Choose OBS Studio if your church needs a visual, volunteer-friendly production workflow; choose FFmpeg if an operator can maintain command-line settings and wants a fixed prerecorded input loop. Neither is proven more reliable for nonstop streaming. Both still depend on the computer, network, correct YouTube ingest settings, monitoring, and a recovery plan.
OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your church?

This is a workflow recommendation, not a reliability ranking: there is no head-to-head uptime test establishing a winner. A local OBS or FFmpeg setup needs a computer capable of running the selected encoder workload; no minimum specification is established. Test your actual file, audio, motion, duration, and network before relying on either approach.
Prepare the YouTube broadcast
- Enable live streaming and prepare the event. Confirm the channel can stream live and create or select the intended live event in YouTube.
- Get the ingest details. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, select YouTube in the encoder when available, or copy the server URL. Enter the event’s stream key in the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a shared command or screenshot.
- Choose OBS or FFmpeg. Use OBS if the team needs a graphical service workflow; use FFmpeg if the operator can configure and maintain the command-line workflow.
- Set the ingest protocol and output. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. Follow the encoder’s controls and current YouTube guidance rather than assuming a single setting works for every configuration.
- Match video settings to your source and connection. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 video at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 or 6 Mbps for 720p60. These are published recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. YouTube advises choosing quality that is reliable on the available connection and running a speed test to check upload bitrate.
- Configure audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo. Check that the prerecorded service actually has sound, that it is routed to the stream, and that levels remain suitable throughout playback.
Set up the prerecorded loop
In OBS Studio
OBS provides a graphical workflow for selecting a streaming service or custom server, entering a stream key, and adjusting streaming bitrate and audio bitrate. Configure the prerecorded video as the intended source and verify its repeat behavior in your actual scene and source setup; do not assume that selecting OBS automatically creates a continuous playlist. If the stream includes multiple scenes or sources, confirm that the correct one remains active during the full test.
In FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s official documentation defines -stream_loop as an input option: -stream_loop -1 repeats that input indefinitely. The loop flag addresses input repetition, not YouTube reconnection, stream scheduling, or seamless audio/video at the file boundary. Confirm the input file’s duration and encoding, output protocol and settings, and whether the transition back to the beginning behaves acceptably. RTMPS is RTMP over a secure SSL connection, but the exact command must match your file, installed FFmpeg build, and YouTube event details; validate it on the church’s setup rather than relying on a generic command.

Test, monitor, and plan for long broadcasts
- Test with representative material. YouTube recommends testing before going live. Use the actual video, with sound and movement similar to the intended broadcast, and let it cross a loop boundary.
- Check available upload capacity. Run a speed test and ensure the selected video bitrate is sustainable for the connection. Leave practical headroom for network variation rather than treating the recommended bitrate as an internet-speed guarantee.
- Watch stream health. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health status and messages during the test and broadcast. Arrange for a person to respond or write down a recovery procedure; neither infinite file looping nor encoder settings prove recovery after a failure.
- Plan around YouTube’s archive threshold. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its consulted guidance does not promise that a longer continuous broadcast will be archived in full. If you need a complete archive, plan broadcast boundaries and/or an independent recording before crossing that threshold.
Common problems and what to check

Copyright and reused-content checks
A church’s permission to show a recording in a service does not automatically establish that it may be streamed on YouTube. Before scheduling prerecorded music, sermons, images, or other material, confirm the church has the rights needed for online live transmission and any resulting archive. Consider both copyright claims and YouTube’s reused-content rules when deciding whether the channel and its content are appropriate for monetization. Do not treat a stream key or a successful technical test as permission to broadcast.
