You can run a continuous YouTube live feed from prerecorded game reviews and walkthroughs by playing an ordered archive through an encoder or a cloud streaming service. First confirm your channel can livestream and that you have the rights to every video and audio track. If you need YouTube’s automatic archive, plan sessions shorter than 12 hours: YouTube says longer streams may not be captured at all.
Choose how to run the archive
The basic setup is a playlist of prepared videos feeding a live encoder, which sends the video to YouTube. YouTube describes encoders as suitable for gameplay, overlays, and advanced productions, and its encoder directory lists both software and hardware encoders as well as cloud services. The directory is a list of third-party options, not an endorsement or confirmation of their terms. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
| Approach | What it means | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted encoder | A computer runs the playback and encoding process and sends the feed to YouTube. | You control the local setup, but the computer, encoder process, and connection must keep running. |
| Cloud-managed service | A third-party cloud service runs the prepared-video stream. | It can reduce dependence on a computer at home, but requires reliance on that service. YouTube’s cited directory does not provide comparable prices or uptime promises. |
For either approach, treat the archive as a broadcast: test the whole feed, monitor it while live, and keep a separate recording if the videos matter to you.
Check channel eligibility and video rights first
Enable live streaming before you schedule
Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check early rather than on the day you intend to start. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility instructions and encoder setup guidance.

Clear every part of the feed
Review the rights status of the gameplay footage, captured game audio, soundtrack, commentary, and any third-party material in every archive video. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a detected match can replace the stream with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate it. The applicable game publisher’s policy and the rights to any music or other material still matter: YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish that a particular game may be rebroadcast continuously.
YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” This is YouTube’s contractual language, not legal advice. Read the YouTube livestream terms and its copyright guidance for live streams. If a rights holder has licensed the material but a stream is interrupted, YouTube says the holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.

Build and test the continuous feed
- Prepare the archive. Put the review and walkthrough files in the intended order in a playback system that can feed your encoder or cloud service. YouTube does not prescribe a particular playlist-automation tool, so choose one that can play the files reliably and repeat the sequence if that is your plan.
- Create the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder connection workflow to get the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder or service. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Run a full test before going public. Use a private or unlisted test, check the preview in Live Control Room, and verify that the watch page is accessible to the intended audience. Check picture, audio, and playback transitions between files. If you are recording locally, confirm the recording file is actually growing.
- Monitor while live. Keep an eye on the live preview and audio/video output, check that viewers can reach the watch page, and verify the local recording continues to grow. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20%; this is platform guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Its streaming tips cover bandwidth and operational checks.
Plan session lengths and preserve the archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. “Can” is not a guarantee. If the YouTube archive matters, break continuous operation into planned sessions shorter than 12 hours and keep a separate local recording. Restarting sessions can preserve opportunities for YouTube to create archives, but requires an operator or reliable automation; YouTube does not guarantee seamless viewer playback across session boundaries. See YouTube’s livestream archive guidance.
Check the local recording file during the session and after it ends. Storage needs depend on the recording bitrate, session duration, and how long you want to retain files; calculate capacity from those choices rather than assuming a fixed drive size. An external SSD is one possible local backup destination, but YouTube’s guidance does not recommend a particular model or capacity.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | The channel is unverified, has a current restriction, or first-time enablement is still processing. | Check channel verification and live-stream eligibility; enable the feature in advance because activation can take up to 24 hours. |
| The live feed shows a placeholder or is interrupted | YouTube detected third-party content, or a rights holder’s allowlist does not include your channel. | Review rights for the game footage, game audio, soundtrack, commentary, and other material. If you have a license, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. |
| The live control room has no usable preview | The encoder may not be sending to the intended stream, or the connection details may be wrong. | Recheck the stream URL and key in the encoder, then inspect the preview in Live Control Room before making the stream public. Treat the stream key as a secret. |
| The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete | The session exceeded 12 hours, or automatic archiving did not complete. | Keep archive-dependent sessions under 12 hours and retain a separate local recording; YouTube warns that longer streams may not be captured at all. |
| The local backup is absent or stops growing | Local recording may not have started, or the destination may be unavailable or out of space. | Check that recording is enabled, confirm the destination is accessible, and verify file growth during the broadcast rather than waiting until it ends. |
| Playback stalls or drops | The upload connection may not have enough capacity or stability for the outgoing feed. | Check the connection and encoder status, and leave the 20% upload-bandwidth headroom YouTube recommends. |
