Normalize each finished podcast episode in an audio or video editor before sending it to YouTube: fix uneven dialogue, measure the episode’s integrated loudness, apply a consistent target-based adjustment, and control peaks only if needed. YouTube’s published guidance specifies encoding settings, not a podcast LUFS target or required normalization algorithm, so choose a repeatable target for your own series and verify it by listening.

What normalization does—and what it doesn’t

Loudness normalization adjusts a program’s perceived overall level toward a chosen target. Encoding settings such as codec, sample rate, and bitrate determine how audio is represented or transmitted; they do not normalize its volume.

A single gain adjustment cannot fix a quiet interview guest followed by a much louder host. Correct those internal level differences in your editor first, then normalize the finished episode as a whole. YouTube advises creators troubleshooting upload audio or video to edit the tracks in software before uploading: YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance.

How to normalize a podcast episode before streaming it

  1. Start with the finished mix. Edit dialogue, music, and other elements so speakers and sections are reasonably consistent. Address obvious jumps before whole-program normalization; otherwise a loud passage can dictate the overall adjustment while quieter parts remain hard to hear.
  2. Measure integrated loudness. Use a loudness meter or a suitable editor feature to measure the complete episode, rather than judging level from a single moment. Choose a workflow target appropriate to your show and keep it consistent across episodes. YouTube’s cited upload and live-stream documents do not establish a podcast LUFS target, including a required value such as −14 or −16 LUFS.
  3. Apply target-based normalization. Adjust the episode toward your chosen target. Compare it with recent episodes at a consistent listening level; a meter helps repeatability, but listening remains important for dialogue intelligibility and perceived consistency.
  4. Control peaks if necessary. If the gain adjustment leaves peaks that exceed what your delivery chain can handle, use a limiter carefully. Listen for distortion, pumping, or flattened transients. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify a mandatory true-peak ceiling.
  5. Export using settings suited to the delivery path. Keep upload-file guidance distinct from live-encoder guidance; see the settings below. Do not raise or lower loudness by changing bitrate.
  6. Review the rendered file. Listen to the opening, quiet sections, loudest passage, and episode joins. Check that the export itself has no clipping, missing audio, or abrupt level changes.
  7. Test the stream with representative content. Before the planned stream, include audio and video movement similar to the real program, then monitor audio quality and stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring the stream: live encoder settings and testing and YouTube live-streaming tips.

What LUFS should a podcast be for YouTube?

YouTube’s cited official upload and live-stream documents do not prescribe a podcast loudness target in LUFS, a normalization algorithm, or a true-peak ceiling. Do not treat a commonly repeated LUFS figure as a YouTube requirement on the basis of those documents. Instead, select a suitable target for your production workflow, document it, and apply it consistently while listening for level differences between episodes.

Does YouTube normalize podcast volume for live streams?

The cited YouTube guidance describes audio encoding, testing, and stream monitoring; it does not establish a podcast-specific loudness-normalization target or promise that a live stream will be normalized to one. Prepare and check the episode audio before it reaches the stream, and verify the result during a representative test.

Which audio settings should I use?

The recommended settings depend on whether you are preparing an upload file or sending audio through a live encoder. They describe encoding, not loudness.

Live encoder, stereo AAC or MP3 44.1 kHz 128 kbps YouTube Help: live encoder settings

Use the row that matches your route. A bitrate change affects encoded audio data, not the episode’s measured loudness; normalizing volume is a separate production step.

Common problems and fixes

  • One speaker is still much quieter. Whole-program normalization moves the episode’s overall level; it does not balance sections. Adjust the speaker or passage in the editor, then remeasure and export.
  • The normalized export sounds distorted or pumps. Check whether peaks are being pushed too hard or a limiter is working excessively. Back off the processing and listen again to the loudest passages.
  • Episodes measure similarly but do not sound equally loud. Meter readings do not replace listening. Compare episodes at the same playback level and inspect differences in dialogue, music, and dynamics; revise the mix where needed.
  • The stream sounds different from the export. Confirm the live encoder’s codec, sample rate, and bitrate against the live settings above, then test with representative audio and monitor the stream.
  • The join between looped episodes is jarring. Listen to the actual end-to-start transition, not just each file in isolation. Adjust fades or edit the boundary in the production workflow, then test that transition in the stream.

Can hardware optimize podcast loudness?

It is not necessary to buy a recorder to normalize an existing episode; software can perform the workflow. Zoom’s PodTrak P8 documentation says its file loudness can be analyzed and automatically optimized for podcasting: PodTrak P8 documentation. Treat that as an optional device feature, not a YouTube requirement. Headphones can help with listening checks, but YouTube does not mandate a model.
