Wait for the page content you need—not just for navigation to finish—then take the screenshot. Selenium’s navigation wait can reach document.readyState == "complete" while a JavaScript-driven page is still rendering its useful content. Put an explicit wait for a visible main element, expected text, or a page-specific loaded marker immediately before the screenshot.
Wait for the content that should appear in the screenshot
Use a stable locator that becomes visible only when the content you want to capture is ready. This Python example waits up to 20 seconds for the page’s <main> element:

The timeout is an example, not a universal setting: choose one appropriate for the page and environment. If the main element appears before its meaningful text or data, wait for that expected text, a loaded-state marker, or another observable condition that represents the image you want. Selenium’s Expected Conditions include checks for visibility and text.
Wait for text when visibility is not enough
If a container is visible while its contents are still loading, waiting for expected text can be a better match for the screenshot:

Put the wait after the action that triggers rendering
For content revealed by a click, submit, or other interaction, perform the action first and then wait for the resulting state before capturing:

driver.save_screenshot("results.png")A fixed time.sleep() can be useful briefly to check whether timing is the issue, but it is a poor permanent synchronization method: it may be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. Selenium recommends condition-based waits for this kind of synchronization. See its Waiting Strategies documentation.
Understand page-load strategies
Selenium’s page-load strategy controls when a navigation command returns. It does not guarantee that a JavaScript application has finished rendering the particular content your screenshot needs.

Selenium explains that readyState concerns assets defined in the HTML; JavaScript can subsequently change the page. Its official waiting guidance describes this race. Changing the strategy changes navigation timing, not the need to synchronize against the application state.
Configure a strategy in Selenium 4 Python
Set the strategy on browser options before creating the driver. This example uses Chrome and eager; keep the explicit wait even with that setting:

driver.quit()Use normal, eager, or none according to whether navigation should wait for the load event, DOMContentLoaded, or neither. The correct choice depends on the page and workflow; none alone makes a screenshot more reliable.
Troubleshoot a screenshot that remains white
- Confirm the destination. Check that the browser reached the intended URL and that the title or expected page content matches it.
- Check what the wait actually proves. A presence check can succeed for an element hidden in the page. Use a visibility condition or wait for distinctive visible text or an application-specific loaded marker.
- Inspect the page and browser/driver logs. Look for navigation errors, JavaScript failures, or evidence that the destination is genuinely serving an empty state. The right diagnosis depends on the target site; no particular site or failure is assumed here.
- Compare another browser. If the same command behaves differently, reproduce it in another browser if available. Selenium’s troubleshooting guidance notes that some apparent Selenium problems originate in the underlying drivers and recommends comparing browsers to help rule that out.
- Use a longer delay only as a diagnostic. If waiting longer changes the result, that suggests a synchronization issue; replace the delay with an explicit condition for the content you need.
Avoid mixing wait types
Do not combine implicit waits with explicit waits in the same test. Selenium warns that doing so can produce unpredictable total wait times. Prefer explicit waits tied to the screenshot’s required page state; see Selenium’s wait guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does `document.readyState == “complete”` still produce a white screenshot?
It indicates that document loading reached its completion state, but JavaScript may still be rendering or updating the application content. Wait for the specific visible content the screenshot needs.

Use an explicit wait for a meaningful page condition as the lasting fix. A temporary sleep can help diagnose timing, but it cannot adapt to faster or slower page loads.
Can I fix this by switching to `eager` or `none`?
Those strategies change when navigation returns. They do not replace an explicit wait for dynamic content.
