Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Save the scenes in a Scene Collection, keep stream and output settings in a Profile, and test the complete output before broadcasting.
How OBS scenes and sources fit together
A scene is a layout in the broadcast output; its sources provide the video, text, images, audio, and other elements. Add scenes in the Scenes dock and add sources in the Sources dock. Source order controls layering: sources higher in the list appear above those below them, so a title or logo can sit over a video. See the OBS Studio overview.
Plan scenes around the program
Make a separate scene for each distinct visual segment rather than building one crowded scene for the whole program. A simple sequence might be:
- Opening: a slate or title card.
- Main program: the prerecorded video, with any persistent title or logo layered above it.
- Intermission: a holding screen or another visual segment.
- Ending: an end card or final slate.
You can switch scenes manually, or configure a hotkey for a specific scene. OBS documentation describes Studio Mode and scene switching, but does not establish a built-in timed automation sequence for advancing a program.

Add prerecorded video to a scene
For one local video file: Media Source
- Select the scene where the video should appear.
- In the Sources dock, add a Media Source and choose the local file.
- Set playback behavior to suit the segment: enable looping if it should repeat, restart the file when the source becomes active if it should begin from the start on scene activation, hide it after playback ends if another underlying visual should show, or close the file while inactive if appropriate.
OBS documents support for video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Check the OBS Media Sources guide for the available source options.
For a playlist: VLC Video source
Use a VLC Video source when a scene needs a playlist of multiple files, with loop or shuffle controls. VLC must be installed for this source to appear. Match its architecture to OBS: the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.

Save the right settings with a Scene Collection and Profile
OBS keeps scene layouts and broadcast configuration in separate places. A Scene Collection stores scenes and sources and can be switched for different setups; it also contains global audio sources. A Profile stores stream, video, and output settings, but not scenes. For a dedicated prerecorded channel, use a matching Scene Collection and Profile, and save or select both as needed. Details are in the OBS Profiles and Scene Collections guide.
| OBS item | What it saves | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Scene Collection | Scenes and sources, including global audio sources | The layouts and media arrangement for this program |
| Profile | Stream, video, and output settings | The channel’s broadcast configuration |
Set up scene changes and verify the output
- Assign a scene hotkey if you will operate manually. In OBS hotkey settings, choose a key for switching to the relevant scene. Avoid keys that conflict with other controls you use during the broadcast.
- Check the audio meters. Play the media and confirm OBS receives the intended audio before going live.
- Review the output and stream configuration. Confirm the correct Profile and intended output settings are selected. YouTube’s current channel requirements, event setup, and ingest instructions are not covered by the OBS documentation cited here; consult current YouTube Help for those platform-specific details.
- Run a short test recording or stream. Verify picture, audio, overlays, and scene transitions end to end. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes before a first stream; see its streaming guide.
Keep OBS responsive if the scene collection grows
If OBS struggles, simplify scenes and collections. Several complex or hidden sources, filters, and browser sources can consume resources. OBS recommends using appropriately sized media and reducing expensive filters or browser sources when performance is poor. If a large general-purpose collection becomes sluggish, keep this program in a separate Scene Collection. See the OBS high CPU usage guide.
