To stream a prerecorded forest ambience video continuously on YouTube Live, use FFmpeg with -re to send the file in real time and -stream_loop -1 to repeat it indefinitely. First create a YouTube live stream and copy its server URL and stream key; then run FFmpeg with output settings matched to your video and upload connection. Preview the feed before going live, and confirm you have permission to broadcast both the footage and audio.
1. Set up YouTube Live
- Confirm your channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. These are YouTube’s stated prerequisites for live streaming; see YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream or select a scheduled event, then copy the stream URL and stream key. Use the exact destination YouTube provides; its format can vary.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or expose it in a public command example. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and use the replacement key.
- Choose the event’s privacy setting deliberately. For a test, use a private or unlisted event as appropriate. With a scheduled event, start FFmpeg and wait for the incoming preview, check picture and sound, then select Go live. For an immediate stream, follow the Live Control Room flow and confirm that the stream is live.
2. Prepare and run the looping FFmpeg command
Use one combined video-and-audio file
This starting command assumes forest-ambience.mp4 contains both the forest footage and the ambience audio, and that you want a 1080p30 H.264 stream. Replace the destination with the exact server URL and key from Live Control Room. Do not paste a real key into a public page or shared shell history.

-f flv "$STREAM_URL"In FFmpeg, -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; because it is an input option, it belongs before -i. The -re option reads the file at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), pacing file input for a live output. Keep input options before their input and output options after it. See the FFmpeg documentation for these options and other command-line details.
What the example’s settings mean
-c:v libx264encodes video as H.264, and-pix_fmt yuv420pselects a commonly supported pixel format for this example.-b:v 10Msets the target video bitrate to 10 Mbps;-maxrate 10Mand-bufsize 20Mset rate-control limits and buffer size for the example.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP. At 30 fps, that is a two-second keyframe interval.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.-f flvselects the output container used for this RTMP/RTMPS-style ingest command.
YouTube’s undated encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, gives 5 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p30, and lists 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz stereo as its audio guidance. Those figures are specific to that resolution and frame rate; 10 Mbps is not a universal requirement. For other resolutions or frame rates, choose the corresponding YouTube-supported bitrate and adjust the GOP to preserve a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Settings and support may change, so check the current YouTube encoder settings when configuring a stream.

Match the stream to your connection and source
YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. This is YouTube Help’s recommendation, not a reliability guarantee. Check the stable upload capacity available to the computer while streaming, not just the plan’s advertised download speed. If capacity is tight, lower resolution or frame rate and choose the bitrate for that setting rather than copying the 1080p30 example. Test with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast, then watch Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages. YouTube’s streaming tips also advise monitoring audio and video quality during the broadcast.
If audio is in a separate file
The command above does not add a separate audio track. If your forest video is silent and the ambience is in another file, loop and pace that input too, then deliberately synchronize and mix the two inputs. Validate the result in preview before going live: simply looping two unrelated files does not guarantee that their timing or durations will remain aligned. For a basic setup, one combined, rights-cleared audiovisual file is easier to manage.

3. Test, go live, and monitor
- Confirm the local file plays, has the expected picture and sound, and loops cleanly. Look for black frames, abrupt cuts, or audio gaps at the loop point.
- Start FFmpeg early enough to inspect the incoming feed. Watch the Live Control Room preview and listen for the intended ambience before starting a scheduled event.
- Check stream-health messages and monitor both picture and sound during the broadcast. If quality is unstable, reduce the video bitrate or resolution and retest against available upload bandwidth.
- When ending the event, stop the encoder as YouTube advises and check the resulting stream and archive in Studio.
4. Check rights and plan for archives
Use footage and sound you created, assets licensed for the intended use, or other material whose permissions cover livestream transmission and any retained archive. Check requirements such as attribution, modification, commercial-use limits, and duration, and keep the license documentation. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says the audio and video must not infringe others’ content; permission for one element does not necessarily cover the other.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat that as an operational boundary if you need a recording: end the event and verify the archive in Studio, and keep a separate local master when appropriate. Automatic archival does not ensure FFmpeg ran without interruption or that the archive is error-free. For a continuous stream longer than that boundary, do not assume YouTube will provide one complete archive.

5. Troubleshooting
