Use OBS’s built-in Image Slide Show source to rotate still backgrounds automatically during a meditation stream. Add your images, set Slide Mode to Automatic, choose the transition and timing, and leave Loop enabled. For moving backgrounds, loop one clip with Media Source or use VLC Video Source for a playlist. Keep the background below text and branding in the Sources list, then test the complete scene before going live.
Choose the right OBS source

For a predictable sequence of still landscapes, artwork, or other static scenes, Image Slide Show is usually the simplest choice. Use Randomize Playback only when you want the order to vary. The settings control playback behavior; they do not establish that any particular visual or rotation schedule improves meditation or sleep.
Set up an automatic still-image rotation
- Add the source: Open the scene used for the meditation stream. In the Sources panel, click the plus button and choose Image Slide Show. Give the source a clear name, then add individual image files or a directory. OBS documents BMP, TGA, PNG, JPEG/JPG, and GIF support for this source. OBS Image Sources
- Choose automatic playback: Set Slide Mode to Automatic so the slideshow advances without you switching scenes manually.
- Set the pace and transition separately: Choose a transition, such as Fade, and set Time Between Slides and Transition Speed. Time Between Slides is how long an image displays before the next transition begins; Transition Speed controls how long that animation takes. OBS’s documented defaults are 8,000 ms between slides and a 700 ms transition. Treat those as starting defaults, not recommended meditation timings; preview the cadence and adjust it to your content. - Decide how the sequence behaves: Leave Loop enabled if the slideshow should return to its first image after the last. Leave Randomize Playback off for a fixed, intentional order; turn it on only if a changing order is suitable. Check Visibility Behaviour if the source might be hidden: that setting determines whether it continues, pauses, or stops while not visible. OBS Image Sources
- Position it behind overlays: In Sources, place the slideshow below titles, logos, or other elements that should remain visible. Higher sources render above lower sources. Select the slideshow and use the preview to position it, or right-click and choose Transform > Fit to Screen or Edit Transform. Check for unwanted cropping, black bars, or text that becomes hard to read over the image. OBS Sources Guide
Use a looping video background instead
Repeat one clip with Media Source
Add a Media Source from the Sources panel, select the video file, and enable its Loop property. Keep it below any overlays, size it to the canvas, and watch it through a full repeat in preview or a recording. This is the direct option when you want one moving background to repeat rather than rotate among still images. OBS Media Sources
Rotate video clips with VLC Video Source
Install VLC in an architecture compatible with your OBS installation, then add a VLC Video Source and build its playlist from the clips you want to use. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the playlist; OBS documents that setting as on by default. Use its shuffle option only if you want the clip order randomized. Confirm the playlist advances and loops as expected before relying on it live. OBS Media Sources

Test the scene and the live path
A looping source only controls what OBS plays; it does not by itself keep a stream connected or guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting. OBS recommends making a short test before the first stream. Record or test-stream long enough to observe several image changes or a full clip/playlist cycle, and check that overlays stay visible, transitions look right, and the output has no unexpected bars or cropping. The OBS setup guidance notes that configuration depends on hardware and network conditions, and that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps. OBS Quick Start Guide · OBS Studio Overview Guide
Common problems and fixes
- The slideshow does not advance: Confirm Slide Mode is Automatic and that multiple files or a directory containing images were added. Check the source’s visibility behavior if it is hidden.
- The same order matters, but images appear shuffled: Turn off Randomize Playback.
- The final image stays on screen: Enable Loop if you want the sequence to return to its first image after the last.
- Text or a logo disappears behind the background: Move the slideshow lower in the Sources list. Higher sources render above lower ones.
- The image is cropped or has bars: Use Fit to Screen or Edit Transform, then inspect the preview against the stream canvas. Aspect-ratio differences can require a choice between cropping and leaving unused space.
- A video playlist source is unavailable: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; the documented requirement for 64-bit OBS is 64-bit VLC.
- The stream drops even though the background loops: Source looping is not stream recovery. Test the full OBS, computer, and network setup; playback settings alone cannot ensure a continuous connection.
Use visuals you have the right to stream
OBS’s source documentation explains playback controls, not permissions for image or video files. Confirm that you have the necessary license and streaming rights for each background, including any music or other audio included in a video clip.
