Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To add a countdown before every story, make the countdown a separate video segment, put it before the story, then join the two. Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with stream copy only when the files have compatible streams and parameters; if you need to add text, normalize mismatched media, or otherwise filter the inputs, use the concat filter and re-encode. For a reusable on-screen countdown, FFmpeg’s drawtext filter can render centered numerals over a generated background.
Choose the countdown format and join method
First decide whether the countdown is visual, spoken or musical, or both. A prepared countdown clip is usually the most straightforward repeatable workflow: place it before each story in the input order. If your countdown needs to be generated or overlaid, or if the source files differ in ways that need correction, plan to filter and re-encode rather than assuming a direct copy will work.
| Situation | Use | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Countdown and story already have compatible streams and you want to avoid re-encoding | Concat demuxer with a file list and -c copy |
Corresponding streams, codecs, time bases, and parameters must be compatible; duration mismatches can affect timestamps. See the concat demuxer documentation. |
| You need filters, overlays, normalization, or re-encoding | Concat filter in a complex filtergraph | Build matching video and audio streams for the inputs you are joining. FFmpeg’s FAQ says of the concat filter: “This operation is recommended if you need to re-encode.” See the concat FAQ. |
| Inputs have different dimensions, frame rates, codecs, or audio layouts | Normalize or filter the streams, then concatenate with re-encoding | The needed filter chain depends on the actual media; do not assume stream copy is suitable. |
Prepare a countdown clip and join it to one story
Make an ffconcat list
Create a plain-text file named story-list.ffconcat in the same directory as the media, with the countdown listed first and the story second:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'countdown.mp4'
file 'story.mp4'
For automatic format recognition, the first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no byte-order mark or characters before it. Quote and escape paths according to ffconcat syntax, especially when filenames contain spaces or special characters. The demuxer’s file-list documentation explains the format and path handling.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Join with stream copy when compatible
Run this from the directory containing the list and files:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i story-list.ffconcat -c copy story-with-countdown.mp4
-f concat selects the concat demuxer; -safe 0 permits paths that the default safe-mode rules may reject, so use it only with a list you control. -c copy copies streams rather than encoding them. It is conditional, not a fix for incompatible media: the demuxer expects corresponding streams with compatible codecs and time bases. It adjusts timestamps, and inaccurate declared durations or differing segment lengths can create gaps or artifacts. Check the demuxer requirements before using this command on arbitrary files.

Repeat the pattern for multiple stories
For each output, make a list with the countdown followed by that story, and give each output a distinct filename. Test one representative join first; inspect the transition and listen across it before processing a full batch. Batch scripting varies by shell and operating system, so adapt path escaping and quoting to your environment.
Generate a simple on-screen countdown with drawtext
FFmpeg’s drawtext filter can draw and center text over video. This example creates a one-second black video with a centered white “3”; it is a title-frame example, not a complete changing countdown:

ffmpeg -f lavfi -i color=c=black:s=1280x720:d=1
-vf "drawtext=text='3':fontcolor=white:fontsize=120:x=(w-text_w)/2:y=(h-text_h)/2"
-t 1 countdown-frame.mp4
To make a timed 3-2-1 sequence, either use a time-based text expression or render separate short numeral segments and join them. Validate the expression and escaping with your installed build. The drawtext documentation covers text options and expressions. Filter availability depends on the libraries included in the FFmpeg build; check locally before building a workflow around it.
When you need to combine generated countdown media with a story using filters, use -filter_complex for the multi-input graph. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation distinguishes it from -vf and -af, which apply video and audio filters to individual streams.

Add a spoken or musical countdown
Prepare the voice or music as an audio segment and place it before the story audio. If the countdown also has video, make sure the output contains aligned video and audio streams; decide whether the countdown should have silence, narration, or a music bed under it. FFmpeg provides audio delay, fade, and crossfade filters, but there is no official children’s-story duration, sound design, or loudness target established here. Choose those editorially and check the transition by listening to the rendered result.

- The concat command reports mismatched streams or fails: the inputs may not have corresponding compatible streams, codecs, time bases, or parameters. Inspect the files and use a filter-and-re-encode workflow if they need normalization.
- There is a gap, jump, or artifact at the join: segment durations or timestamps may not align as expected. The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps, but inaccurate durations can affect the result. Verify the boundary; switch to a normalized concat-filter workflow if necessary.
drawtextis unavailable: the installed build may lack its required libraries. Check the available filters and local documentation, or use a pre-rendered countdown clip instead.- Text is missing or misplaced: check the font availability, expression, and quoting for your shell and build. Test a single frame or short clip before rendering the full sequence.
- Audio is clipped, repeated, or absent: confirm that each input has the expected audio stream and that the output graph connects the intended streams. Preview and listen across the countdown-to-story boundary.
The online FFmpeg documentation follows a moving revision: the project says it is regenerated nightly for the newest revision and advises consulting local documentation for older versions. Check the documentation landing page and your installed build when an option or filter behaves differently.
