To generate a GST invoice PDF with DocRaptor, first build and validate the invoice data in your application, render it into HTML, then send that HTML to DocRaptor’s PDF API. DocRaptor converts content into a PDF; it does not decide the tax treatment, check every legal invoice requirement, or obtain an Invoice Reference Number (IRN). If e-invoicing applies to your business, complete the relevant GST portal or IRP reporting workflow separately and include the returned invoice details and QR representation in the document where required.
What you need before generating the PDF
Keep invoice facts in your application’s trusted billing or data layer, not in presentation code. Store the supplier and recipient details, invoice number and date, line items, taxable values, applicable tax breakdown, and any e-invoice response data as structured fields. Validate that record before rendering; a polished PDF cannot correct an invalid number, date, or tax calculation.
Rule 46 of India’s Central Goods and Services Tax Rules, 2017 sets out invoice particulars, with conditional requirements that vary by transaction and issuer. Use it as a checklist, not as a universal template or substitute for GST advice: CGST Rules, 2017 (CBIC).
Check the applicable invoice particulars
- Supplier name, address, and GSTIN.
- A consecutive invoice serial number, unique for the financial year and no longer than 16 characters. Rule 46 permits letters, numerals, hyphen or dash, and slash.
- Invoice issue date.
- Recipient identity and, when registered, GSTIN or UIN. Additional recipient particulars may apply in specified cases, including certain supplies to unregistered recipients.
- HSN code and description; for goods, quantity and unit.
- Total supply value, taxable value after applicable discount or abatement, and the applicable tax rate and amount particulars.
- Conditional particulars for specified cases, such as exports, supplies to an SEZ, or invoices issued under the Rule 48(4) e-invoice process.
Check the GST Portal’s invoice furnishing guidance as well: it says invoice dates must not be future dates or precede GST registration, and invoice numbers should be unique within a financial year. Apply the validation relevant to your transaction and issuer: GST Portal: Invoice Furnishing Facility.

Build and send the invoice HTML to DocRaptor
- Validate the invoice record. Enforce numbering, date, identity, arithmetic, and transaction-specific checks in your application before creating the document.
- Render HTML from the validated record. Escape user-supplied text, format dates and amounts consistently, and include only particulars that apply to the supply. Do not rely on CSS or a template to calculate GST.
- Submit the HTML to DocRaptor. Send JSON to https://api.docraptor.com/docs with
typeset topdfand eitherdocument_contentfor HTML ordocument_urlfor retrievable content. For direct REST requests, the API documents HTTP Basic Authentication with your API key as the username and a blank password; it also documents query-parameter authentication. - Check and handle the response. A direct successful response contains PDF bytes. Hosted-document and asynchronous-job workflows return a URL or status identifier rather than the PDF bytes in that response. Inspect the HTTP status and any error response before treating the result as a document.
- Store or deliver the PDF through your application. Apply your own access controls. Confirm invoice retention requirements with the applicable rules and your company policy.

Render the PDF so it is usable as an invoice
Choose page size and media deliberately
DocRaptor’s documented default page size is US Letter. For an Indian business invoice, specify the intended page size and margins rather than inheriting that default. Its sizing guide shows @page { size: A4 }: Page size guidance.
The API reference says print media rules are applied by default. Check that your invoice CSS works under the media setting you use; screen-only styling can produce unexpected output. See DocRaptor print media guidance.

Plan for long invoices and external assets
For long line-item tables, CSS properties such as break-before, break-after, and break-inside can suggest where content should paginate. They are suggestions, not a guarantee: a block taller than a page cannot be kept together on one page. Test representative invoices with short and long item lists. Page-break guidance.

DocRaptor supports inline, embedded, and external CSS. Embedded styles can avoid a separate stylesheet fetch. If you use external CSS, images, or fonts, make sure the render service can retrieve them; relative asset URLs need a valid base URL. CSS guidance.
Use test mode only for layout iteration
DocRaptor says test documents do not count against monthly limits, but test-mode PDFs carry a watermark. Use them to refine layout, and use the appropriate non-test configuration for a final invoice. DocRaptor API reference.

Keep e-invoice reporting separate from PDF generation
Section 31 and Rules 46 and 48 of India’s GST framework govern invoice obligations. Under Rule 48(4), notified classes of registered persons must prepare invoices using the particulars in Form GST INV-01 and obtain an IRN by uploading invoice information to the common GST portal. Rule 48(5) says that an invoice issued by a person subject to sub-rule (4) in another manner is not treated as an invoice. Rule 46 also contains an IRN-embedded QR-code provision for invoices issued through that method. Consult the current rules and applicability for your business: CGST Act, 2017, CGST Rules, 2017, and E-Invoice Registration Portal.
DocRaptor does not create the e-invoice QR code. Its tutorial explains how to include a QR code as an HTML image; for a covered taxpayer, use the QR image or data returned by the applicable e-invoice process rather than inventing an IRN or adding a decorative code: DocRaptor QR code generation.
An IRIS IRP release note states that taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover (AATO) of ₹10 crore or more must report covered invoices, credit notes, and debit notes within 30 days from the invoice date, effective 1 April 2025. This is a dated portal notice with a stated scope, not a complete statement of current e-invoice applicability. Troubleshoot common PDF-generation problems
- The response is an error, not a PDF: Check the HTTP status and response body. Confirm the endpoint, JSON shape, authentication, and whether the selected mode returns bytes, a hosted URL, or a job status.
- External CSS, fonts, or images are missing: Ensure DocRaptor can retrieve each external asset and that relative URLs have a valid base URL. Consider embedding CSS when a separate fetch is unnecessary.
- The PDF looks unlike the browser preview: Review the print media rules and the intended media setting; DocRaptor applies print rules by default.
- The page size is unexpected: Set an explicit page size and margins rather than assuming the default is A4.
- A long row or table splits across pages: Use page-break properties as pagination guidance, and adjust the content structure if an indivisible block is taller than a page.
- A test PDF has a watermark: That is expected in test mode. Generate the final document using the appropriate non-test configuration.
- The invoice has no IRN or valid e-invoice QR representation: DocRaptor only renders supplied content. Complete the applicable portal/IRP process and pass its returned invoice data and QR representation to your template.
- The invoice number or date fails a portal check: Validate uniqueness within the financial year and check that the date is neither in the future nor before GST registration, as stated in the GST Portal IFF guidance.

Can DocRaptor create an IRN for a GST invoice?
No. The applicable GST portal or IRP workflow obtains the IRN; DocRaptor renders the supplied document content.
Does DocRaptor default to A4?
No. Its documented default is US Letter, so set the page size explicitly if you need A4.
