There is no universal winner: keeping a gaming PC on costs the electricity it actually draws while streaming, while a VPS costs its recurring compute fee plus enough outbound data and capacity to sustain the stream. Measure the PC at the wall under the real encoding workload, then compare both options at the same bitrate, quality and monthly runtime.
What belongs in a fair comparison?
Compare the full cost of delivering the same stream for the same period. A VPS price alone is not comparable with a PC’s electricity bill: the VPS may also need a more capable instance, extra transfer, storage or operational services. Conversely, the home calculation should use the marginal electricity rate for your location, not a generic national average.
- Home: average wall draw during the actual stream workload, powered hours and marginal electricity price per kWh.
- VPS: recurring plan cost, sufficient encoding capacity, included outbound transfer, additional egress, storage and any services you need.
- Both: the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and stream duration.
The word “idle” can be misleading here. A computer that is encoding and transmitting a stream is doing work; an idle measurement is only a baseline, not a substitute for measuring the streaming workload.
How to calculate the cost of leaving your PC on
Measure the whole setup at the wall
- Connect a plug-in electricity usage monitor between the outlet and the equipment that will remain on.
- Run the intended stream workload and record average watts over a representative period. Include the display and peripherals if they will stay powered; measure them consistently in any baseline comparison.
- Keep the idle reading separate from the stream reading. Do not use a power-supply rating or a GPU specification as a measure of the complete system’s wall draw.
The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2020 technical report presents a mixed-use profile of an average gaming computer plus display totaling 1,394 kWh per year. That profile includes gaming, browsing, video streaming, idle, sleep and off periods, with 4.4 hours of gaming per day; it is not a 24/7 encoder test or a universal idle figure. A 2019 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory publication reports measurements across 26 gaming systems and finds energy use varies with hardware and workload. Neither establishes a standard wattage for your PC while streaming.

Convert measured watts into electricity cost
Use this formula, with your local marginal tariff:
Average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours powered × electricity price per kWh
For a 30-day month, use 720 hours. For an average 365-day year, use 8,760 hours. The result is the variable energy cost; fixed utility charges generally do not disappear because one computer is switched off. Electricity rates depend on place and date, so check your bill. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Electric Power Monthly is an official U.S. statistics source, not a replacement for an individual tariff.

How much VPS transfer does a continuous stream need?
Estimate the stream’s outgoing data from its bitrate before choosing a VPS. The calculation below gives decimal gigabytes before protocol overhead:
Mbps × 1,000,000 ÷ 8 × seconds ÷ 1,000,000,000 = GB

| Continuous bitrate | Estimated outgoing data for 30 days | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | About 1,620 GB (1.62 TB) | Arithmetic using 30 × 24 × 60 × 60 seconds and decimal bytes; before protocol overhead. |
| 10 Mbps | About 3,240 GB (3.24 TB) | Arithmetic using 30 × 24 × 60 × 60 seconds and decimal bytes; before protocol overhead. |
These are calculations, not measured traffic totals. Check how the provider counts outbound traffic, whether protocol overhead is included and what overages cost. For context, YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps H.264 for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps H.264 for 1080p60. Even the 5 Mbps example exceeds 1 TB over 30 days before overhead, so a plan with a 1 TB allowance would need more transfer or additional spend for that example.
Check that a VPS can encode the stream, not just send it
Transfer allowance does not prove a VPS has enough compute capacity to encode reliably. Match the VPS to the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate, and check CPU or GPU availability and sustained performance. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, constant bitrate encoding and recommended bitrates by output settings. For H.264, its examples include 10 Mbps at 1080p30, 17 Mbps at 1080p60 and 50 Mbps at 4K60.

YouTube automatically transcodes incoming live streams into viewer formats, but the creator still has to deliver the incoming feed reliably. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing the stream before going live. Choose settings your connection and VPS can sustain rather than assuming a higher resolution will work simply because the plan can transmit data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare the options using your own numbers
- Write down the target stream settings and monthly hours. Use the same target for the PC and VPS estimates.
- Measure average whole-system wall watts during that encoding workload. Multiply by monthly powered hours and your marginal electricity rate.
- Calculate monthly data from the intended bitrate, then compare it with the VPS plan’s included transfer and overage terms.
- Add the VPS compute tier needed for the selected encoder and any required GPU, storage or operational services.
- Consider operational effort separately: a home setup depends on your hardware, power and internet connection; a VPS shifts operation to a provider and your server configuration. The available evidence does not establish a general reliability winner.
The JRC’s 2020 report and LBNL’s 2019 gaming-systems study provide context, not a price estimate for an individual 24/7 stream. The EIA’s July 2026 issue, released September 24, 2026, likewise cannot supply your personal electricity tariff. Your measured watts, bill and the VPS provider’s current transfer terms determine the comparison.

When a managed cloud service may fit better
If the channel runs prerecorded videos or a playlist rather than a custom, interactive live production, a managed service can be a different option from operating a VPS encoder yourself. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded content, so your computer does not need to stay on. See StreamNeo for the service details.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for prerecorded video on YouTube, not a camera-based live production. It keeps the stream running without a home computer, sends uploaded video as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
Quick Recap
- Upload your recording or create a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud.
