Set up YouTube Live first, configure OBS with YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, then run a long test before relying on the stream.
What you need for a 24/7 stream
- A Mac mini running macOS 11 or later. OBS lists support for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, but its baseline requirements do not guarantee that a particular stream will run smoothly; resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity all affect performance. OBS system requirements.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned start. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- OBS Studio, an internet connection with reliable sustained upload capacity, and the video and audio sources your stream requires.
- For better local network reliability, a wired Ethernet connection from the Mac mini to your router or switch, where practical. Ethernet does not fix an under-capacity or interrupted ISP connection.
- A continuity plan for power and network equipment. A UPS can help keep the Mac mini and router or ONT powered through some interruptions, but its runtime depends on the real combined load. It cannot keep an ISP’s upstream equipment online if that equipment loses power.
Enable YouTube Live and get the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. If live streaming has not been enabled on the channel before, start activation early; YouTube says this can take up to 24 hours.
- Create or select an encoder stream in the Live Control Room and locate its stream URL and stream key.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not post it publicly or include it in a screen recording or tutorial.

Configure OBS for YouTube
- Open OBS Studio on the Mac mini. In OBS, open Settings and choose Stream.
- Set the service to YouTube, then connect your account if you use the available account integration, or choose the stream-key option and enter YouTube’s stream URL and key as prompted. Treat the key as a credential.
- In Settings > Output, set the streaming rate control to CBR and choose a bitrate suited to your selected resolution and frame rate and to the upload capacity you have measured. YouTube publishes bitrate guidance by video format; consult its current table rather than applying one bitrate to every India connection. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS when configuring the server connection, as YouTube recommends.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate your Mac mini and connection can sustain. Start conservatively if you do not yet know the system’s limits; increase quality only after representative testing.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, but this does not remove the need for a stable source feed from OBS. YouTube also recommends testing your upload bitrate with a speed test. A single speed-test result is not a guarantee of continuous capacity, so leave meaningful headroom and judge the setup by an extended test under realistic conditions.
Test the actual Mac mini and internet connection
- Build the OBS scene you intend to use, including the actual video, audio, overlays and other sources. Scene complexity can change the load.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test stream with representative movement and audio, using the intended resolution, frame rate and bitrate.
- Keep the test running long enough to expose heat, network variation and other sustained-load problems. There is no universal test duration that proves a stream will never fail.
- Watch OBS statistics for dropped frames and rendering or encoding lag. Also monitor stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- If the test is unstable, reduce bitrate, resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or investigate the upload connection. Change one factor at a time and repeat the test.
OBS cautions that meeting its listed system requirements does not guarantee that a particular stream will work. The OBS baseline is Intel or Apple Silicon with macOS 11 (“Big Sur”) or later; actual capability depends on the workload and encoder. OBS system requirements.

Plan power and network continuity
A 24/7 broadcast can stop if any essential part of the path fails: the Mac mini, router, ONT or modem, local network, ISP service, or YouTube connection. Prefer wired Ethernet when feasible and consider a UPS for the equipment you need to keep running. Select a UPS based on the combined real load and the ride-through time you need; include the router and ONT, and any display that must remain powered.
Apple’s India specifications for the currently listed Mac mini family state a maximum continuous power figure of 155 W. That is not a measurement of an individual Mac mini’s OBS draw and is not a suitable standalone number for estimating UPS runtime. Check the specifications for the exact model you are considering: Apple’s cited page is for the Mac mini family identified there, and product specifications can change. Manage long-running broadcasts and archives
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 project should therefore have an explicit plan for managing long sessions and any recordings you want to keep; do not assume one uninterrupted broadcast will automatically produce a complete archive. Also ensure the material you broadcast is authorized for use. YouTube’s copyright rules apply to live streams as well as other uploads. If you use music, video clips or other third-party material, verify that you have the rights needed for the intended use. A continuous stream is not exempt from copyright enforcement or other YouTube policies.

Troubleshoot common failures
- You cannot start streaming: Check whether live streaming is enabled; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Verify that OBS is using the correct YouTube stream URL and key, and that the key has not been changed or revoked.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or viewers see buffering: Check sustained upload capacity, not only the advertised plan speed. Reduce the OBS bitrate or output resolution and frame rate, use Ethernet if possible, and retest with realistic audio and motion.
- OBS shows dropped frames: This commonly points to network congestion or an unstable route to YouTube. Check the wired or wireless path, router and ISP service; lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it.
- OBS shows rendering or encoding lag: Reduce scene complexity, resolution or frame rate, or try an encoder option supported by the exact Mac mini. Re-test the actual workload; the OBS compatibility baseline alone does not establish performance.
- The stream stops during a power event: Confirm that the UPS powers the Mac mini and network equipment, and that the ISP link’s upstream equipment remains available. A UPS at home cannot guarantee service through an outage beyond the equipment it powers.
- A long stream has no complete archive: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Plan how you will handle long sessions and preserve recordings independently if needed.
