You can keep a prepared lecture looping on YouTube from Debian by sending it to a YouTube encoder event with FFmpeg, then monitoring the encoder, network, and local recording. A running FFmpeg process does not guarantee YouTube will save an all-day stream: YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a durable YouTube archive, plan event endings and rotations before that threshold and keep a separate local recording.
What you need before starting
- A Debian machine that can stay powered on and connected to the internet, with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected stream settings.
- A lecture video file that you have the rights to broadcast. Check that its video and audio streams are suitable for YouTube Live, or plan to re-encode them.
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube lists these as eligibility requirements for live streaming.
- FFmpeg built with the encoders and muxers your chosen command needs. Debian package versions and compiled features vary by release, so check the target machine rather than assuming every FFmpeg command will work.
Prepare the YouTube encoder event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream and choose the encoder workflow.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key. Use the values shown for that event; do not substitute an example URL or key from a guide.
- Treat the stream key as a password. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Keep the event open in Live Control Room so you can check the incoming preview and stream-health messages once FFmpeg starts.
Check the Debian FFmpeg build and input
Inspect the installed build and available components before relying on an example command:

ffprobe -hide_banner -i lecture.mp4The sample below expects an FFmpeg build with libx264, AAC encoding, the FIFO muxer, and FLV support. The ffprobe output helps you confirm that the file has a video stream and, if expected, an audio stream. If your file has no audio, remove the audio mapping and AAC options; if it has multiple tracks, choose the intended stream explicitly. FFmpeg options and availability can differ by Debian release and build.
Choose ingest settings YouTube can receive
YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video with AAC or MP3 audio. Its published H.264 recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. It gives the same 6 Mbps and 10 Mbps recommendations for H.265/AV1 at those respective resolutions and frame rates. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that your Debian host or internet connection can sustain them.

- Resolution and frame rate: Set a profile that matches the source and the visual detail in the lecture. A static slide presentation usually needs less motion detail than a video-heavy lecture, but do not exceed what the connection can sustain.
- Bitrate: Use YouTube’s current table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check sustained upload capacity and leave room for network variation rather than setting the encoder at the connection’s theoretical maximum.
- Keyframes: At 30 fps, a two-second interval means a 60-frame GOP. The example fixes keyframes at that interval.
- Transport: Prefer the RTMPS server URL provided by Live Control Room. RTMPS encrypts the connection; use the exact URL YouTube supplies for the event.
Start a looping 1080p30 H.264 stream
This example loops one local video indefinitely, reads it in real time, re-encodes it as 1080p30 H.264 with AAC audio, and sends it through FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer. Replace the file path, server URL, and key with your own values. The bitrate is YouTube’s 10 Mbps H.264 recommendation for 1080p30; choose another profile if your source or connection calls for it.

"rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"The video mapping selects the first video stream; the trailing ? makes the audio mapping optional. If your FFmpeg build rejects a particular option, consult its local help and documentation rather than assuming the command is portable to every Debian build. If the source is already encoded in a YouTube-compatible format and meets the target frame rate, keyframe, bitrate, and audio requirements, stream-copy can reduce CPU load by replacing the video and audio encoder options with -c:v copy -c:a copy. Stream-copy cannot repair an unsuitable codec, bitrate, frame rate, or keyframe interval; use re-encoding when those need to change.

Run under a service manager
For unattended operation, run FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd so it can be started at boot and restarted after a process exit. Keep the stream key in a root-readable environment file or another access-controlled mechanism rather than embedding it in a world-readable unit file. Configure a restart policy only after testing: automatic restarts can help after an unexpected process exit, but they will not fix invalid credentials, a broken source file, a prolonged network outage, a failed host, or a YouTube-side restriction. Inspect service logs and Live Control Room rather than treating a restart loop as a healthy stream.
Make recovery, monitoring, and recording part of the setup
What the FIFO recovery options do—and do not do
The FIFO muxer options in the example tell FFmpeg to attempt recovery after temporary output errors, wait five seconds between attempts, and restart on a keyframe. This can help with transient network errors. It cannot correct a revoked or mistyped stream key, incompatible media, permanent loss of connectivity, host failure, or YouTube rejecting or restricting the stream.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Start the event and FFmpeg while you can watch Live Control Room. Wait for the incoming preview and check the stream-health messages.
- Test representative parts of the lecture, including typical audio levels, slides, motion, and any changes between clips. Confirm the outgoing quality is stable.
- Watch the Debian process and logs, the host’s network connection, and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. A process that remains running does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy feed.
- Record locally as a separate backup and verify that the output file is actually growing and can be played. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup; confirm the recording destination has enough free space and a retention plan.
Plan YouTube archives separately from the continuous feed
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends a local backup. It also warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That warning makes a single uninterrupted 24/7 event a poor choice when a dependable YouTube archive is required.
Plan explicit event endings and rotations before the 12-hour boundary, then verify that each resulting archive appears and plays correctly. The encoder process and YouTube event are separate: restarting or looping FFmpeg does not itself create a new YouTube event or guarantee an archive. Keep the separate local recording even when YouTube archives are available.

Common problems and fixes

Copyright and lecture-content checks
Use only lecture recordings, music, images, and other material you are entitled to broadcast. Repeatedly looping a file does not grant broadcast rights, and an otherwise valid FFmpeg stream can still encounter YouTube restrictions because of its content. Check YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright rules for your channel and content before scheduling a continuous feed.
