In YouTube Studio, copy the key for the intended stream and replace the value saved in your encoder. If the key may have been exposed or invalidated, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder with the new one. If the key is correct, work through encoder software, feed and computer health, then your outbound internet connection.
Check the stream destination and current key

In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Stream to open the stream setup in Live Control Room.

Copy the stream URL and stream key for the intended stream. In your encoder, confirm that the server field contains the current stream URL and the stream-key field contains the matching key. A key is a credential YouTube uses to accept the encoder’s feed; a stale key or one paired with the wrong destination can prevent the connection.

Save the settings, then try starting the encoder again and watch Live Control Room for its health messages and preview.

Reset a key that may be compromised or no longer valid
Reset the key if you suspect it has been exposed or otherwise invalidated. In Live Control Room, select Stream, locate Stream key, and choose Reset. Copy the replacement key and update the encoder before restarting it. The old saved value will not be the key to use after the reset.
YouTube says only channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and update your encoder whenever you reset it. For a recurring channel, YouTube’s Reuse settings function copies the previous stream’s key and other settings, so confirm that any reused key is still the one configured in the encoder. If the key is right, isolate the next likely cause
Check these in order so you do not replace working equipment to solve a credential mismatch.

If your software signs in to YouTube directly instead of asking for a stream key, contact the encoder vendor’s support team. YouTube notes that encoder software may need an update to work with YouTube Live.

If it uses a key, install the latest version available from the encoder vendor, then recheck the server and key fields.

YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends using the latest encoder version.
Feed, encoding, and computer load

Look at the encoder’s preview and error messages. If available, check a local recording or archive: a recording that is also missing audio or video points toward the source or encoding path rather than the YouTube key.

Check computer or encoder load while the stream is running. Excessive CPU use can interfere with encoding; close unnecessary workloads or reduce the strain on the current setup, then test again.

For YouTube’s documented Incorrect stream format error, use H.264 video and AAC audio. Check that the encoder is actually sending those formats, rather than relying only on a preset’s name.

Outbound internet connection
If the local preview and recording look healthy but YouTube is not receiving a stable feed, test the outbound connection from the streaming location. If that test points to a connection problem, contact your internet service provider. A working connection for ordinary browsing does not by itself establish that the encoder’s outbound feed is healthy.

Use Live Control Room messages to judge the test
Live Control Room displays errors alongside the stream health indicator. YouTube classifies red errors as critical: they may stop an event from starting or cause viewer problems. Yellow errors may reduce event quality. Resolve the specific message shown there, then retry and check the preview rather than assuming every startup failure is a key problem. Check channel eligibility and test before relying on the stream

YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction within the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. These are YouTube Help eligibility instructions, not a promise that a particular channel will be approved within that period; check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Run a test live stream, check the preview, monitor stream health, and confirm the event is accessible to viewers. YouTube’s event-planning tips say to set up the encoder at least two hours before an event and start it 15 minutes beforehand. Treat those as preparation recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
What the archive note does—and does not—mean
YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement concerns archiving; it does not establish a maximum stream duration or prove that a continuous 24/7 stream will remain live. The official setup and troubleshooting pages cited here do not establish a universal 24/7 configuration or uptime guarantee. See YouTube’s encoder setup page.

When different encoder equipment is relevant
A stream-key error is normally a configuration issue, not a reason by itself to buy new equipment. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders. Consider changing the encoder only if the existing setup does not meet the production need: YouTube describes external hardware such as preamps and microphones as part of some workflows and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. Choose based on compatibility with your existing workflow, need for external audio or video gear, operator skills and monitoring requirements—not as a cure for a mismatched key.
