To change prerecorded videos at specific times while keeping a YouTube broadcast live, schedule the content in the system that plays the videos—not in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s scheduled-stream feature sets up an upcoming broadcast and its watch page; the encoder supplies the live feed. For a sequence that simply repeats, use a playlist. For a change at a particular time, you need a separate scheduling or automation layer in your playout system.
First, decide what you mean by “schedule”
- Schedule the broadcast: Set an upcoming start time in YouTube Studio so viewers can find the watch page and set reminders. This does not choose which video plays inside the feed.
- Rotate videos in order: Play a playlist and loop it. This suits a repeating sequence, but does not by itself select a particular video at a specified hour.
- Switch at a clock time: If video A must play at 9 a.m. and video B at noon while the broadcast remains online, the playout system needs a time-based scheduling or automation function. The OBS documentation described below confirms playlists and media playback, but does not establish a built-in clock-time scheduler.
Schedule an upcoming YouTube broadcast
Use this when you want to announce a future broadcast. YouTube Studio schedules the broadcast, while your encoder still provides its video and audio.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- Open Manage, choose Schedule Stream, then reuse a previous stream’s settings or create new ones.
- Set the broadcast details and scheduled time, then save. YouTube creates an upcoming watch page; viewers can find the scheduled stream and set a reminder.
- In the encoder, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. YouTube Help’s encoder guide says, “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the stream.
- Start the encoder when you are ready to send the feed. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings can let the encoder start or stop the broadcast when those options are enabled. Check the settings and preview in Live Control Room before relying on an unattended start.
These steps schedule a broadcast, not a sequence of content changes inside an existing continuous feed. For current instructions, see YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream. Interface labels can change.
Play a repeating sequence locally with OBS
OBS can put media into the outgoing program. Its Media Source is for an individual media file; its VLC Video source can use a playlist and provides loop and shuffle controls. These are ways to play or rotate content, not proof of clock-time selection for an individual item.

- In OBS, add the appropriate media source to the scene that is sent to YouTube. Use Media Source for one file, or VLC Video when you need a playlist.
- For a VLC playlist, add the files in the desired order. Enable looping if the sequence should repeat; enable shuffle only if a changing, non-fixed order is acceptable.
- Check that the selected scene is the one going to the stream, then inspect the preview for picture, audio, and transitions before going live.
- Connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key, and start the encoder. Keep the computer, OBS, media files, and internet connection available for as long as the local setup is responsible for the feed.
OBS scenes and sources let you compose the program sent out by the encoder. The official OBS material here does not verify a native clock-time scene scheduler or a particular plugin recipe. If timing a specific video is essential, select a playout system with an explicitly documented schedule or add an automation layer that you can test. Do not assume that a playlist’s order or shuffle setting means “play this file at noon.” See OBS: Media Sources and OBS: Sources Guide.
Choose a playout setup for your requirement
| Approach | Best fit | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio scheduled broadcast | Announcing an upcoming broadcast and giving viewers a watch page and reminder option. | Which prerecorded video plays at a chosen time. |
| OBS Media Source | Playing an individual file from a local encoder setup. | A documented clock-time schedule for changing files. |
| OBS VLC Video playlist | Playing a playlist in sequence, with loop or shuffle controls. | Choosing a particular playlist item at a specified hour. |
| Cloud 24/7 playout service | Keeping prerecorded content on air without maintaining a local encoder computer. | Specific provider pricing, availability, schedule capabilities, or service-level measurements unless the provider documents them. |
YouTube’s encoder guide identifies cloud tools Gyre and Upstream as examples for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. That reference does not establish their current prices, availability, or exact scheduling features; verify those details with each provider before choosing one. YouTube’s guide is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Test the feed before leaving it unattended
- Check the YouTube preview for the correct video, scene, and audio before and after a scheduled change.
- Confirm that the stream is accessible to the intended audience and that privacy or visibility settings are correct.
- Monitor picture and sound. YouTube advises: “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.”
- If the playout service offers recovery or failover, test what happens when the connection or feed is interrupted rather than assuming recovery works as intended.
- Review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies for every video and audio track. Permission to upload a recording does not necessarily establish permission to broadcast all material in it.
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is a platform threshold, not a recommended duration for a continuous broadcast. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams and YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
Troubleshoot common scheduling and playback problems
The scheduled stream exists, but the video has not changed
YouTube Studio schedules the broadcast, not the content inside the encoder feed. Set the change in the playout system. If you need an exact time, verify that the system supports clock-time scheduling rather than merely playlist playback.

The playlist repeats, but in the wrong order
Review the playlist entries and their order in OBS’s VLC Video source. Turn off shuffle if you need a fixed sequence, and confirm looping is configured as intended.
YouTube shows no incoming video
Check that the encoder is running and connected with the correct YouTube stream URL and stream key. Confirm that the intended scene and media source are active, then inspect the YouTube preview for an incoming feed.

A scheduled broadcast does not start or stop as expected
Check the auto-start and auto-stop settings in YouTube’s live-stream setup. These behaviors depend on the settings being enabled and the encoder supplying or ending the feed as expected.
The stream is live but has missing audio or an unexpected scene
Inspect the OBS preview, active scene, media source, and audio meters. Verify the sound and image in the outgoing feed, not only the local file, and monitor the YouTube stream after each content change.
