Capture the rendered page as image bytes, then upload those bytes to an S3 object. The screenshot step and the S3 step are separate: your capture tool returns a buffer or file, while AWS credentials or a presigned upload URL authorize storage. This guide shows both a Playwright capture and a hosted-API option, then uploads the result to Amazon S3.
Choose how to capture the page
Use a hosted screenshot API when you want a capture service to render the page, or run browser automation such as Playwright when you want to manage the browser runtime yourself. In either case, decide what the image should contain before uploading it.
Choose the capture area
- Viewport: captures the visible browser area. This is suitable when the output should match a screen view.
- Full page: captures the scrollable document. The resulting image can be much taller and larger than a viewport screenshot.
- Element: captures a selected page element, useful when only a component or report matters.
Playwright supports these capture choices, output formats, quality controls, scaling, and masking. Consult its Page API reference and screenshots guide for the options supported by the version you install.
Choose an image format
PNG is lossless and can preserve fine details; JPEG and WebP can reduce file size, depending on content and quality settings. There is no universally best format. Choose based on whether fidelity or smaller objects matter more to your application.

Capture a screenshot with Playwright
The following Node.js example navigates to a URL and obtains screenshot bytes in memory. Install Playwright and its browser before running it; see the Playwright screenshots guide for installation and capture details.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const targetUrl = 'https://example.com';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto(targetUrl, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
const screenshot = await page.screenshot({
type: 'png',
fullPage: true
});
// `screenshot` is a Buffer suitable for upload to S3.
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Use fullPage: false or omit the option for a viewport capture. Playwright also supports element screenshots and masking; these can help limit the capture to relevant content or obscure regions the output should not reveal. Consider whether the page has loaded its important content before capturing: pages that load images or data lazily may need scrolling or a targeted wait before the screenshot call.
Upload the bytes to Amazon S3
For a trusted backend, use an AWS SDK and credentials supplied through the environment or the runtime’s credential mechanism. Do not embed general AWS credentials in browser code. This example uses the AWS SDK for JavaScript v3 and a unique key to avoid unintentionally replacing an earlier capture.

import { randomUUID } from 'node:crypto';
import { S3Client, PutObjectCommand } from '@aws-sdk/client-s3';
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const bucket = process.env.S3_BUCKET;
if (!bucket) throw new Error('Set S3_BUCKET');
const targetUrl = 'https://example.com';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto(targetUrl, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
const imageBytes = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png', fullPage: true });
const key = `screenshots/${randomUUID()}.png`;
const s3 = new S3Client({ region: process.env.AWS_REGION });
await s3.send(new PutObjectCommand({
Bucket: bucket,
Key: key,
Body: imageBytes,
ContentType: 'image/png'
}));
console.log(JSON.stringify({ bucket, key }));
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Install the required packages with npm install playwright @aws-sdk/client-s3, and configure the AWS SDK with credentials that can write only to the intended bucket or key prefix. The SDK obtains credentials using its configured provider chain; keep secret keys out of source code. The program records the bucket and key rather than assuming the object is publicly accessible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use a stable key only when replacement is intended
An upload to an existing key replaces that object. Use an application-generated unique key, as above, if captures should be retained separately. A stable, versioned key can be appropriate when the latest capture is meant to replace a known object.
Let a client upload through a presigned URL
If the browser or another client must upload directly to S3, have a trusted backend create a presigned PUT URL for one bucket and key. The client receives permission to perform the signed upload without receiving AWS credentials. The URL is temporary authority, not a permanent public link to the resulting image. AWS explains presigned URL behavior and cautions users to protect them in its S3 User Guide.

Create the URL on the backend
Example using the AWS SDK for JavaScript v3; the server must have permission to put the intended object. Keep the expiry short enough for the upload workflow.
import { S3Client, PutObjectCommand } from '@aws-sdk/client-s3';
import { getSignedUrl } from '@aws-sdk/s3-request-presigner';
import { randomUUID } from 'node:crypto';
const s3 = new S3Client({ region: process.env.AWS_REGION });
const key = `screenshots/${randomUUID()}.png`;
const command = new PutObjectCommand({
Bucket: process.env.S3_BUCKET,
Key: key,
ContentType: 'image/png'
});
const uploadUrl = await getSignedUrl(s3, command, { expiresIn: 300 });
// Return uploadUrl and key to the authorized client over your application API.
Upload the exact bytes with the signed method and headers
The content type used when creating the signature must match the header sent by the client. Send the raw image bytes as the request body, not JSON or a base64-wrapped string.
const response = await fetch(uploadUrl, {
method: 'PUT',
headers: { 'Content-Type': 'image/png' },
body: imageBytes
});
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`S3 upload failed: ${response.status} ${response.statusText}`);
}
// Persist the bucket and key in your application for later authorized access.
A presigned URL is a bearer token: anyone who obtains it may use the permitted operation while it remains valid. AWS notes that the URL’s effective lifetime cannot exceed its configured expiry or the lifetime of the credentials used to create it; temporary credentials may cause earlier expiration. AWS recommends protecting presigned URLs appropriately. See Uploading objects with presigned URLs.

Decide how stored screenshots will be accessed
Store the bucket and object key as application data. Do not treat a presigned PUT URL as the eventual image URL: it authorizes the upload operation and expires. Decide separately how readers or services should retrieve the object, using your application’s access controls and an appropriate S3 access method.
For presigned URL configuration, Boto3’s guide recommends Signature Version 4, the bucket Region, and virtual-hosted style addressing in its configuration guidance. Those are Boto3-specific recommendations, not universal requirements for every AWS SDK or client. See Boto3 presigned URLs.

ScreenshotNeo returns screenshot bytes or a PDF from one GET request, which you can pass to the same S3 upload step. Its API accepts common screenshot API parameter names, making migration easier. The request below writes the image response to a local file; your backend can instead upload the response bytes directly to S3.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The capture is blank or misses content: confirm navigation reached the intended page and wait for the relevant content or selector before capturing. Pages that load content lazily may need an interaction or scroll before capture.
- The uploaded object is not the image you expected: check that the capture call returns the intended viewport, full-page, or element screenshot, and that the request body contains the raw bytes.
- S3 reports a signature mismatch: verify the HTTP method, object key, expiry, bucket Region, URL integrity, and all signed headers. If the signature includes
Content-Type, send the exact matching value. Synchronize the machine clock as well. AWS lists these checks in its presigned upload troubleshooting guidance. - The presigned URL expires before upload completes: create it closer to the upload attempt and choose an expiry that allows the expected transfer, while keeping the bearer URL exposure window limited. Temporary credentials can expire sooner than the URL’s configured lifetime.
- A previous screenshot disappeared: the upload reused an existing key, replacing its object. Generate unique keys or intentionally adopt versioned naming.
- The SDK cannot write to S3: check the runtime’s credentials, bucket and key, Region configuration, and permission to put the object at that key.
Cost and reliability considerations
The workflow has separate failure and cost points: browser rendering or a hosted screenshot request can fail before storage, and the S3 upload can fail after capture. Log capture status, bucket, key, and upload outcome without logging secrets such as full presigned URLs. Retrying an upload to the same key replaces its object if the first attempt actually succeeded; use a unique key per capture or make retry behavior intentional.
No general capture speed or price comparison follows from the implementation pattern alone. Hosted screenshot API pricing and request limits vary by provider; check the selected provider’s current official terms. For self-managed Playwright, you operate the browser runtime and its resources yourself.

Does a presigned PUT URL make the uploaded screenshot public?
No. It grants temporary permission for the signed S3 operation; access to the stored object is a separate decision.
Can I upload a screenshot buffer without saving a local file?
Yes. Playwright can return screenshot bytes, which an AWS SDK can upload as the request body.
Will uploading twice to the same key keep both screenshots?
No. An upload to an existing key replaces that object unless your storage configuration and naming strategy provide a different versioning outcome.
