast.
- Check live-stream access. YouTube must allow live streaming on the channel. If YouTube reports that live streaming is not enabled, follow YouTube’s channel-eligibility and enablement process before testing the Restream route.
- Reconnect YouTube in Restream if needed. Restream’s recovery guidance is to remove the YouTube channel and add it again. As part of that procedure, open the stream settings in YouTube Studio and click “Reset” next to the stream key, then reconnect the channel in Restream.
- Update direct-to-YouTube encoders after a reset. Resetting the YouTube key invalidates any old value used by an encoder that streams directly to YouTube. If your encoder sends to Restream, use the Restream credentials in the encoder and let Restream handle the connected destination.
Some YouTube events created through the YouTube mobile app are mobile-only; Restream says attempts to send those events through Restream fail. Use an event type that supports the Restream workflow instead.

Test the route to isolate the failing side
- Try a direct YouTube stream. If direct streaming also fails, the issue is likely on the YouTube side, such as channel live-stream access or its stream settings. Restream advises contacting YouTube support if the problem persists during a direct stream.
- Try a private or unlisted test stream where appropriate. This lets you check the route without making a public broadcast. Follow YouTube’s visibility and event settings carefully.
- Compare the result. If direct YouTube streaming works but Restream delivery does not, return to the Restream channel connection and verify that the encoder is using the credentials for the intended Restream stream card or event.

Does being in India change the fix?
The official Restream instructions cited here do not document an India-specific stream-key rule or remedy. They do not establish that a VPN, Indian ISP, local account setting, or a regional server causes this error. Follow the same credential and destination checks, and avoid changing network settings without evidence that they are involved.
