DocRaptor and Puppeteer take different routes to PDF: DocRaptor accepts conversion requests through a hosted API and uses Prince, while Puppeteer creates PDFs from a page in a browser-automation workflow. Choose by testing your actual templates and deciding whether you want an external conversion service or to manage PDF generation within your application. The available documentation does not establish a universal winner for speed, reliability, fidelity, operating effort, or total cost.
How DocRaptor and Puppeteer generate PDFs
DocRaptor: a hosted conversion API
DocRaptor converts HTML, CSS, and JavaScript into PDF and other document formats through an API, using the Prince PDF engine. Your application sends a document request rather than calling Puppeteer’s page-level PDF method itself. Its API documentation describes both direct binary output and hosted or asynchronous response modes. See DocRaptor’s documentation and API reference for current request details.
DocRaptor’s tutorial says JavaScript is disabled by default; it can be enabled with an API parameter. If your HTML depends on scripts to populate content, treat that setting and the resulting rendered output as part of your implementation test. The applicable JavaScript engine depends on the selected pipeline, so check the live API reference rather than assuming one engine version applies indefinitely: DocRaptor JavaScript documentation.
Puppeteer: PDF output from browser automation
Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() method generates a PDF from a browser page. The method documentation says it “Generates a PDF of the page with the print CSS media type.” If you need screen media instead, change the page’s media type before calling the method. Print rendering may alter colors; Puppeteer’s documentation points to -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact colors are needed. See the Page.pdf() API documentation.

Choose based on your rendering and operating needs
Neither integration model guarantees that a particular page will render correctly. Run representative templates through the candidate approach, including the CSS and assets that matter to your output.
| Decision point | DocRaptor | Puppeteer |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering path | Hosted conversion API using Prince, according to DocRaptor’s documentation. | Browser automation with PDF generation through Page.pdf(). |
| Page layout controls | Documentation describes CSS-based styling and Prince-specific PDF options. Verify the exact options needed for your document. | PDF options include paper dimensions or format, orientation, margins, page ranges, backgrounds, scale, timeout, and whether CSS @page sizing takes priority. See the PDFOptions reference. |
| JavaScript | Disabled by default according to the tutorial; can be enabled through an API parameter. | Page content is rendered in the browser workflow. Test scripts and the point at which the page is ready to print. |
| External assets | Resource-download failures can affect generation when resource errors are configured to fail the request. The API reference discusses HTTP failures, DNS errors, timeouts, SSL problems, and rejected connections. | Test whether required images, fonts, and other resources have loaded before PDF generation. |
| Operational model | Your application calls an external conversion API. | Your application performs PDF generation through its Puppeteer browser-automation workflow. |
| Price and production limits | Current paid prices and usage limits are not established here. DocRaptor says test documents are free and watermarked; that does not establish a free production plan. | Not established by the cited PDF and options documentation; check current operating and commercial requirements for your deployment. |
When to lean toward Puppeteer
Puppeteer is a reasonable fit when PDF output belongs in a browser-automation workflow your team already operates and you want browser-level control. The documented PDF options give you specific controls to evaluate, but they do not guarantee parity with Prince’s output or a particular layout.

When to lean toward DocRaptor
DocRaptor is a reasonable fit when you prefer to integrate a hosted document-conversion API and its Prince-based rendering works for your templates. Confirm the current API behavior and commercial terms directly before committing.
Build a representative PDF test before choosing
- Pick real templates. Include the shortest and longest reports, complex tables, page breaks, headers or footers, and any layout that has caused problems.
- Test the page media and pagination. For Puppeteer, start with its default print media behavior and exercise relevant PDF options, including paper size, margins, page ranges, backgrounds, and CSS page sizing. For DocRaptor, validate the CSS and any Prince-specific options your design depends on.
- Check dynamic content and assets. Verify that scripts have run and the content is ready before capture. Test fonts, images, authenticated pages, and external resources; for DocRaptor, check how your configured resource-error behavior responds when an asset cannot be fetched.
- Compare the output against requirements. Inspect page breaks, colors, text, headers, footers, and missing content in the generated files. Do not assume that similar-looking options produce identical results across the two rendering paths.
- Evaluate operational ownership and current terms. Decide whether the API integration or browser workflow better fits your application, then verify current prices, limits, versions, and deployment requirements with the vendors’ current documentation.
Implementation details that commonly change the result
Print CSS, colors, and page dimensions
For Puppeteer, Page.pdf() uses print CSS by default. Set up print styles intentionally, and use -webkit-print-color-adjust where exact color handling is required. Its PDF options document paper format or dimensions, landscape orientation, margins, scale, backgrounds, page ranges, and the priority of CSS @page sizing. Check the current PDFOptions documentation for the precise option names and behavior.

DocRaptor’s documentation describes much PDF styling—including page size, headers, and footers—as CSS-driven, with some PDF-only controls specific to Prince. Confirm that the options and CSS you need are supported by the current API and the pipeline you use.
JavaScript timing and resource loading
For DocRaptor, JavaScript being disabled by default matters if the document is assembled or changed at runtime. Enable it when required and verify that the generated document contains the expected content. For either tool, explicitly check whether scripts, fonts, images, and protected pages are available to the renderer when it creates the PDF. DocRaptor’s API reference describes resource-download errors that can affect a request when configured to fail; inspect that behavior for your chosen error handling.

Version-sensitive behavior
DocRaptor maps pipeline versions to Prince and JavaScript-engine versions in its API reference. Those mappings are version-dependent, so use the current reference for the pipeline you select instead of treating an engine version as a timeless product fact. Puppeteer’s PDF option behavior should likewise be checked against the documentation for the version you deploy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting PDF generation
- Content rendered by JavaScript is missing in DocRaptor: JavaScript is disabled by default according to its tutorial. Enable it through the API parameter if the template requires it, then inspect the result with the pipeline you intend to use.
- A font, image, or stylesheet is missing: Confirm the asset URL is reachable by the renderer and that the response, DNS, TLS, and connection are valid. In DocRaptor, review the configured resource-error behavior; the API reference notes that download errors may fail generation when errors are set to fail the request.
- Colors differ in a Puppeteer PDF: Remember that
Page.pdf()renders print media by default. Review your print CSS and the documented-webkit-print-color-adjustguidance for exact colors. - Pages break or scale unexpectedly: Check paper dimensions, margins, scale, orientation, page ranges, and CSS
@pagesizing. Adjust one variable at a time and inspect the generated PDF. - A document works locally but not in production: Compare resource access and page readiness in both environments. Check authentication, external asset availability, script timing, and any differing rendering configuration; the cited product documentation does not establish a universal fix for environment-specific failures.
- You cannot tell whether API pricing fits: The documented free DocRaptor test documents are watermarked, not evidence of production usage at no cost. Confirm current paid pricing and limits directly with DocRaptor before estimating production cost.
