To resume a prerecorded YouTube gaming stream after a server reboot, configure the server to launch its encoder again at startup, make sure the replay file, settings, credentials, and network are available, and configure YouTube to start the broadcast when encoder data arrives if you want to avoid a manual “Go live” step. YouTube’s auto-start setting does not restart OBS, FFmpeg, or the server process; it only controls what YouTube does after an encoder connects.
How reboot recovery works
Think of recovery as two separate jobs:
- Restart the encoder on the host. An operating-system startup mechanism or process supervisor must launch OBS, FFmpeg, or your chosen encoder after boot. It may also need to retry if the encoder exits.
- Reconnect and start the YouTube broadcast. The encoder needs YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube can be set to start the broadcast when it receives encoder data, or it may require a manual action in Live Control Room.
A reboot ends the encoder process that was running before it. Unless something on the server launches it again, the stream will not resume. Conversely, a startup entry that opens the encoder does not guarantee that the public broadcast is live: the encoder may start before networking is ready, fail to find the replay, or connect to a broadcast that has ended.
Prepare the replay and YouTube stream
Confirm the replay works before automating it
Start the encoder manually with the gaming replay and the intended YouTube account. Confirm the right file is accessible and that the stream reaches the expected YouTube broadcast. Fix playback, configuration, or account problems before adding startup automation; otherwise a reboot simply repeats the failure unattended.
Check the stream URL, key, and broadcast settings
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast you intend to use. YouTube describes the key as the means for the encoder to send its feed. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs.

Enable YouTube’s auto-start setting if the broadcast should go live when encoder data arrives. YouTube explains: “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” This setting governs YouTube’s response to incoming data; it is not a boot scheduler and does not launch the encoder.
If you create a new stream by choosing “Reuse settings,” check the copied auto-start and auto-stop selections rather than assuming they match what you want. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow can require you to click “Go live” after the preview appears; with auto-start enabled, the broadcast behavior may differ. Confirm the actual settings for the stream you are using.

Configure the server to launch the encoder at boot
Choose a startup mechanism for your operating system
Use an OS startup mechanism or a process supervisor appropriate to the server and encoder. For OBS, its launch parameters include a --startstreaming option, and a Windows startup entry or Task Scheduler task may be used to launch it. Those pieces are not a universal recovery recipe: exact steps depend on the OS, OBS version, account context, and how the replay and credentials are stored. The OBS launch-parameters reference documents arguments, not guaranteed end-to-end recovery after a reboot.
For a Linux service, Windows task, or other supervisor, configure the equivalent startup and retry behavior for your environment. The important requirements are that the process launches under the right account, can read the media and configuration, and can reconnect when needed. Do not assume a desktop startup shortcut, by itself, will handle delayed networking or encoder crashes.

Make boot-time dependencies available
- Replay path: Use a location that remains mounted and accessible to the account running the encoder. A path available in your interactive desktop session may not be available to a service account.
- Configuration and credentials: Ensure the boot-time process can access the encoder profile and YouTube stream key securely. Avoid embedding secrets in locations that can be exposed through logs or public scripts.
- Network readiness: Account for the possibility that the encoder starts before the router, DNS, or server network connection is ready. Use retry or delayed-start behavior suited to your OS and encoder, then confirm that it works rather than assuming startup timing.
- Failure recovery: Decide whether the host should restart the encoder after it exits and how repeated failures will be surfaced. Automatic retries cannot fix an inaccessible file, invalid key, or ended broadcast.
A community OBS discussion describes using startup or Task Scheduler together with --startstreaming and raises the risk of OBS starting before network equipment is ready. Treat that as a practical warning, not an official or guaranteed procedure. OBS’s YouTube guide likewise does not certify one cross-platform reboot-recovery configuration.
Test the complete recovery chain
- With the intended replay, account, and broadcast, start the stream manually and verify it reaches YouTube.
- Enable the server’s boot-time launch and any retry or network-readiness behavior you configured.
- Schedule a maintenance window and reboot the server deliberately.
- Check the host’s service, task, or process status and logs. Confirm that the encoder is running and sending data—not merely that its window opened.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room and the viewer-facing stream to confirm that the broadcast is actually live. If auto-start is off or the broadcast requires it, take the required “Go live” action.
- If uninterrupted recovery matters, test an encoder interruption and a network interruption as well as an orderly reboot. Confirm the encoder reconnects and YouTube returns to the intended broadcast.
These tests verify your own combination of operating system, encoder, replay storage, network, and YouTube settings; no single startup option proves the whole chain is reliable.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not return
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder does not start after reboot | Startup task or service did not run, or it ran under the wrong account. | Check the OS task/service status and logs, startup trigger, permissions, and executable path. |
| Encoder starts but cannot find the replay | The file was moved, its mount is unavailable, or the boot-time account uses a different path or permissions. | Verify the exact file path and read access in the same account context used at startup. |
| Encoder runs but does not connect to YouTube | Network is not ready, or the stream URL/key or encoder configuration is incorrect. | Check encoder logs, network availability, and the selected YouTube stream credentials. Keep the key private. |
| Encoder sends data, but the broadcast is not live | YouTube may be waiting for a manual start, or the selected broadcast’s auto-start setting is off. | Check Live Control Room’s preview and auto-start setting; take the required “Go live” action if applicable. |
| Stream works at first, then stops | The encoder process or network connection may have failed without a working retry, or the broadcast may no longer be available. | Inspect host and encoder logs, retry behavior, connectivity, and the broadcast’s current status. Test recovery after an interruption. |
Account for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube states that “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Reboot recovery does not establish that a longer, uninterrupted replay stream will be archived as one video. If the archive matters, plan around YouTube’s stated under-12-hour behavior rather than assuming an indefinitely running stream produces one complete recording.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the replay to keep running without a server or home computer staying on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the replay or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay powered on at home for the stream to continue.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
