For one prerecorded video that should play once at a scheduled time, use YouTube Premiere: it is free and needs no separate streaming software. If you specifically need an encoder-fed YouTube Live broadcast, OBS Studio is the clearest free option, but the computer running OBS must stay on and connected. For a stream that should run unattended or continuously in the cloud, StreamNeo is the #1 fit: it loops uploaded videos on YouTube, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives you the first day free.

Choose the kind of broadcast you actually need

A finished video can reach viewers in two different ways. A YouTube Premiere plays a video already uploaded to YouTube at a scheduled time, with chat beside it. An encoder-fed live stream sends a feed to YouTube Live from software such as OBS or a cloud service. Scheduling a YouTube event does not, by itself, start OBS or transmit a feed.

What you want Best fit What stays active
Play one uploaded video at a chosen time, once YouTube Premiere No separate encoder is needed
Send a prerecorded video as an encoder-fed live broadcast, with hands-on control OBS Studio Your computer and internet connection during the broadcast
Schedule a prerecorded stream through a browser-based service StreamYard, after checking current plan limits Service and plan requirements should be confirmed before relying on it
Run repeated, unattended, or continuous prerecorded playback StreamNeo for cloud YouTube playout Cloud service, not your home computer

YouTube’s official encoder guide lists OBS as open-source software for recording and live streaming at no charge. Its software directory also lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded streaming and Upstream for 24/7 live video streaming; those listings describe use cases, not pricing or independent performance. See YouTube’s encoder guide and software directory.

Free, simplest route: schedule a YouTube Premiere

Choose Premiere when you want a single uploaded video to begin at a scheduled time and do not need a live encoder feed. The video is uploaded before playback, and viewers can watch the scheduled event with chat. This is not a way to loop a video indefinitely or to send a live feed from OBS.

  1. Upload the finished video to your YouTube channel.
  2. In the upload or video scheduling flow, choose to schedule it as a Premiere, then set its date and time.
  3. Review the watch page and event details before sharing the link with viewers.

YouTube’s exact interface can change, so use the current Premiere controls shown in YouTube Studio. The distinction that matters is that YouTube plays the uploaded video; your computer does not need to run an encoder for the Premiere.

Free encoder workflow: use OBS Studio

Use OBS if you need the video to be transmitted to YouTube as a live encoder feed rather than played as a Premiere. OBS itself is free and open source according to YouTube’s software directory. This is an operator-run local workflow, not a managed cloud scheduler: keep the computer running, OBS open, and the internet connection available for the whole broadcast.

  1. Check YouTube Live eligibility first. YouTube eligibility rules can change. A vendor guide published June 28, 2026 reports that a channel needs verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and that first activation can take up to 24 hours. Confirm the current requirements in YouTube before your planned start time. LiveReacting’s guide provides that dated summary; treat YouTube’s current requirements as authoritative.
  2. Create the live event in YouTube Studio. Choose the encoder-based streaming option, configure the event’s title, visibility, and schedule, and open its stream settings. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it could send a feed to your channel.
  3. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key supplied by YouTube. Do not share the key in screenshots, messages, or public pages.
  4. Prepare the prerecorded source. Add the video as a media source in OBS and enable looping only if you want it to repeat. Check that the media source, audio, and scene are correct before going live. OBS is transmitting an encoder feed; it is not uploading the finished video as a scheduled Premiere.
  5. Match the output settings to the source and YouTube’s current guidance. Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval in OBS’s output/video settings. There is no single bitrate or keyframe value that is right for every resolution and frame rate; use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations linked from its official guide rather than copying a preset that may no longer apply.
  6. Start and monitor the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS, then verify that YouTube receives the feed and the event is live as intended. Keep OBS, the computer, and the network connection active until the stream is finished; stopping the local encoder ends the feed.

Before going live

  • Watch the video and check its audio, aspect ratio, and start/end points.
  • Confirm the event’s visibility and schedule, and test the stream key without publishing it.
  • Check that the channel is eligible to stream and that the computer can remain on for the planned duration.
  • Review YouTube’s copyright policies and rules for live content. The fact that a video is prerecorded does not grant permission to use music, footage, or other material in it.

Browser scheduling: StreamYard

StreamYard documents a scheduling flow that includes YouTube as a destination and lets you select either “Studio” or “Pre-recorded video” as the source, followed by “Schedule for Later.” The help page confirms the workflow, but does not establish whether this feature is currently included in the free plan or state its file and duration limits. Check the current entitlement and limits before selecting it as a free solution. StreamYard’s scheduling instructions.

For unattended or continuous YouTube playback

If the key requirement is that playback continues after you turn off your computer, a local OBS setup is the wrong fit unless you separately arrange a continuously running machine. YouTube’s software directory lists cloud tools for 24/7 prerecorded or live streaming, but that directory does not establish their prices or free-plan eligibility. For StreamNeo, the relevant setup is cloud playout of uploaded videos to YouTube: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload your video or playlist to StreamNeo, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your upload streams as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.

Costs and what “free” means here

  • YouTube Premiere: presented as a free route for a scheduled playback of an uploaded video; it is not encoder-fed streaming.
  • OBS Studio: YouTube lists it as free, open-source recording and live-streaming software. That does not remove the need for a computer and connection to stay active while it transmits.
  • StreamYard: its support flow documents prerecorded scheduling, but the reviewed support page does not establish free-plan access or current limits.
  • Cloud services: YouTube’s directory establishes that Gyre and Upstream serve relevant cloud-streaming use cases, not that they are free. Confirm a service’s current plan and terms before committing.
  • StreamNeo: same features on every plan; only the billing length changes. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and StreamNeo team support. You can choose a day, week, month, six months, or year and cancel any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Contact support for five or more slots. Troubleshooting common problems

The scheduled event is not playing

If you scheduled a Premiere, confirm that you selected Premiere rather than assuming a regular scheduled upload is an encoder event. A Premiere plays the uploaded file at the chosen time; it does not start OBS.

YouTube is not receiving the OBS feed

Check that OBS is connected to the correct YouTube event and that the current stream key was entered correctly. Keep the key private. Confirm the channel is allowed to live stream, then check OBS’s connection and YouTube’s live control room before the scheduled start.

The stream stops when you leave

That is expected in a local OBS workflow if the computer sleeps, OBS closes, or the connection drops. Prevent sleep for the broadcast and keep the machine and network active. For operation that must continue while your computer is off, use a cloud playout service instead.

Check the service’s current file, duration, destination, and plan restrictions. StreamYard’s scheduling help page documents the steps but does not specify current free-plan eligibility or caps.

The video contains material that triggers a copyright concern

Review the rights and permissions for every part of the video, including music and footage. Prerecording a video does not make copyrighted material permissible. If YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility or copyright requirements are unclear, check YouTube’s own help pages before scheduling.
