Set FFmpeg’s video bitrate from the upload speed your church connection can sustain during service—not its advertised download speed. For YouTube’s current H.264 live guidance, a practical starting point is 3 Mbps at 360p30, 5 Mbps at 480p30, 8 Mbps at 720p30, or 10 Mbps at 1080p30. Count audio and leave at least 20% upload headroom beyond the complete stream bitrate; if the connection cannot reliably provide that margin, reduce resolution and bitrate.
Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain
Download speed does not determine whether your stream can reach YouTube. Measure upload speed on the actual connection, preferably during the hours your church normally broadcasts. YouTube says to leave 20% room in available upload bandwidth for streaming. Its bitrate figures below are video targets; audio and transport overhead add to the total.
The figures are Google / YouTube Help recommendations for H.264 live ingestion, on pages checked in 2026. They are guidance, not measurements of an Indian ISP or a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
| YouTube output | Recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 360p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
Choose the lowest resolution that keeps the service readable. A mostly stationary pulpit may remain clear at a lower setting, while moving cameras, distant faces, lyrics, or signs can need more detail. Check the picture on a phone or other device a viewer might use, and test representative movement before the service. The sustained upload rate during the service window matters more than a brief best-case speed test.

Example: 360p30 with audio
A 3 Mbps video target plus 128 kbps audio is about 3.13 Mbps before transport overhead. Applying YouTube’s 20% room guidance gives roughly 3.76 Mbps of sustained available upload just for this stream. This is arithmetic based on the target bitrates, not a published measurement or guarantee. Allow more if other people or devices use the connection or the upload rate varies.
Configure FFmpeg for YouTube live ingestion
YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies H.264 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval. The following example uses the widely available libx264 encoder, a 3 Mbps video target, and 128 kbps AAC audio. It assumes input.mp4 is a file to be played in real time; replace the ingest URL and key with the values for your YouTube stream.

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
- Check your FFmpeg build. Confirm the selected encoder and protocol are available. For encoder-specific options, run
ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264, or substitute the encoder name you use. - Set the video target.
-b:vis video bitrate in bits per second;3000kis 3 Mbps. The-maxrateand-bufsizeoptions constrain peaks for this libx264 configuration. Rate-control flags can behave differently with other encoders. - Match frame rate and keyframes. At 30 fps,
-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP (two seconds);-keyint_min 60and-sc_threshold 0keep the interval consistent in this example. - Set the audio target. The example uses AAC at 128 kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Count the audio bitrate when checking whether your connection has enough capacity.
- Protect the stream key. Use the ingest address and stream key shown by YouTube for the stream, and do not share or publish the key.
- Use real-time input correctly.
-repaces a file input in real time. FFmpeg documentation cautions against imposing a low read rate on an actual capture device or live input, as it can cause packet loss. - Set output dimensions intentionally. The example does not scale the input. If you need a specific output resolution, add an appropriate scale filter rather than assuming that bitrate alone changes dimensions.
For 480p30, a corresponding example target is -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k. For 720p30, use 8000k and 16000k respectively. Set the intended output dimensions with an appropriate scale filter in either case. These are illustrative settings based on YouTube’s recommendations, not tested results for your network.
See FFmpeg’s ffmpeg documentation and ffmpeg-all documentation for option details. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and streaming tips are the relevant platform references; YouTube can update its guidance.

Tell connection speed apart from a data cap
A low upload speed can cause buffering or disconnections; a monthly data allowance is a separate limit. As a decimal-unit estimate, 1 Mbps sustained for 24 hours uses about 10.8 GB before overhead. Multiply that by the stream’s total bitrate in Mbps and the number of hours streamed to estimate consumption. Check your own provider’s current monthly allowance, fair-use rules, and continuous-use terms: the available information does not establish a particular church plan or India-wide data limit.
Test before the service and troubleshoot by symptom
- Measure sustained upload on the streaming connection at the usual service time, and check whether other devices are using it.
- Run a private or unlisted test with the actual camera or video, audio, resolution, bitrate, and stream key setup.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and listen for clean, synchronized audio. Test movement and read important text from a viewer’s device.
- If the connection is unstable, reduce resolution and video bitrate, then test again. Do not raise the target bitrate to compensate for insufficient upload.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Stream buffers, drops, or shows poor health | Available upload is insufficient or fluctuating; another device may be consuming bandwidth. | Recheck upload during service hours, reduce resolution and bitrate, limit competing uploads, and test again with headroom. |
| Picture is stable but faces or lyrics are hard to see | Output resolution or detail is too low for the camera framing and scene. | Test a higher resolution only if upload can sustain its recommended bitrate plus audio and margin; otherwise improve framing or accept the lower detail. |
| Unexpected packet loss with a capture device | -re may be imposing an unsuitable read rate on a live input. |
Use real-time pacing for file playback, not an actual capture device or live input. |
| FFmpeg rejects an option or cannot open the output | The installed build may lack the selected encoder or protocol, or the ingest address/key may be wrong. | Check the encoder help and build support, then verify the current YouTube ingest details and keep the key private. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded recordings rather than a live camera service, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining a streaming computer at church. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Visit StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
