A long pause between parts of a YouTube gaming livestream replay does not point to one confirmed cause. First identify whether you are watching one archived VOD, moving between two separate VODs, or rewinding a stream that is still live. Those are different situations: live latency, DVR behavior, archive capture, and ordinary playback trouble should not be treated as interchangeable.
First, identify what “between VOD segments” means
- A pause inside one archived replay: The video is already published as a recording, and playback stops or jumps at a point within that video.
- A gap between separate VODs: One livestream recording ends and another begins, perhaps because the creator started a new broadcast. This is not the same as a pause within one file.
- A pause while rewinding a live stream: You are watching the broadcast while it is still live and using pause or seek controls. That uses YouTube’s DVR feature.
Note the affected video, the timestamp where playback pauses, whether the stream is still live, and whether the player eventually resumes. YouTube’s official guidance does not document a standard “delay between VOD segments” or establish a single cause for this symptom.
Rule out a viewer-side playback problem
Test whether the symptom follows your app, device, or connection before assuming the replay itself is at fault. YouTube recommends switching internet connections, clearing the YouTube app cache, restarting or updating the device, and trying another supported device if the issue continues (Google Support: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues).
- Try the same replay on another supported device. If you normally use the YouTube app, try youtube.com in a browser, or vice versa.
- Switch networks if possible—for example, compare Wi-Fi with a mobile connection. If the pause occurs only on one network, that is useful evidence of a connection-specific playback problem, not proof of its precise cause.
- If you use the YouTube app, clear its cache using the device’s app settings. Restart the device, check for app or system updates, and test the replay again.
- Record whether the issue happens at the same timestamp on each device and connection. A symptom that follows one app or device differs from one that follows the video across tests.
These checks can help isolate the playback context; they are not a guaranteed fix for a particular VOD.

If you are rewinding a stream that is still live
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a livestream. It is a live viewing feature, not a diagnosis for a pause in an already published archive. DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; Apple TV, AirPlay, and older app versions have lower limits. If the creator disables DVR, viewers cannot seek back during the live broadcast, although a recording may still become available afterward (YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams).
Check whether the stream is still live and whether the pause happens during a seek or rewind. If it does, try watching from a current YouTube app or youtube.com on another supported device. A DVR limitation is relevant only to this live playback case; it does not explain a delay between portions of a completed VOD.

If the pause is in an archived livestream replay
Archive capture has separate limits from live DVR. YouTube says livestreams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends making a local archive backup (YouTube Help: Archive live streams). These limits do not establish how long archive availability takes, nor do they show that a pause between VOD portions is normal processing behavior.
For viewers
Try the viewer-side checks above and compare the same timestamp across devices or connections. If the pause remains at the same point across tests, report the video link, timestamp, and what you tried to the channel owner. That information helps distinguish a problem tied to one replay from one limited to a particular setup.

For the channel owner
- Check whether the broadcast exceeded 12 hours. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
- Compare the YouTube replay with your local recording, if you made one. YouTube’s livestream tips recommend checking that a local archive file is growing and verifying its integrity; they also recommend checking that the event is accessible through channel or watch pages and on mobile devices, and monitoring audio and video quality (YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips).
- Identify whether the supposed “segments” are separate VOD entries or parts of one replay. A local file can help establish whether a gap was already present in the recording, but it cannot by itself identify why YouTube playback pauses.
If the broadcast ran longer than 12 hours and there is no complete local archive, YouTube’s stated capture limit means a missing replay may not be recoverable from the automatic archive. The official guidance does not specify a standard archive-processing time.
Why live latency and HLS are not automatic explanations
YouTube defines stream latency as “the delay between your camera capturing an event and the event being displayed to viewers.” That is capture-to-viewer delay during a live broadcast, not the length of a pause inside an already published replay (YouTube Help: Understand live streaming latency).

YouTube says lower live latency leaves less read-ahead buffer and can mean more buffering; network congestion can delay a live stream even when a connection can sustain its average bitrate. Its typical figures are less than 10 seconds for most viewers on low-latency streams and less than 5 seconds for most viewers on ultra-low-latency streams. These are descriptions of live viewing, not expected VOD-gap durations.
HLS is another live-streaming detail that is easy to misread. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream; its HLS instructions specify segment durations from 1 to 4 seconds, with shorter segments producing lower latency (YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream). This describes live ingest and latency. It does not establish that HLS was used for the stream in question or explain a long pause between archived VOD portions.

Common symptoms and next checks
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The replay pauses at the same timestamp on multiple devices and networks. | Give the channel owner the video link and timestamp. If you own the channel, compare the replay with the local archive, if available. |
| The pause happens only on one device or app. | Try another supported device or youtube.com, clear the app cache, and restart or update the device. |
| The pause occurs while rewinding a stream that is still live. | Check whether DVR is enabled and consider the stream’s length and the device or app’s DVR limits. |
| A long stream has no complete archive. | Check its duration and whether a local archive exists; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. |
| You suspect HLS or a latency setting. | Do not treat either as a proven cause of an archived replay gap. YouTube’s guidance on them concerns live ingest or live playback. |
Keep a local recording for future broadcasts
For a creator, a local archive gives you a comparison copy if a YouTube replay is incomplete or behaves differently. YouTube’s livestream tips specifically recommend checking the local archive as it grows and verifying its integrity. This is a preventive backup, not a way to repair a VOD that has already been captured with a gap.
Or let it run in the cloud
