A PC drawing 100 W continuously uses 72 kWh in a 30-day month. Using Tata Power Distribution Mumbai’s FY 2026–27 residential energy and wheeling charges, those units work out to about ₹310–₹910 in base variable charges, depending on the tariff slab. That is an illustration, not a universal Mumbai bill: your distributor, household usage, slab allocation and bill adjustments determine the actual cost.
Calculate the PC’s monthly electricity use
Use the PC’s average draw at the wall, not the maximum wattage printed on its power supply. Convert watts and running time to energy with this formula:
Watts × hours ÷ 1,000 = kilowatt-hours (kWh)
For a 30-day month, a PC running around the clock operates for 720 hours. A 100 W average draw therefore uses 100 × 720 ÷ 1,000 = 72 kWh. This is a scenario, not a measured or typical draw for every streaming PC. Idle, streaming, encoding and gaming workloads can draw different amounts.

These are arithmetic examples, not claims about typical hardware. A monitor or other equipment adds to the total if it is included in the measurement.

Estimate the cost using the Tata Power Mumbai example
The following calculation uses Tata Power Company Limited Distribution Business’s residential LT I (B) schedule for 1 April 2026 through 31 March 2027. The listed energy and wheeling charges are added to give a base variable-charge estimate; the calculation applies one slab rate to all 72 kWh to show how the result changes by slab.

These figures are illustrative base variable charges, not promised bill totals. If your household already consumes electricity, the PC’s added units are priced at the marginal slabs they occupy. For example, if added usage crosses a slab boundary, calculate each portion at its applicable rate rather than multiplying all PC units by the lowest rate. The account’s category and total usage matter.

Why your actual bill may differ
Confirm your electricity distributor and category
“Mumbai residential rate” is not one tariff. These worked figures apply to the cited Tata Power Distribution Mumbai schedule, not every utility serving Mumbai. MSEDCL lists a separate FY 2026–27 order dated 25 March 2026; its tariff index alone does not establish the exact residential bill calculation for an individual account. Allow for adjustments and connection charges
The Tata Power order says fuel adjustment charges (FAC) apply over and above the base tariff. The order also lists monthly fixed charges of ₹90 for a single-phase residential connection and ₹160 for a three-phase connection. These are connection-level charges and generally should not be attributed entirely to the PC as though it caused them.

Check time-of-day conditions
For FY 2026–27, the same order lists a residential rebate of ₹0.55/kWh from 09:00 to 17:00, subject to smart-meter installation. An always-on PC runs during both rebate and non-rebate hours; do not assume the rebate applies to your account without confirming the meter and account conditions.

Measure your own PC for a tighter estimate
- Identify your account details. Check the electricity bill for the distribution utility, residential tariff category, meter phase and billing period.
- Measure wall consumption under representative use. Measure the PC alone or include the monitor if you want a combined figure. Include normal idle, streaming, encoding and rebooting periods, and use a representative average rather than a short peak. A plug-in electricity usage monitor that records kWh can supply this input; choose one suitable for your outlet and PC load. It measures consumption, not your utility’s price. No specific device is endorsed here.
- Use recorded energy where available. If the meter gives kWh over a representative period, use that reading. For a shorter interval, scale it to your expected billing period. Do not substitute the PC’s power-supply rating for measured wall consumption.
- Apply the tariff to the household total. Add the PC’s expected kWh to household usage, then apply the current tariff slabs and relevant adjustments. To isolate the PC’s incremental cost, price its units according to the marginal slabs they occupy.
