If a DocRaptor PDF is missing images, first check whether the image URL resolves correctly and whether DocRaptor’s renderer can reach it. A browser preview may use a different URL base, filesystem, network access, credentials, or timing. DocRaptor can also finish generating a PDF while logging and ignoring resource-loading errors, so a successful job does not prove every image loaded.
Why are images missing from my DocRaptor PDF?
DocRaptor’s renderer must be able to find and fetch each external image. Its documentation puts the requirement plainly: “DocRaptor has to know where on the internet to find all of your external assets.” See DocRaptor’s image and asset troubleshooting guidance.
Start with the exact HTML and CSS sent to DocRaptor, not just the page as displayed in your browser. Check both <img src> values and CSS url(...) references. Common causes include an unresolved relative path, an asset on localhost or a private network, an access-controlled image host, a slow response, or JavaScript that has not finished creating the image when rendering ends.
Why do images show in my browser but not in the PDF?
A browser can load resources from your local machine, an authenticated session, or a network that DocRaptor’s rendering environment cannot access. The browser may also resolve a relative URL against the page’s current address, while DocRaptor receives HTML without the same address context. Check the final URL and the renderer’s access to it rather than treating browser visibility as proof that the PDF service can fetch it.

- Local or private resource:
localhost, a local file path, a VPN-only host, or a private IP is not publicly reachable as-is by DocRaptor. Its guidance says document and asset URLs must be publicly accessible on the internet. Development testing and localhost options - Different credentials or access rules: Browser cookies or login state are not automatically available to DocRaptor. Check HTTP authentication, IP filtering, and proxy rules.
- Different timing: A browser may wait for scripts or asynchronous work that your PDF generation request does not wait for.
How do I use relative image URLs with DocRaptor?
The most direct fix is to use a fully qualified https:// or http:// URL in the image or CSS. If the document intentionally uses relative paths, provide a base with the API’s prince_options[baseurl] parameter or an HTML <base href="..."> element in the head. DocRaptor documents both approaches in its API reference and file-system-access troubleshooting article.
| Reference form | What to verify |
|---|---|
Absolute URL, such as https://assets.example.com/images/photo.jpg |
The URL points to the intended image and is reachable by DocRaptor. |
Relative URL, such as ../images/photo.jpg |
A correct baseurl or HTML <base> is present. |
Root-relative URL, such as /images/photo.jpg |
It resolves from the domain root, which may not be the directory you expected. |
Protocol-relative URL, such as //assets.example.com/photo.jpg |
Confirm the resolved scheme and host; DocRaptor’s file-system-access guidance identifies protocol-less asset references without a base as a possible problem. |
Prefer an absolute URL when only a few resources need fixing: it makes the destination explicit beside each reference. Use a base URL when preserving many relative references is more practical. In either case, inspect the final resolved address, especially for root-relative paths.

Can DocRaptor load images from localhost?
Not from your development machine’s localhost address as-is: that address refers to the machine making the request, not a publicly reachable server for DocRaptor’s renderer. DocRaptor documents several development approaches in its localhost testing guidance.
- Submit HTML as
document_content: This avoids requiring DocRaptor to fetch the HTML document itself. It does not make separately linked image URLs reachable. - Temporarily expose the development server through a tunnel: This can make the page and its assets reachable during testing. Remove or secure temporary exposure when it is no longer needed.
- Embed image data as Base64: This removes the separate network fetch for that image, but puts its data into the HTML payload. It is useful when the image is local or a separate request is the failure point.
Remote image URLs keep the HTML smaller but depend on a reachable host and a successful fetch. Base64 avoids that separate fetch but increases the HTML payload. Choose based on where the asset lives and how the document is submitted.

How can I see image-loading errors in DocRaptor?
Open the generated document’s log and inspect its Details view for conversion steps and resource problems. DocRaptor’s default behavior is to log and ignore resource errors, so the PDF job can succeed even when an image request fails. Its resource-error guidance explains how to stop ignoring them.
- Find the document log for the generated PDF.
- Open Details and look for failures associated with the missing image, such as a 404, DNS or connection error, TLS/SSL issue, MIME-type problem, or timeout.
- For stronger detection in application workflows, set
ignore_resource_errorstofalse. Documented resource failures can then cause the generation request to fail instead of silently leaving an incomplete PDF. - Fix the underlying URL, reachability, access, or timing problem and generate the PDF again.
The API reference says external-resource requests wait up to 10 seconds by default and documents an HTTP timeout setting from 1 to 60 seconds. A longer timeout may help when an asset is slow but reachable; it will not repair an invalid URL, an inaccessible host, or a rejected request. DocRaptor API reference

What if the image host requires authentication?
If the image server uses HTTP Basic Authentication, DocRaptor’s API reference documents prince_options[http_user] and prince_options[http_password]. Configure the credentials for the rendering request and confirm that the host permits the renderer’s request path. Do not assume browser cookies, a logged-in session, or VPN access will accompany the request.
Do I need to enable JavaScript for images in a DocRaptor PDF?
Only when the document depends on JavaScript to create the image element, choose its URL, or finish an asynchronous request. JavaScript is disabled by default, and DocRaptor documents separate standard and Prince JavaScript engine options. Enable the relevant engine and ensure rendering waits until the work is complete; DocRaptor notes that Prince is not a browser and may not support every browser JavaScript behavior. For a static image with a broken URL, enabling JavaScript is not a general fix. DocRaptor JavaScript execution documentation

How can I isolate a missing-image cause?
Use one known image in a minimal document and reference it with an absolute URL. Then compare that output with a version using the same image embedded as Base64. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee about any particular failure.
- If the embedded image appears but the remote one does not, investigate URL resolution, network reachability, access controls, the server response, or the timeout.
- If neither version appears, check the submitted HTML and CSS, image markup, and conversion log.
- If a static image works but a generated one does not, investigate JavaScript enablement and completion timing.
When should I contact DocRaptor support?
If the log does not make the failure clear, DocRaptor’s Help Request process shares the input HTML, output document, and generation log with its support team. Review those materials for confidential content before submitting them. Requesting help with your document
