1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can stream a video file from a Mac to YouTube Live with FFmpeg by creating a live event in YouTube Studio, choosing compatible video and audio settings, and sending the file to YouTube’s ingest endpoint at real-time speed. For a dependable starting point, use H.264 video, AAC stereo audio, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where the endpoint and your FFmpeg build support it. You still need to test the preview and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages; settings must fit your source file and upload connection.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube account able to create a live stream. Account eligibility can vary; check YouTube Studio if you cannot create an event.
- The video file on your Mac, plus an FFmpeg build that includes the encoders and protocol you plan to use.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected bitrate.
- A private place to keep your YouTube stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone with the key may be able to send video to your event.
This guide does not assume a particular Mac model, macOS version, package manager, or FFmpeg build. The reviewed sources do not establish a current installation command for macOS; confirm your own build supports the required encoder and RTMPS protocol before relying on it.
Create a YouTube Live event and get its endpoint
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Prepare the event and choose the stream setup offered in Studio. Copy the server endpoint and stream key shown for that event.
- Keep the key private. Do not publish it in a tutorial, paste it into a public chat, or include it in screenshots or shared logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Studio.
- Use the endpoint and protocol shown by Studio rather than assuming a URL from an example. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data in transit to Google’s servers. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance explains supported protocols and ingest settings.
Choose output settings that match the video and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and up to 60 frames per second. It recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. Follow the settings table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. YouTube’s recommended encoder settings
| Setting | Practical starting point | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 for the encode example below | YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1; encoder availability depends on your FFmpeg build. |
| Bitrate | For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. | These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee. Your stable upload capacity should comfortably support the chosen output bitrate. |
| Keyframes | About every 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Stereo audio | AAC, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps | YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as recommended advanced stereo settings. |
| 5.1 audio | 48 kHz, 384 kbps | YouTube lists these as recommended advanced settings for 5.1; the command below is for stereo. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit | Use settings appropriate to the source and intended output; do not assume a source is SDR. |
For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, consult YouTube’s bitrate table and select a quality your connection can sustain. YouTube also advises checking upload bitrate. Encoder settings and YouTube’s stream-health guidance

Inspect the file and choose streamcopy or transcoding
Before sending a file, identify its video and audio codecs, frame rate, resolution, and track layout. A file can contain multiple audio tracks or codecs the destination or output muxer will not accept. Choose the intended tracks explicitly if needed. The right approach depends on what is inside the file and what your FFmpeg build supports.
Streamcopy when the source already fits
Streamcopy uses -c copy to pass encoded streams through without decoding and re-encoding. It is fast and avoids generational quality loss, but only works when the source codecs, timestamps, frame rate, and selected output muxer are acceptable for the destination. It cannot resize, filter, or otherwise transform streams. If a stream is incompatible, copy only the compatible stream and encode the other, or transcode both.

Transcode when you need compatibility or control
Transcoding decodes and re-encodes media. It is the more flexible choice when you need to change codecs, resize, apply filters, or make the output conform to a known profile. It uses more CPU and another lossy encode can reduce quality, so choose settings suitable for the source and test that your Mac can keep up. FFmpeg documents the distinction between streamcopy and transcoding, as well as how input and output options are applied. FFmpeg documentation
Send the file to YouTube with FFmpeg
The following is an encode-oriented template, not a tested command for every Mac or input file. Replace input.mp4, the endpoint, and the conspicuous key placeholder with your own values. Use the precise server address and protocol shown in Live Control Room. Confirm your FFmpeg build has libx264, AAC encoding, RTMPS, and the output muxer required by the endpoint. The example uses an FLV muxer, common for RTMP-family ingest where supported by the chosen endpoint.

In this illustrative 1080p30 profile, -b:v 8M is an example target within YouTube’s 5–14 Mbps minimum-to-recommended range for H.264 1080p30; it is not a universal recommendation. Choose a bitrate for your selected resolution and reliable upload capacity. The example’s 30 fps and -g 60 set a 60-frame GOP, approximately two seconds at 30 fps. If you change frame rate, adjust the GOP to keep roughly a two-second keyframe interval.
-re before the input asks FFmpeg to read the file at approximately its real-time rate instead of sending the whole file as fast as possible. FFmpeg options are order-sensitive: input options belong before the corresponding -i, while output encoding and muxer options belong before the output URL. FFmpeg command-line documentation

Streamcopy template, only for compatible files
If inspection confirms both streams are compatible with the destination and muxer, a basic copy attempt looks like this:
ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4" -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This does not convert codecs, repair unsuitable timestamps, or make an incompatible container acceptable. If it errors or YouTube rejects the feed, use the encode approach or transcode only the incompatible stream. Do not treat a successful FFmpeg connection alone as proof that YouTube can decode the video.

Verify the preview, then monitor the live stream
- Start FFmpeg and watch its terminal output for connection or encoding errors. Keep the key out of anything you share.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview or ingestion status. Check that the picture moves and that audio is present; a static frame or silent source can make a feed appear connected while still being wrong.
- Test with audio and motion similar to the actual intended stream before the event. YouTube’s instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube encoder settings
- During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages, and adjust bitrate or output settings if they indicate a problem.
- When finished, stop FFmpeg cleanly and confirm how the event ended in Studio. Do not assume every event configuration handles the end of an incoming feed the same way.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or cannot find libx264 |
The installed build lacks the selected encoder. | Use a build with the needed encoder or choose an encoder actually available in your build. |
| Connection fails or the endpoint rejects the feed | Wrong endpoint/key, unsupported RTMPS protocol, or missing protocol support in FFmpeg. | Copy the endpoint and key again from the correct event, check RTMPS support, and keep the key out of public output. |
| FFmpeg connects, but YouTube preview is blank or errors | Unsupported codec or muxer combination, timestamp issue, or inappropriate stream selection. | Check the file’s streams and FFmpeg errors; explicitly select tracks or transcode incompatible media. |
| Video looks soft, stutters, or stream health warns about bitrate | Output settings exceed the stable upload connection, or the bitrate does not suit the selected resolution and frame rate. | Check YouTube’s codec-specific table and upload bitrate; lower the target settings if the connection cannot sustain them. |
| Audio is missing, wrong, or on the wrong language track | The file has multiple tracks, an unsupported audio codec, or an unintended default stream. | Inspect track layout, select the intended audio stream, and encode it to a YouTube-listed format such as AAC if needed. |
| Video ends sooner than expected or ends the event | The input file reached its end, or the live event is configured to stop when the feed ends. | Check event behavior in Studio; for continuous playback, use a playlist/looping workflow rather than assuming a single-file command repeats it. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Having a video file does not by itself establish that you have the rights to stream its picture, music, or other included material. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before broadcasting. A technically healthy feed can still be blocked or receive a claim for rights reasons.
Pre-recorded video sent through a live event remains subject to YouTube’s policies, including monetization rules where relevant. Reusing content is not automatically a policy violation, but a channel’s eligibility and monetization decision depend on YouTube’s current rules and the content’s originality and added value. Review the applicable guidance in YouTube Studio for your channel and location before relying on monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel without leaving a Mac at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a local FFmpeg session. The workflow is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera and it streams to YouTube only.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to remain on.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
