To loop a church’s recorded Advent readings on YouTube Live, play the recording through OBS Studio, enable Loop on its Media Source, then send OBS to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. For several recordings, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. Test the complete setup before the service, and confirm that the church has permission to stream every reading and any music.
Before you begin
- YouTube eligibility: The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the Advent event. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- Equipment: You need a computer with OBS Studio, the recording file or files, and a working upload connection. You do not need a camera, capture card, microphone, or hardware encoder to broadcast an existing recording.
- For a playlist: Install VLC if you plan to use OBS’s VLC Video source; OBS only makes that source available when VLC is installed.
- Rights: Check the permissions for the readings, translations, and music before streaming. Permission to use a work in a church service does not necessarily include permission to broadcast it online.
Choose how to repeat the recordings
| What you want to play | OBS source | Repeat setting | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| One recording, repeated | Media Source | Turn on Loop in the source properties. | Best when the same video should replay as soon as it ends. |
| Several readings in sequence | VLC Video | Turn on Loop Playlist. | VLC must be installed. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default; check both settings so the readings play in the intended order. |
OBS Media Sources can play common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation for the source controls.
Set up a single recording in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene you intend to use for the broadcast, or create a scene for the Advent readings.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source, give it a recognizable name, and confirm.
- In the source properties, select the local recording file. Turn on Loop so OBS starts the file again after playback completes. The OBS Project defines this setting as controlling whether the file replays when it finishes.
- Check the preview. Confirm that the video is visible, the audio meter responds, and the image fits the canvas as intended. If needed, adjust the source within the scene before going live.
- Keep the scene and media source active for the broadcast. Test that the file restarts at its end rather than stopping or leaving a blank image.
Set up several readings as a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed, then restart OBS if it was open during installation.
- In OBS, choose the Advent broadcast scene. Under Sources, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Add the reading files to the source playlist in the intended order. Review filenames and ordering carefully; a misplaced item can disrupt the service sequence.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the complete set should repeat. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable sequence. Check these controls rather than assuming their defaults have not changed.
- Preview the playlist from beginning to end, including the transition between files and the return to the first reading. Confirm that the audio and video are acceptable for each item.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover this workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the credentials. If using a custom connection, enter the URL and key in their respective fields.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it publicly or include it in a visible screenshot. Reset it in YouTube Studio if you believe it has been exposed.
- In OBS, start streaming. Return to YouTube’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming signal and preview. Check the preview before beginning the public broadcast, then start the event as appropriate in YouTube Studio.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Use the stream URL and key for the encoder stream you selected, and follow YouTube’s live stream settings guidance for the current stream controls.
Test timing, bandwidth, and the archive
Prepare early
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use that time to confirm the stream reaches the channel and can be watched on mobile devices, inspect audio and video, and check stream health. Its live streaming tips include preparation and monitoring guidance.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Check upload capacity
Measure the available upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving around 20% of upload bandwidth available above the total stream bitrate. Other devices or users sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the streaming computer. YouTube’s streaming tips explain bandwidth and connection considerations.
Plan for recordings longer than 12 hours
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the continuous broadcast may run longer, do not assume the same archive behavior: confirm YouTube’s current handling or schedule a shorter session. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Check permissions and YouTube copyright risks
The church is responsible for securing the rights needed for everything included in the live stream. This can include the recorded reading, the translation, background or opening music, and other third-party material. YouTube scans live broadcasts for matches; depending on the issue, it may replace the live image with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, or apply a strike. Even a licensed work may require its rights holder to add the church channel to a Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and livestream terms and conditions.
Which permissions apply depends on the church’s location and the specific works and licenses involved. Those details cannot be determined without reviewing the church’s materials and agreements; confirm them with the relevant rights holders or licensing organization before broadcasting.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS does not show the video | The source may not point to the correct file, or the format may not be supported by the current setup. | Open the source properties, verify the selected file and check that it is one of the common formats OBS documents, such as MP4 or MOV. Reopen the preview after correcting the path. |
| The recording stops instead of repeating | Loop is off for a Media Source, or Loop Playlist is off for VLC Video. | Open the relevant source properties and enable the appropriate repeat control. Test playback through the end of the file or playlist. |
| The readings play in the wrong order | The playlist order is incorrect or shuffle is enabled. | Reorder the VLC Video playlist and ensure Shuffle Playlist is off. Preview the sequence again. |
| YouTube receives no signal | The encoder is not streaming, or the stream URL or key does not match the selected YouTube stream. | Check OBS’s stream settings against the selected encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private; if it may be compromised, reset it and update OBS. |
| Playback is unstable or stream health suffers | Available upload bandwidth may be insufficient or shared with other traffic. | Check outbound capacity and leave the recommended upload headroom. Reduce competing network use and monitor YouTube’s stream health. |
| The live image is replaced or the stream is interrupted | A copyright match or rights issue may have been detected. | Review the stream’s notices and the rights for each reading, translation, and music item. Resolve permissions with the relevant rights holder; a license may also require channel allowlisting. |
