You can use a Synology NAS with Surveillance Station to send a supported camera feed to YouTube Live. That documented feature is for a camera broadcast—not for looping uploaded videos as a 24/7 playlist. For prerecorded video, use a separate encoder or cloud streaming service. Before setting up either route, check which kind of continuous stream you need and whether your NAS and Surveillance Station package support the camera workflow.

Choose the right kind of continuous stream

What you want to stream Suitable route What the Synology documentation establishes
A live camera feed Surveillance Station Live Broadcast Synology documents sending a camera feed to YouTube Live. Its help page says YouTube Live only supports H.264 video for this feature. Synology Live Broadcast help
A loop or playlist of prerecorded videos A dedicated encoder or cloud streaming service This is a different task from broadcasting a Surveillance Station camera. YouTube’s encoder directory lists cloud services that describe continuous streaming of prerecorded videos; the listing is not a guarantee of a service’s uptime, price, or availability. YouTube encoder instructions

Do not assume every Synology NAS can encode and loop prerecorded video unattended. Model, processor, installed software, workload, and package availability all matter, and the cited Synology pages do not provide a complete current model-compatibility matrix.

Check compatibility and prepare the stream

  • Confirm your exact NAS model supports the required Surveillance Station package and Live Broadcast feature. Synology’s cited help page is version 8; its specifications page is for DSM 7.4, so verify availability in your installed package and model documentation rather than assuming every DSM/model combination has the same menus. Synology Surveillance Station specifications
  • Make sure the camera is supported by your Surveillance Station installation and can provide an H.264 stream profile. Synology identifies H.264 as the supported video format for YouTube Live Broadcast.
  • Have access to the YouTube channel’s Live Control Room and the stream’s server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or expose it in public configuration.
  • Check YouTube’s current channel eligibility and live-stream guidance in YouTube Studio. Exact account prerequisites, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, latency mode, and bandwidth recommendations are not specified in the cited Synology passages; use the recommendations shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

Set up a Synology camera broadcast to YouTube

  1. Enable Live Broadcast. In DSM, open Application Center, enable Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast application, and open it. Menu names and feature availability can vary with the installed package and NAS model.
  2. Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live → Stream. Create or select the stream, then copy its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter these in the encoder’s server/stream URL and stream-key fields. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  3. Enter the connection details in Surveillance Station. Open YouTube Settings in Live Broadcast and enter the RTMP path and corresponding stream key. Synology says these values are available from your personal YouTube page or Live Control Room. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube before continuing.
  4. Select the camera and profile. Under Live Stream Source, choose the camera and its stream profile. Confirm that the selected profile uses H.264 and is supported by your camera, NAS, and installed package.
  5. Start broadcasting and verify it. Turn on Live Broadcast, then check the stream preview and status in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that video is arriving and that YouTube reports a healthy stream before relying on it.

Settings and operating limits to verify

Video format and stream quality

Synology’s Live Broadcast documentation specifies H.264. It does not establish one universal resolution, frame rate, or bitrate for all cameras and NAS models. Choose a camera profile that the camera and NAS can sustain, then follow the current YouTube Live Control Room guidance and watch the stream-health indicators. Avoid copying a bitrate value from an unrelated camera or channel configuration.

Internet, power, and interruptions

This camera workflow depends on the NAS, camera, network equipment, and internet connection remaining available. Evaluate local power and upload-connection reliability for your own setup; the cited sources do not provide uptime measurements or promise automatic recovery after an interruption. Check the YouTube Control Room after a dropped connection and confirm whether the broadcast resumed as intended.

Archiving and long broadcasts

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish the same archiving outcome for streams longer than 12 hours, so do not rely on a longer broadcast being saved. If you need a recording, make a separate recording plan and verify the result in YouTube Studio.

If you want a 24/7 loop of prerecorded videos

Surveillance Station Live Broadcast is the documented camera-to-YouTube path, not a playlist broadcaster for uploaded video files. YouTube’s encoder directory lists services that describe cloud-based continuous streaming of prerecorded videos, but that directory alone does not verify a particular service’s uptime, price, current availability, or terms. A NAS-based DIY encoder is another possible architecture, but verify that your exact hardware and software can encode and loop your material continuously before depending on it.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded YouTube loop, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay powered on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Visit StreamNeo or start the free first day.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom What to check
Live Broadcast is missing Check that Surveillance Station is installed, Live Broadcast is enabled in Application Center, and your exact NAS model and package version support the feature. The cited specifications do not establish a universal model matrix.
YouTube does not receive video Recheck the stream’s server URL and key in YouTube Studio and Surveillance Station. Make sure the selected stream is the intended one and has not been replaced or reset.
The stream fails to start or has no usable video Confirm that the selected camera is available and its selected profile is H.264. Synology lists H.264 as the supported format for this YouTube Live Broadcast feature.
The stream starts but reports health problems Use YouTube Live Control Room’s current stream-health guidance, then review the camera profile and the NAS’s network path. The cited sources do not specify a bitrate or bandwidth margin that fits every setup.
The broadcast stops after a network or power interruption Restore the camera, NAS, network, or internet connection as applicable, then inspect Surveillance Station and YouTube Live Control Room to confirm whether you need to restart the broadcast. The cited documentation does not promise automatic recovery.
The stream key may have been exposed Replace or rotate the key in YouTube Studio, then update the corresponding value in Surveillance Station. Do not publish the new key.

Protect the channel and its content

  • Only stream material you have permission to broadcast. Copyright claims or other YouTube policy issues can interrupt a stream or affect the channel.
  • Do not assume that looping prerecorded content is eligible for monetization or compliant simply because it streams successfully. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your content and channel.
  • Keep the stream key secret and use the key associated with the intended stream.

For camera-to-YouTube streaming, Synology documents a specific Surveillance Station workflow with an H.264 source profile; prerecorded 24/7 looping is a separate encoder or cloud-service job. Verify exact NAS compatibility and stream settings in your installed package and YouTube Live Control Room before relying on a continuous broadcast.
