Use ElementHandle.screenshot() to capture one element: Puppeteer scrolls it into view automatically by default, then takes the screenshot. In Puppeteer 25.12.0, you can also call element.scrollIntoView() first when your code needs an explicit scroll step.
Capture an element with one call
Wait for the target element, then call its screenshot() method. This example saves the element as target.png in the current working directory:

Scroll explicitly before capture
Automatic scrolling is enabled by default through ElementScreenshotOptions.scrollIntoView. If you want a separate scroll step—for example, to make the sequence clear in your code—call scrollIntoView() on the handle before taking the screenshot:

Choose element or page capture
- One element: use
element.screenshot()when the output should contain a specific DOM element. - A page: use
page.screenshot()when you want a page screenshot instead of an element-only image. The official screenshot guide covers both methods. - Full page or selected region: the screenshot APIs document options such as
fullPageandclipfor page capture geometry. These are not a substitute for selecting an element handle when the desired output is that element.
Set the output path and format
Pass a file name in the path option to save the image. Puppeteer resolves a relative path from the current working directory, and infers the image format from the file extension; for example, target.png produces a PNG file. Puppeteer screenshot options

Wait for a stable target
The element handle must still refer to an element attached to the DOM when Puppeteer captures it. The API documents that element screenshot capture throws if the element has been detached. Wait for the target and any application-specific state needed for the image before capturing; a selector appearing does not, by itself, establish that an application’s content or animation is finished. Troubleshoot common failures
- The selector does not find an element: verify the selector matches the page’s DOM and wait for it with
page.waitForSelector(). The example checks for a missing handle before callingscreenshot(). - The handle was detached: the page may have replaced or removed the element between selection and capture. Wait until the application reaches the needed state, then obtain a fresh handle and take the screenshot.
- The image is not the whole page:
element.screenshot()is for the selected element. Usepage.screenshot()for a page capture and its documented page geometry options when appropriate. - The file is not where expected: check the process’s current working directory; relative
pathvalues are resolved from there.
