How the chips and performance claims evolved
2022: M1 Max and M1 Ultra establish the product
Apple introduced Mac Studio with two chip tiers: M1 Max and the higher-capacity M1 Ultra. Apple said the M1 Ultra model could play up to 18 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video. It also reported SSD performance up to 7.4GB/s. These are Apple’s stated figures, not independent test results.
2023: M2 Max and M2 Ultra increase capacity
The 2023 models raised the memory ceilings to 96GB on M2 Max and 192GB on M2 Ultra. Apple specified memory bandwidth of 400GB/s for M2 Max and 800GB/s for M2 Ultra. In its stated comparisons, Apple said M2 Max was up to 50 percent faster than the previous-generation Mac Studio and M2 Ultra up to 3x faster than the M1 Ultra Mac Studio. Those multipliers apply to Apple’s comparison workloads; they are not universal speed ratings.

2025: M4 Max and M3 Ultra create a split-generation lineup
Apple paired M4 Max with M3 Ultra in the 2025 Mac Studio. The Ultra tier offered up to 512GB unified memory and up to 16TB SSD, while M4 Max supported up to 128GB memory. Apple described M3 Ultra as nearly 2x faster than M4 Max for workloads that use high CPU/GPU core counts and large unified memory. The comparison illustrates the Ultra’s role for some demanding workloads, not a guarantee that it is faster for every task.
2026: M5 Max and M5 Ultra
Apple’s August 2026 announcement lists M5 Max with an 18-core CPU, up to 40-core GPU, and up to 128GB unified memory. M5 Ultra supports up to 512GB and 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth. Apple reports up to 1.3x higher multithreaded performance and up to 1.8x faster graphics versus the previous generation, along with application-specific AI and rendering comparisons. It also says M5 Ultra can handle up to 33 streams of 8K ProRes 422 at 30 fps. These are Apple claims tied to its specified comparisons and workloads, rather than independent benchmarks or a single overall speed measure.

Memory, storage, and connectivity changed the most visibly
Memory capacity expanded from a maximum of 128GB at launch to 192GB on M2 Ultra, then 512GB on M3 Ultra. Apple specifies the same 512GB maximum for M5 Ultra. The 2025 M3 Ultra announcement raised the stated SSD ceiling to 16TB from the original 8TB maximum. These capacity limits vary by chip tier and configuration.
The original 2022 system had four rear Thunderbolt 4 ports, 10Gb Ethernet, two USB-A ports, HDMI, and a high-impedance headphone jack; the front had two USB-C ports and an SD card slot. Apple said that model supported Wi-Fi 6. The 2023 update added Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, along with higher-bandwidth HDMI supporting up to 8K resolution and 240Hz. Apple said M2 Ultra could support up to six Pro Display XDRs.

Thunderbolt 5 arrived with the 2025 generation, and Apple describes it on the 2026 models as well. For 2025, Apple stated transfer speeds up to 120Gb/s. The M3 Ultra announcement also said it could drive up to eight Pro Display XDRs at full 6K resolution. Display counts and resolutions are Apple-stated maximums for particular models, not a promise that every Mac Studio configuration supports the same setup.
What stayed the same—and what the changes mean
Across these announcements, Apple continues to position Mac Studio as a compact desktop for professional work, with extensive built-in ports. The meaningful changes are chiefly inside the system and at its connections: newer chip generations, higher memory options, greater stated storage capacity, newer wireless standards, stronger display support, and Thunderbolt 5 from 2025 onward.

Max and Ultra are different tiers, not just consecutive model years. The Ultra versions generally offer higher ceilings for cores and unified memory; those advantages matter most when the software and projects can use them. Apple’s examples span video editing, rendering, coding, AI and scientific workloads, so a headline comparison in one application should not be treated as a ranking for all work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge a Mac Studio generation for your work
- Start with your actual applications. Check whether your work is limited by CPU, GPU, memory capacity, or a particular accelerator. A vendor comparison for one app does not settle performance in another.
- Estimate project memory needs. Large video timelines, complex 3D scenes, and other memory-heavy work may benefit from a higher-capacity tier; choose based on the projects you run rather than the maximum number alone.
- Plan internal and external storage. Match SSD capacity to active projects and decide whether an external Thunderbolt storage workflow suits your archive and scratch-space needs.
- Check the display setup and ports. Confirm the model’s supported displays, resolution, refresh rate, and port requirements against your monitors and accessories.
- Decide whether external expansion is enough. Mac Studio can connect external expansion chassis over Thunderbolt, but it does not offer internal PCIe expansion. Apple points users who need internal expansion to Mac Pro.
Apple’s performance numbers throughout these generations are vendor claims. Read each alongside its named application, comparison system, and workload; “up to” results do not establish a single all-purpose speed multiplier. The announcements do not establish independent sales or adoption figures, so claims about how widely Mac Studio is used should not be inferred from them.
