You can keep prerecorded lessons live on YouTube by sending a continuous feed from an encoder to YouTube Live. To avoid black frames between lessons, first determine whether the gap is in the lesson files or playlist handoff—or whether the encoder connection is dropping. YouTube’s published guidance covers stream health and encoder settings, but it does not establish a specific OBS playlist setting that eliminates transition black frames.
Choose how to keep the stream running
YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder, which can be software running on a computer or standalone hardware. A local encoder gives you direct control over sources and transitions, but the computer, power, software and internet connection must remain available. A cloud service moves that work and its uptime dependency off your computer. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded streams; the listing does not establish YouTube ownership, endorsement or performance.
| Approach | What stays running | Control and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Local encoder | Your computer or hardware encoder, plus its internet connection. | You can inspect the encoder and configure sources and overlays directly. You are responsible for keeping the system and connection available. |
| Cloud service | A service handles the stream after you upload or configure content. | Reduces dependence on a computer at home, but introduces a service dependency. Specific costs and transition controls vary by provider. |
Prepare your YouTube stream and lesson files
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, start the live-streaming setup. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch.
- Choose an encoder. Install streaming software on a computer or use standalone hardware. YouTube’s setup flow is to connect the encoder using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, configure it, then start sending the feed. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Build and test the lesson sequence. Add the recordings in the intended order and check their playback and loop behavior. Play through the actual output—including lesson boundaries—before going live. The official sources do not prescribe a universal OBS playlist or transition recipe that guarantees gap-free playback.
- Check rights and channel suitability. Use recordings you have permission to stream, including any music, images and other material embedded in lessons. Copyright claims or other YouTube policy issues can affect a broadcast. Replaying material does not itself establish eligibility for monetization; review YouTube’s current channel policies before relying on revenue from a repeated stream.
Configure an encoder for YouTube
For RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the contribution feed in transit. The published settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. The bitrate figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 guidance, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection will remain stable.
| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Stereo audio: AAC or MP3 is supported over RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.
- SDR color: Use Rec. 709.
Select an output quality your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends running a speed test, testing with representative audio and video movement, and monitoring stream health and messages in Live Control Room. YouTube detects encoder settings and transcodes the received feed into formats for viewers.

Diagnose black frames without guessing
Black frames appear at lesson boundaries
If the stream connection looks healthy and the black interval happens precisely when one lesson ends and another begins, inspect the media files and the actual playlist output in a controlled test. Check whether a source reaches a blank frame at its end, whether the next source starts late, and how the playlist handles the handoff. These are diagnostic checks, not a verified OBS fix: the official OBS and YouTube pages cited here do not document a setting proven to prevent black frames at lesson transitions.
The stream drops frames or OBS shows a yellow or red connection indicator
OBS identifies a rising dropped-frames counter and a yellow or red connection indicator as signs that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the chosen bitrate. Test upload stability and reduce the configured bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. This points to a network or bitrate problem; it does not by itself explain a black interval that occurs only between lesson files.

YouTube reports an encoder configuration issue
Check Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and compare the encoder output with YouTube’s recommended settings above. For a more detailed status view, YouTube’s LiveStreams API defines health values including good, ok, bad and noData; its configuration issue list provides diagnostic details. noData means YouTube has no health information, not that the stream is confirmed healthy.
When HLS is relevant—and when it is not
HLS is another YouTube ingest option, aimed at high-quality or high-resolution streams where higher latency is acceptable. It is not a general-purpose remedy for black frames between prerecorded lessons. HLS requires HTTPS, a persistent connection, one encoded stream with muxed audio and video, HLS-compliant playlists and segments, and supported codecs: H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio. Closed GOP is required. Google’s HLS guidance recommends segments of one to four seconds and says they must not exceed five seconds. Because HLS is segment-based, it generally has higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC.
