You can use a Raspberry Pi as the local playback and encoder host for a pre-recorded YouTube Live broadcast: make the channel eligible, create an encoder event in YouTube Studio, configure software on the Pi to send the video to YouTube, then check the preview and stream health. There is no India-specific encoder procedure established here; the YouTube requirements below are general platform guidance. The main hardware caveat is important: Raspberry Pi 5 encodes H.264 in software, not with a hardware H.264 encoder, so test your chosen Pi and media before relying on it for an event.
Before you start: channel eligibility and what “pre-recorded live” means
A pre-recorded YouTube Live stream is a video file sent by an encoder as a live broadcast. The file is not a camera feed, but the event still needs an active encoder connection when it begins. Scheduling the event can create a watch page in advance; it does not send the video by itself.
YouTube’s general requirements say the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. The platform also says a person must be at least 16 to live stream. Check current eligibility and setup steps in YouTube’s encoder-streaming guide before planning the broadcast.
What you need
- A Raspberry Pi with a suitable power supply and local storage containing the video file.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the complete stream bitrate.
- A playback-and-encoder workflow capable of sending a continuous feed to YouTube using RTMP or RTMPS.
- Access to YouTube Studio to create or schedule the event and retrieve its server URL and stream key.
The specific operating-system recipe and FFmpeg command depend on the installed software build, media codecs, Pi model, and chosen settings. No exact command is established here, so validate any command or application workflow against those details rather than treating a generic command as guaranteed.

Choose a Pi with its encoding limits in mind
Raspberry Pi’s documentation distinguishes H.265 hardware decoding from H.264 encoding. Pi 5 has H.265 hardware decoding enabled by default, but its H.264 encoding is software-based. Raspberry Pi documentation describes 1080p30 as readily achievable on Pi 5 software encoding; that is not a guarantee for every file, playback process, or encoder configuration. See the Raspberry Pi video and codec notes and its H.264 encoding performance note.
Pi 4 has a hardware H.264 encoder, while Pi 5 uses software encoding. The available evidence does not establish a current price comparison or a measured head-to-head streaming test. Choose based on the actual workload and verify that the selected device can play and encode your chosen media continuously.

Recommended YouTube encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps as a standard audio recommendation. For SDR video, its advanced settings recommend Rec. 709. The bitrate ranges below are YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not a guarantee that a particular connection or Pi will sustain them.
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6–17 Mbps |
These figures and the keyframe guidance come from YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance. Keep the keyframe interval at two seconds and do not exceed four seconds. A 720p30 or 1080p30 target may be more practical to start with on a Pi than a higher frame rate, but that is a cautious recommendation based on the Pi 5 software-encoding caveat, not a tested Pi benchmark.

Match bitrate to upload capacity
Use upload speed, not advertised download speed, to decide whether the connection can sustain the stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available as headroom and testing before the event. Its streaming tips explain the network checks. Set the stream bitrate below what the connection can sustain, and assess the total outbound bitrate if your setup includes other network traffic.
Prefer encrypted ingest when available
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP transport using TLS. If your encoder supports it, select the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room. Read YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and keep the stream key private.

Set up and run the broadcast
- Confirm the channel is eligible. In YouTube Studio, check that live streaming is enabled and the channel meets YouTube’s verification and restriction requirements. Do this before the planned event, not just before pressing Go Live.
- Create or schedule an encoder event. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one, then choose the encoder workflow. If you schedule it, set the date and time for your intended audience and use the time zone shown in the interface; Indian creators should check that the scheduled time matches their local plan.
- Copy the event’s connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key for that event. Use the RTMPS URL if supported. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in public screenshots, source repositories, or shared command history. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through the YouTube interface.
- Prepare the media on the Pi. Place the video on local storage and confirm that the chosen playback/encoder software can read its codecs and send a continuous output. Use the same file, audio, output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the test that you plan to use on air.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the event’s server URL and stream key in the encoder. Set H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, the selected bitrate and output format, and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps where the workflow exposes these settings. For SDR, use Rec. 709.
- Test the connection before the event. Start the encoder early enough for YouTube Live Control Room to receive the feed. Inspect the video and audio preview, then check stream health. If YouTube reports a problem, correct it and confirm the preview again before making the event public or proceeding.
- Start and monitor the live event. When the event is due, verify that the encoder is sending the intended file and that YouTube shows a healthy incoming stream. Monitor stream health during the broadcast. When finished, stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending.
Copyright, reused material, and the watch page
A video being pre-recorded does not make it exempt from YouTube’s rules. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the video, music, images, and other material it contains, and follow YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. A scheduled event can give viewers a watch page to find in advance, but the Pi still needs to send the feed when the event starts. Do not assume that using an encoder changes how YouTube evaluates the content.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | Wrong event URL or stream key, or encoder not started | Confirm that the URL and key belong to the correct Live Control Room event, then restart the encoder and watch for the preview. |
| Stream health warns about connection quality | Upload capacity is too low or unstable for the configured bitrate | Check actual upload speed, reduce the bitrate or output target, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. |
| Video stutters or the Pi struggles | Playback plus software encoding may exceed the selected Pi’s capacity | Test the exact media and settings; consider a lower frame rate or resolution. Pi 5 H.264 encoding is software-based, so do not assume the board has a hardware H.264 encoder. |
| Video appears but audio is missing or wrong | Audio track, codec, or encoder configuration is not being sent as expected | Test the same file in advance, inspect the YouTube preview, and verify the selected audio track and AAC configuration. |
| The key appears in a screenshot or command history | Stream key was handled as ordinary text rather than a credential | Remove public copies where possible and replace or reset the key in YouTube Studio before the broadcast. |
| The scheduled watch page exists but viewers see no live feed | The event is scheduled, but the encoder has not begun sending | Start the Pi encoder and confirm that Live Control Room receives the incoming stream. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the point is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving a Pi or other computer online at home, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera or to other platforms. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
