To create an Indian-language PDF with DocRaptor, put Unicode text in HTML, load a font with the necessary script coverage, apply it with CSS, and submit the HTML as document_content to DocRaptor’s PDF API. The renderer must also support the script’s OpenType shaping. “Indian-language” can mean several scripts—including Devanagari, Bengali, Gurmukhi, Gujarati, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam—so test the language and font used by your actual document.

Choose a font and rendering approach

Pick a font based on the characters your document uses, not just its name. A font needs glyph coverage for those characters, while the renderer needs to shape them correctly—for example, by positioning marks and applying substitutions. Prince documents Indic shaping and automatic font fallback, but a visible PDF does not prove that every glyph came from your intended font.

You can use a font available to the rendering environment or supply one through CSS @font-face. DocRaptor documents the web-font approach. Compare candidate fonts and setup options on these points:

  • Coverage of the target script and text, including signs and punctuation.
  • Support in the renderer for the font’s OpenType shaping model.
  • Font-file format compatibility with your DocRaptor pipeline.
  • Whether the renderer can reliably retrieve the font resource.
  • Availability of the weights and styles used in the document.

There is no single typeface established as best for every Indian language. Prince’s styling documentation lists Lohit Devanagari and Noto Serif among examples for Devanagari/Hindi; choose and validate a font for your actual script and content. Prince’s styling documentation describes font selection, formats, fallback, and shaping.

Declare the font and submit HTML to DocRaptor

Replace the example font URL, language tag, and sample text below with your own. The font URL must be accessible to the rendering service. This illustrates DocRaptor’s documented @font-face and document_content workflow; it is not a guarantee that a particular font, URL, or account pipeline has been tested.

<!doctype html>
<html lang="hi">
<head>
  <meta charset="utf-8">
  <style>
    @font-face {
      font-family: "IndianText";
      src: url("https://your-host.example/fonts/your-script-font.woff2") format("woff2");
      font-style: normal;
      font-weight: 400;
    }
    .indian-text {
      font-family: "IndianText", sans-serif;
    }
  </style>
</head>
<body>
  <p class="indian-text" lang="hi">यहाँ अपना परीक्षण पाठ रखें।</p>
</body>
</html>

Submit the HTML as document_content and request PDF output. DocRaptor’s custom-font tutorial shows the API workflow and a test-mode option for a watermarked test document. Consult the DocRaptor font documentation for its current font guidance.

Check font format support

DocRaptor’s help article says WOFF2 requires Pipeline 8 or higher. The public documentation does not establish which pipeline is assigned to your account, so confirm it before relying on WOFF2. Do not assume a different format will be available in your specific environment without checking. Prince’s documentation lists WOFF/WOFF2, TrueType, and OpenType support, but the DocRaptor pipeline requirement is the service-specific constraint to verify.

Declare the styles you use

If your document includes bold or italic text, provide the corresponding font faces and declare their weight and style where available. Prince may synthesize bold or italic when a matching face is missing, which can change the appearance; inspect each style that appears in the PDF.

Account for the target script’s shaping

Prince’s release history records OpenType shaping support for Devanagari/Hindi, Bengali, Gurmukhi/Punjabi, Gujarati, Oriya (also called Odia), Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. This is historical renderer capability, not confirmation of the Prince version assigned to an individual DocRaptor account.

For Devanagari, Prince 13’s release notes from November 2019 identify support for the Indic2 OpenType shaping model needed by newer fonts such as Noto Serif Devanagari and Nirmala. That version-specific note does not establish which renderer version your DocRaptor account currently uses. See Prince 13 release notes and the Prince release history.

Validate a representative PDF

Before generating a large batch, render a small document containing the combinations and styles used in production. Check the PDF visually and, where relevant, confirm its text can be selected and searched.

  • Include language-specific conjuncts, vowel signs, marks, numerals, and punctuation—not only isolated basic letters.
  • Inspect normal, bold, and italic text separately if the document uses those styles.
  • Look for missing-glyph boxes, unexpected changes in appearance, mispositioned marks, and altered line breaks.
  • Check whether fallback may be masking missing coverage in the chosen font. Prince documents that it tries the next font in the family list when glyphs are missing.

Prince documents a prince-no-fallback mechanism that can make missing glyphs warn rather than silently switch fonts, where available. Use it as a diagnostic aid only if it is supported in the rendering environment you use.

Troubleshoot font and rendering problems

The PDF shows boxes or characters are missing

  • Confirm the HTML contains the intended Unicode characters, not text encoded for a legacy font.
  • Check that the font covers the specific characters in the document.
  • Verify that the CSS font-family name matches the font-family descriptor in @font-face, and that the rule applies to the target text.
  • Check for unexpected fallback to another family in the CSS list.

The cited DocRaptor and Prince pages do not provide a legacy-encoding conversion procedure; if your text comes from a legacy encoding, investigate that conversion separately.

The font does not load

  • Confirm that the font URL is reachable by the rendering service, not only by your local browser.
  • Check the file format against your account’s DocRaptor pipeline. In particular, DocRaptor specifies Pipeline 8 or higher for WOFF2.
  • Reduce the case to a small HTML file using the same font resource and text. If it still fails, ask DocRaptor which rendering pipeline/version applies to your account.

Letters render, but marks or combinations look wrong

Visible characters alone do not confirm correct shaping or complete glyph coverage. Test representative combinations and check renderer support for the font’s shaping model. If the font uses a newer Devanagari shaping model, Prince 13’s Indic2 note is relevant, but it does not confirm the version running for your DocRaptor account.

Bold or italic looks different

Check whether matching bold or italic font files are declared and loaded. Prince may synthesize a style when its corresponding face is absent; compare the rendered styles with the supplied faces and inspect the result.
