In OBS Studio, add a local ASMR video as a Media Source, enable Loop, and leave Close file when inactive disabled while testing. This is the simplest baseline, not a guarantee of a seamless audio boundary: a gap can come from the media file, the source’s activation behavior, or the capture path. Compare the original file with an OBS recording at the same repeat point to narrow it down.
Set up a simple loop first
- In OBS, add the video to a scene as a Media Source. This source supports video and audio files. OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Support for a listed format does not guarantee identical behavior for every encoding variant. See the OBS Media Sources reference.
- Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. OBS defines this setting as specifying whether a file plays again once playback has completed.
- For the first test, leave Close file when inactive disabled and keep the source visible in the scene. OBS warns that when this option is enabled, returning to a scene that shows the source may produce a short period with nothing showing while the file reloads. That is a source reload issue, distinct from a gap precisely at the end-to-start boundary.
- Play through at least one repeat and, if you are streaming, make a short OBS recording so you can inspect the captured result.
OBS labels and behavior can vary by version. If the properties differ from these names, note your OBS version and the source type before changing several settings at once.
Understand looping versus source activation
Loop controls what happens when playback reaches the end of the file. Restart playback when source becomes active concerns what happens when the source becomes active; it is not documented as a seamless-loop control. Enable restart-on-activation only if you want the file to start from the beginning when the source becomes active, such as after switching scenes.
If the interruption happens after switching scenes or hiding and showing the source, investigate activation and visibility behavior separately from the repeat boundary. Community troubleshooting discussions point users toward these controls, but do not establish a guaranteed fix for loop gaps: Automatically play media and Source doesn’t restart when active.

When VLC Video Source makes sense
For one local video, Media Source is a straightforward starting point. Consider VLC Video Source if you need a playlist or VLC-backed media support. VLC Video Source has a Loop Playlist option, Visibility Behaviour controls, an Audio Track selector, and a Network caching (ms) setting. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
The caching control is documented, but there is no established evidence that changing it fixes a local file’s loop-boundary gap. Likewise, switching to VLC is a comparison test, not a proven cure. An individual forum report describes loop timing being off by less than a second, including with VLC; that is one user’s report, not a general measurement or a claim about every OBS setup. Find out whether the gap is in the file or OBS path
- Play the original ASMR file outside OBS and listen closely across the end and beginning. Check whether the transition itself contains silence, a click, or an edit that does not join cleanly.
- Record the same loop in OBS, then listen to the recording at the corresponding boundary. This checks the captured output rather than relying only on the preview or monitoring path.
- Compare the two. If the same discontinuity is present outside OBS and in the recording, investigate the file’s edit or encoded audio boundary. If it appears only in the OBS capture, review the source configuration and capture path. This comparison narrows possibilities; it does not prove a specific cause by itself.
- Note whether it occurs at every repeat or only after a scene change, along with your OBS version, operating system, source type, and file format. The official OBS Media Sources page covers Windows, macOS, and Linux, but the available documentation does not establish platform-specific loop-gap behavior.
Troubleshoot by symptom
- A pause appears when returning to a scene: Check whether Close file when inactive is enabled. OBS says reloading after inactivity can briefly leave nothing showing; disable the option for a baseline test.
- The file starts over after a scene change: Check Restart playback when source becomes active on Media Source, or Visibility Behaviour on VLC Video Source. These address activation or visibility, not a guaranteed seamless end-to-start transition.
- The same click or silence occurs in an outside player: Inspect the audio edit and encoded boundary in the source file before blaming OBS.
- The gap occurs only in the OBS recording: Keep the test simple, with one visible source and no scene changes, then compare Media Source with VLC Video Source only if VLC’s playlist or media support is relevant. Record the version and conditions when asking for help.
- Changing network caching does not help: That setting is exposed by VLC Video Source, but its presence alone does not show that it affects local-file loop timing.
