In eligible regions, creators may qualify for earlier access to fan-funding and Shopping features at a lower threshold. Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads, and YouTube Premium revenue require the higher threshold. In either case, meeting the numbers only makes a channel eligible for review; it does not guarantee acceptance.
Which YPP threshold do you need?
There are two main qualification levels. The lower level can unlock certain features before a channel qualifies for ad and YouTube Premium revenue. The figures below reflect YouTube’s requirements as of October 2026; feature availability and rules can change, so check the Earn area in YouTube Studio and YouTube’s current help pages before applying.

Expanded YPP is available only in eligible countries and regions. A creator who meets its lower threshold may still need to meet separate requirements for an individual feature. YouTube’s expanded YPP information explains the access level and its availability.
What counts toward the thresholds?
Watch hours
The 4,000-hour standard route and 3,000-hour expanded route use eligible public watch time from long-form videos over the preceding 12 months. Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward these hour totals. YouTube also excludes watch hours from private, unlisted, or deleted videos; ad campaigns; and livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to video on demand.

Shorts views
The Shorts routes use qualified views of public Shorts in the Shorts Feed during the preceding 90 days. Private, unlisted, or deleted Shorts, ad-campaign views, and image posts in the Shorts Feed do not count.
Paid promotion and progress tracking
Views and watch time from paid ad campaigns do not count toward YPP qualification thresholds. Track your channel’s own progress in YouTube Studio under Earn; the displayed figures are more useful than estimates based on public video counters.

How to apply and what YouTube reviews
- In YouTube Studio, open Earn and check which eligibility requirement remains unmet. If you are in a region with expanded YPP, Studio will show whether that route is available to your channel.
- Before applying, confirm that your channel follows YouTube’s channel monetization policies, has no active Community Guidelines strikes, has 2-Step Verification enabled, and has access to advanced features.
- Set up or link one active AdSense for YouTube account when prompted. YouTube’s overview says a linked account must be in place or ready to set up through YouTube Studio.
- Submit the application through the Earn area once YouTube Studio shows that you can apply. YouTube reviews the channel against its policies; reaching a threshold does not guarantee acceptance.
- If approved, review and accept the terms or modules for the specific earning features you want to use. Different features have different eligibility rules and terms.
Reviewers may assess the channel as a whole, including its theme, most-viewed and newest videos, the share of watch time associated with particular content, metadata, and the About section. YouTube expects original, authentic content. Reused material needs meaningful transformation, and channels built around mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative output may fail policy review. How creators earn after joining YPP
YPP offers several types of revenue. Access is not identical across features: age, geography, content, policy standing, and acceptance of the relevant terms can affect availability.
- Watch Page ads: ads shown or streamed on eligible public videos on YouTube’s Watch Page.
- Shorts Feed ads: revenue sharing for eligible Shorts views after accepting the Shorts Monetization Module. Views from before acceptance are not eligible for sharing under that module.
- YouTube Premium: a share of eligible subscription revenue associated with Premium members watching a creator’s content.
- Fan funding: channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks, where each feature is available and the creator qualifies.
- Shopping: eligible creators may connect their own store and, where available, feature products from other brands through YouTube’s Shopping affiliate program.
YouTube publishes different revenue-share bases for different features. The percentages below are YouTube’s stated terms as of October 2026, and apply when the creator accepts the associated module. They are not interchangeable shares of gross ad revenue; a creator’s agreements in YouTube Studio control.

These terms do not predict an individual channel’s earnings. YouTube does not guarantee that a creator will be paid or promise a particular amount. Finalized earnings appear in AdSense for YouTube and may be affected by adjustments, invalid traffic, claims or disputes, withholding, and local taxes. Why ads can appear before you earn
YouTube may show ads on videos from channels that have not qualified for the higher YPP threshold. Seeing an ad is not proof that the channel is receiving an ad-revenue share. A channel must qualify, be accepted, and meet the terms for the relevant feature before earning that revenue.
Keep eligibility after approval
YPP participation is not permanent merely because a channel once passed review or still meets its subscriber and view counts. YouTube says it continues checking channels and may remove monetization for policy violations regardless of threshold totals. It also reserves the right to remove monetization from channels with no uploads or posts for six months or more.
- Make sure borrowed or licensed material is transformed substantially and does not become repetitive, minimally altered uploads.
- Review titles, descriptions, thumbnails, and the About section for accuracy and consistency with the channel’s actual content.
- Use YouTube Studio’s Earn area to monitor feature eligibility, notices, and terms that need acceptance.
Announced YPP changes for February 1, 2027
YouTube announced updated YPP terms and activity requirements beginning February 1, 2027. These are announced future changes, not requirements already in effect as of October 2026. YouTube says creators must accept applicable updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027 to continue earning through the associated features.

Under the announcement, YouTube will consider a channel active if it meets at least one of these measures: 1,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, 1 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, or uploads two long-form videos or five Shorts within every 90-day period. The announcement also discusses changes to YouTube Premium Lite revenue. Review YouTube’s YPP terms and activity requirements announcement and Studio notices as the start date approaches.

My Shorts watch time is high, but the 4,000-hour bar has not moved
That is expected: Shorts Feed watch time is excluded from the public watch-hours route. Check the Shorts-view route instead, or build eligible long-form public watch time.

The qualifying numbers are only part of the process. Confirm any additional requirements in Earn, including regional availability, channel policy status, 2-Step Verification, advanced features, and the AdSense for YouTube setup. Then apply and wait for review; the threshold itself is not approval.
My views or hours are lower in Earn than on my videos
The public counters can include activity that does not qualify. Private, unlisted, deleted, paid-campaign, and otherwise excluded activity is not counted in the same way; the Shorts and livestream exclusions also differ from standard public video views. Use the eligibility totals shown in Studio.

Can I earn Shorts revenue for views from before I joined?
YouTube says Shorts views from before acceptance of the Shorts Monetization Module are not eligible for Shorts ad revenue sharing under that module. Accept the applicable module before relying on future Shorts revenue.
