Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Schedule the YouTube event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room; use OBS as an encoder to send your podcast’s audio and video to that event. Scheduling an event is not the same as automatically repeating episodes or keeping a broadcast running unattended. YouTube documents the scheduling and encoder workflow, but whether your OBS setup can handle recurrence, failure recovery, and continuous operation depends on the current OBS version and any automation you use.
Live Control Room and OBS do different jobs
| Tool | Role | What you configure |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live Control Room | Creates and manages the YouTube live event. | Schedule the event, choose whether to reuse settings, and provide the encoder with the stream URL and key. |
| OBS | Encodes and sends the podcast’s media feed to YouTube. | Set up the audio and video sources and connect OBS to the YouTube event using its stream URL and key. |
YouTube’s encoder workflow starts in Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and use the Manage tab to schedule a stream, reuse settings from an earlier stream, or create a new one. The encoder sends the feed; YouTube says to wait for the preview and click Go live when ready. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guide for its workflow and controls.
Schedule a podcast episode with an encoder
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. It also states that streamers must be at least 16 years old. Review YouTube’s getting-started guidance for current requirements, which may change.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, go to Manage, and schedule a stream or create one. Scheduling can make an event appear as upcoming and allow viewers to opt into notifications; it does not by itself establish automatic recurrence for a series of episodes.
- Connect OBS to the event. Use the stream URL and stream key shown for the event in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes stream keys as the information that lets an encoder send a feed to the right destination and lets YouTube accept it. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it in Live Control Room if it is compromised. YouTube Help puts it this way: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.”
- Prepare and test the feed. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder well before the event, starting it ahead of the scheduled start, checking the Live Control Room preview, confirming the event is accessible, and monitoring audio and video quality. Check any local recording you intend to keep.
- Go live and monitor. When the preview is ready, use the Live Control Room’s Go live control as appropriate for your event setup. Keep an eye on stream health and the sound and picture throughout the broadcast.
What “continuously” means—and what it does not guarantee
A scheduled YouTube event is a way to announce and prepare a specific stream. YouTube’s documented scheduling options, encoder auto-start and auto-stop controls, and reuse of stream settings do not establish that OBS has a built-in recurring episode scheduler, will restart itself after a failure, or will run indefinitely without supervision. Check the current OBS documentation and the actual plugins or external automation in your setup before relying on those behaviors.
For a podcast series, decide separately how each episode’s event is created, how the encoder starts and stops, and what happens if the computer, network, OBS, or YouTube connection fails. Do not treat a single scheduled event as proof that future episodes will be scheduled or streamed automatically.

Archive planning for long broadcasts
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a continuous broadcast or any stream expected to exceed that duration, do not assume the same automatic archive behavior. Plan a separate recording or archive workflow and verify YouTube’s current behavior. Keep and check a local recording if you need a dependable copy of an episode.
Encoder quality and equipment
Choose settings your available upload connection can sustain, test before broadcasting, and monitor stream health. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, its table recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection will hold steady; test your actual setup. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates.

YouTube says encoders can support overlays and hardware such as preamps, microphones, and cameras, but its live-streaming tips also say expensive equipment is not required to get started. Scheduling itself does not require buying a particular microphone, interface, encoder appliance, or streaming computer. Use equipment appropriate to the audio and video quality you want to produce.
