If you deliberately captured a full page—or the image includes extra content—use Pillow to crop a rectangle measured and verified against that specific browser and driver output. Selenium does not provide one universal formula for converting window dimensions into crop coordinates.
Check whether your screenshot needs cropping
In Selenium’s Python WebDriver API, get_screenshot_as_png() returns PNG bytes for the current window, while get_screenshot_as_file(filename) saves a PNG. A normal current-window capture may already show the viewport you want. Inspect the image before adding a crop step; cropping an already correct screenshot can cut off page content.
Selenium also lets you get and set window dimensions and the window rectangle. Those settings help establish the browser’s size, but they are not a guaranteed pixel-by-pixel crop rectangle for every browser, driver, headed or headless configuration, or screenshot method. Crop a verified rectangle with Python and Pillow
Install Pillow in the same Python environment as your script:

driver.quit()The sample rectangle is illustrative, not a universal viewport size. Pillow’s crop box uses left, upper, right and lower pixel coordinates; the right and lower edges mark the boundary rather than the last included pixel. Set the values from the actual PNG and check the saved result visually. For a reusable script, ensure the driver is closed even if navigation, capture or cropping raises an error—for example, by managing it with a try/finally block.

How to establish the crop bounds
- Capture the page using the exact browser, driver, headed or headless mode, and screenshot method you plan to use.
- Read the PNG’s pixel width and height. Do not assume these match CSS pixels or the dimensions returned by Selenium.
- Identify the viewport rectangle in the screenshot. Validate its origin and scale against recognizable page content or a known test page.
- Crop, save, and inspect the output. Repeat the validation after changing the browser, device scale, driver configuration, or capture method.
When the screenshot is a standard current-window capture, removing browser chrome is not usually part of this task: the documented Python WebDriver method captures the browsing context rather than a desktop screenshot. Verify unusual driver output rather than applying a browser-chrome offset by assumption.
Handle full-page screenshots differently
Some Selenium APIs can capture a full document instead of just the current viewport. Firefox’s Python API exposes full-document screenshot methods; Selenium’s Ruby TakesScreenshot documentation describes a full_page option when supported. These are binding- and browser-specific features, not a universal Selenium method. See the Firefox Python API, version 4.50.0 and Ruby TakesScreenshot API, which labels that module a private API that may be removed.

If you chose a full-document method but need only the viewport, apply the same inspection process: determine where the viewport falls in the produced image, account for its scale and origin, then crop to measured pixel bounds. A full-page screenshot may include content below the fold; the right crop depends on the actual image and cannot safely be inferred from window size alone.
Common problems and fixes
- The crop cuts off content or includes too much. The rectangle does not match the PNG’s pixel bounds. Print
image.size, confirm the viewport’s origin and scale for this setup, and adjust the coordinates. - The crop coordinates exceed the image. Check that the right and bottom edges are no greater than the image width and height, and that left is less than right and top is less than bottom.
- The output is already the viewport, but cropping removes page elements. Use the original screenshot without cropping. A normal current-window capture may already be the desired result.
- The page is blank or incomplete in the capture. The screenshot call itself does not guarantee that asynchronous content has finished rendering. Capture after the page reaches the visual state you need, then inspect the PNG before diagnosing the crop.
- A full-page capture does not align with the window dimensions. Do not use window dimensions as a universal image crop formula. Measure the rectangle in the full-page output for that specific API and setup.

Does Selenium’s normal Python screenshot include browser toolbars?
The documented current-window WebDriver screenshot captures the browsing context, not a desktop screenshot. Confirm the output if your driver behaves unusually.

Can I use Selenium window size as the Pillow crop box?
Not reliably. Window dimensions are useful for browser setup, but the screenshot’s pixel bounds and scale must be checked for the exact configuration.
Does every Selenium binding support full-page screenshots?
No. The cited full-document methods are binding-specific: Firefox Python exposes them, and Ruby documents a full-page option when supported.
