OBS Studio is the best-supported free choice for running a recorded study stream locally on YouTube. It can encode and send a video or playlist to YouTube Live, but your computer, media, power, and internet connection must keep working for the stream to continue. OBS Studio is open-source and free to use for any purpose, according to the OBS Project. What a 24/7 local stream requires
OBS does not make a stream self-sustaining simply because it is free. For a local broadcast, the computer must remain on and run the encoder; the media must remain accessible; power and internet service must remain available; and the connection must be able to send the stream. A failure in any of these can interrupt the broadcast. The reviewed setup guidance does not promise uninterrupted operation or automatic recovery, so arrange a way to monitor the stream and restart it if needed.

Set up a recorded study stream with OBS
- Prepare the recording or playlist. Use video and audio you have permission to broadcast. Keep the files accessible to the computer that will run OBS.
- Configure OBS to play the media. Add the recording or playlist to an OBS scene or source and arrange playback so the material can repeat. Consult current OBS help for the exact controls available in your installed version; the sources reviewed do not establish a particular menu path.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Use YouTube’s live workflow to create or schedule the broadcast and connect the encoder using YouTube’s current instructions. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not share it publicly, and replace it if it is exposed.
- Check the incoming feed before relying on it. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended picture and sound, then start the broadcast. Keep the computer, media, power, and upload connection available while it runs.
- Plan for interruptions. Monitor the broadcast and decide how you will restart the encoder or reconnect if the computer, connection, or stream fails. OBS being free does not itself provide automatic recovery or guarantee continuous uptime.

Using OBS, a cloud service, or a “study stream” label does not grant permission to rebroadcast a recording. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions say the provider must have the rights needed to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including relevant music licensing rights involving artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Applicable laws and regulations also apply.

YouTube says livestreams must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and it may restrict a creator’s ability to livestream. A license or permission may be important, but it does not by itself guarantee that automated systems will never interrupt a broadcast.
Troubleshooting interruptions
- The stream stops when you leave or shut down the computer: OBS is running locally, so the computer must stay on and the encoder must continue running. Keep the local setup powered and active, or use a cloud workflow instead.
- YouTube is not receiving the broadcast: Check that the encoder is connected to the live event using the current YouTube workflow and that the stream key is correct. If a key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- The video or playlist stops advancing: Check that the media files are still available and that playback is configured to repeat as intended.
- The broadcast drops after a power or internet interruption: Restore the missing dependency, reconnect the encoder, and verify the feed in YouTube. The reviewed guidance does not establish automatic recovery for the local OBS setup.
- The stream is interrupted over a rights concern: Review the material’s permissions, particularly music rights, and YouTube’s applicable policies. Do not assume that prerecorded content is automatically cleared.
Costs and equipment considerations
OBS has no software charge according to its project help, but a local 24/7 setup still relies on a computer, electricity, and internet service. No particular computer form factor or specification is established as necessary here; choose equipment based on whether it can handle your intended media and remain available for the broadcast. A cloud service shifts the ongoing stream operation away from your computer, but its price and terms should be checked directly before choosing a plan.
