If your YouTube stream looks blurry while using Restream, first check what your encoder is actually sending: resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval. For H.264 at 1080p, YouTube’s live-stream recommendations are 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps; the right target still depends on your upload connection and stream stability. Then compare the incoming feed with YouTube’s stream-health information and playback, because a difference alone does not prove Restream degraded the video.

Start with the encoder output, not the preview

A source or canvas set to 1080p does not prove that the encoder is sending 1080p. Check the stream output itself, along with its frame rate, video codec, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval. YouTube’s live ingestion guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of 4 seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • Match output resolution and frame rate to the material you are streaming. More motion and higher frame rates generally need more bitrate to preserve comparable detail.
  • Confirm the selected codec before using a bitrate figure; YouTube’s recommended values differ by codec.
  • Do not maximize resolution, frame rate, and bitrate blindly. A setting your connection cannot sustain may be less useful than a lower, stable output.

Use YouTube’s live bitrate recommendations

For an H.264 live stream, YouTube’s current live ingestion table recommends the following targets. These are live-stream recommendations, not the separate bitrate guidance for uploading a finished video.

Output H.264 recommended bitrate H.265/HEVC or AV1 recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps

These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder guidance. Verify the codec and the matching resolution-and-frame-rate row before applying one. Restream’s general guidance gives 4,500–6,000 Kbps as a 1080p30 starting point, but also directs users to check destination requirements. For a YouTube-targeted stream, use YouTube’s current live recommendations as the destination-specific reference, then reduce the target if your connection cannot sustain it. Restream’s general settings guide is at Best encoder settings for live streaming.

Check whether your upload connection can sustain the setting

Measure upload speed under conditions similar to the actual broadcast, including other devices and network use. Download speed is not a reliable substitute for upload capacity. YouTube says the total streamed bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Its guidance is at Streaming tips.

  1. Estimate the total outgoing stream bitrate, including audio, and compare it with available upload bandwidth.
  2. Leave about 20% of upload capacity unused rather than allocating the full measured rate to the stream.
  3. If bandwidth fluctuates or the stream-health panel reports problems, lower bitrate first. If that is not enough, reduce resolution or frame rate until the connection is stable.
  4. Retest with the network in use as it will be during the real event; a quiet-network speed result may not represent broadcast conditions.

Restream’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking upload capacity and server selection, avoiding unusual or unsupported settings, and reducing bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or encoder preset when stability is a problem. It lists 1.5 Mbps for 720p and 3 Mbps for 1080p as minimum troubleshooting thresholds; these are not substitutes for YouTube’s recommended bitrate table. See Restream’s encoder-quality troubleshooting guide.

Test the stream and read its health messages

Before making a public broadcast, test with representative movement and audio. A static slide can look clean at a bitrate that fails on a fast-moving scene. During the test, inspect YouTube’s stream-health information and messages as well as what a viewer sees. YouTube’s guidance explains its live settings and processing at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Change one setting at a time and test again. If you lower bitrate, resolution, and frame rate together, you may stabilize the stream but will not know which adjustment addressed the problem.

Separate Restream relay from YouTube playback

Restream says its regular relay passes the incoming stream through without modifying it; destination platforms process the stream themselves. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Therefore, a difference between a Restream-side preview and YouTube playback does not by itself establish that Restream reduced quality. Compare the encoder’s actual output, any available Restream-side view, YouTube’s stream-health information, and the playback quality options. See Restream’s explanation of platform-specific quality and YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

Without the encoder settings, network conditions, and stream-health observations, it is not possible to identify the cause of a particular blurry stream from the symptom alone.

When Restream transcoding is relevant

Restream offers separately purchased, per-channel transcoding for changing output settings. Its documentation lists maximum output of 1920×1080, 6,000 Kbps video, 320 Kbps audio, and 60 fps, and reports an average 2–3 seconds of added delay. The feature may suit workflows that need different channel outputs, but Restream does not document it as a general cure for blur or as a way to restore detail already lost in the incoming feed. See Restream transcoding.

Before considering an output change, establish that the incoming feed is clean and identify the actual destination requirement. The transcoding page describes an add-on workflow, not a replacement for fixing a low-quality or unstable encoder feed.
