You can keep a prerecorded algebra lesson live on YouTube from a Mac by sending it through an encoder such as OBS Studio and looping either one video or a playlist. Your YouTube channel must be eligible for live streaming, and the Mac, OBS, lesson files, and internet connection must remain available while the local stream runs. Test the setup before relying on it, and do not assume YouTube will preserve a complete replay of a 24-hour broadcast.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must have had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s current help page says streamers must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements before scheduling. [c_youtube_eligibility]
- A Mac with OBS Studio installed, the lesson video files stored somewhere OBS can access, and a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen stream quality.
- For a playlist of multiple lessons, VLC installed on the Mac so OBS can use its VLC Video source. OBS lists the source as available on macOS. [c_obs_playlist]
- Permission to broadcast the lesson video and all included audio. Do not use material you lack rights to broadcast.
A local encoder works only while it is sending the feed. This setup does not guarantee uninterrupted service: a Mac, network connection, OBS, or source file can fail. [c_youtube_encoder]
Create the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. [c_youtube_encoder]
- Copy the stream URL and private stream key shown for the event. Enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of screen recordings, lesson materials, screenshots, and public documents. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- For a scheduled event, start sending the encoder feed from OBS and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Click Go live there when the preview is ready. Starting OBS alone may not publish a scheduled event.
Set up OBS to loop lessons
Loop one lesson video
- In OBS, create or select a scene, then add a Media Source.
- Choose the local lesson video file and enable its Loop property. OBS describes this setting as replaying the file once playback has completed. [c_obs_playlist]
- Position and size the source in the canvas. Play it through and check that the equations and explanatory text are legible at normal phone playback size.
Loop several lessons as a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS’s VLC Video source will not appear without it. [c_obs_playlist]
- Add a VLC Video source in the scene and add the lesson files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then preview the transition from one file to the next. Confirm the playlist order, audio levels, and that each file is accessible on the Mac.
For either setup, watch OBS’s audio meters while the lesson plays and listen to the actual output. These checks help catch silent, clipped, or unexpectedly quiet audio before viewers encounter it. There is no single prescribed algebra-course canvas layout: choose one that keeps worked equations readable without cutting off important content. [c_obs_setup]
Choose settings and test the stream
Set the video canvas to match the lesson material and choose output quality the Mac and internet connection can sustain. YouTube recommends selecting quality suited to the connection, testing upload bitrate, using RTMPS, and watching stream-health messages. Its guidance does not prescribe a universal bitrate for every Mac, resolution, or connection, so use the current encoder recommendations shown in YouTube Studio rather than guessing. - In OBS streaming settings, use the YouTube-provided stream URL and private key; select RTMPS when configuring the server connection.
- Run a short test stream before the full course broadcast. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes before a first real stream. [c_obs_setup]
- Watch Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages. Check motion, equation readability, audio, and whether upload capacity remains adequate.
- If health warnings appear or the preview stutters, reduce output quality or bitrate to a level your connection can sustain, then test again.
Keep the Mac stream running
Once the test succeeds, keep the Mac awake, OBS open, the source files accessible, and the internet connection available for the whole broadcast. Prevent sleep or power-saving settings from stopping the Mac, and avoid moving or renaming lesson files while OBS is using them. A local encoder must continue sending content for the YouTube stream to remain live; there is no guarantee that a particular Mac or connection will stay up for 24 hours without interruption. End the broadcast—and plan for replay separately
To end a scheduled broadcast, end it in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder, following YouTube’s encoder workflow. [c_youtube_encoder]
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder instructions do not promise a complete automatic archive for a 24-hour session. If viewers must be able to replay every lesson, plan shorter broadcasts or make a separate local recording, and verify the archive that appears in Studio rather than treating a 24-hour stream as one guaranteed complete replay. Copyright and monetization considerations
Broadcast only lesson video and audio you have the rights to use. The fact that a lesson is educational or prerecorded does not by itself establish that every included clip, image, or music track can be rebroadcast. Review YouTube’s current rules and your licenses before putting a course on a continuous live feed.

The playlist source is missing
Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and add the VLC Video source. OBS requires VLC for that source to appear. [c_obs_playlist]
The lesson stops instead of repeating
For one file, check the Media Source’s Loop setting. For several files, check that the VLC playlist contains the intended files and that Loop Playlist is enabled. [c_obs_playlist]
The stream is unstable or reports poor health
Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and upload capacity. Test again at a lower quality or bitrate that suits the connection, and use RTMPS as YouTube recommends. [c_youtube_settings]

The stream stops when you leave the Mac
Confirm the Mac has not slept, OBS remains open and streaming, the source files remain accessible, and the internet connection is active. A local encoder cannot send the feed if the computer or connection stops. [c_youtube_encoder]
The 24-hour broadcast is missing a complete replay
A complete archive is not promised for a 24-hour session. YouTube’s cited automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; use shorter broadcasts or a separate local recording if complete lesson replay matters. [c_youtube_encoder]
