Use the Indian Rupee Sign, ₹ (Unicode U+20B9), in your test fixture, then confirm the browser can render its glyph and generate and compare screenshot baselines in a consistent environment. The character is not the older U+20A8 RUPEE SIGN.
Put U+20B9 in the test fixture
In JavaScript or TypeScript, use the literal symbol or a Unicode escape. Both represent the same character:
const amountWithSymbol = '₹1,234.56';
const amountWithEscape = 'u20B91,234.56';
In HTML, use either the literal character or its numeric character reference:
<span>₹1,234.56</span>
<span>₹1,234.56</span>
These representations address character identity, not font support. The browser still needs an available font that contains a suitable U+20B9 glyph, so inspect the rendered page rather than assuming that correct source text guarantees the expected appearance.

Capture and compare it with Playwright Test
For an isolated check, assert on the element containing the amount. This runnable Playwright Test example writes a baseline on its first run and compares later runs against it:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('renders the Indian rupee symbol', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setContent('<span>₹1,234.56</span>');
await expect(page.locator('span')).toHaveScreenshot('rupee-amount.png');
});
toHaveScreenshot() is a Playwright Test assertion. Use a locator assertion when the glyph itself is the focus; capture the page or a larger component when spacing, alignment, or surrounding layout is also part of the test. Playwright waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing them. That settling behavior helps make a capture stable within a run, but it does not make screenshots from different machines or browser environments identical.

Keep the baseline environment consistent
Playwright documents that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other conditions. Fonts matter especially for a glyph-rendering test. Generate and compare baselines with the same operating system, browser project and version, and font setup—ideally by running both locally and in CI using the same environment.
- Character identity: verify the text is U+20B9, not U+20A8 or a visually similar substitute.
- Source representation: a literal
₹, JavaScript escapeu20B9, and HTML reference₹express the intended code point. - Glyph availability: confirm the test browser actually displays the symbol. A missing-glyph box indicates a font or rendering issue, not necessarily an incorrect source escape.
- Snapshot environment: align the host and browser conditions, including fonts, between baseline generation and comparison.
Pinning or bundling a font may improve repeatability, but there is no universally safe font established here; verify U+20B9 coverage in the font and browser environment your project uses.

Troubleshoot a wrong or unstable screenshot
The screenshot shows a box or unexpected mark
- Inspect the DOM text and verify it contains U+20B9. Do not rely on how a similar-looking character appears in source.
- Check font availability and glyph coverage in the browser environment used by the test.
- Run the test with the same font setup as the baseline. If you change fonts, regenerate and review the baseline rather than treating the change as a harmless pixel mismatch.
The screenshot differs across local and CI runs
First align the operating system, browser project and version, and fonts. A more permissive pixel threshold can conceal differences; it does not fix a missing or changed glyph. Use threshold options only when the remaining variation is acceptable for the test’s purpose.
The whole-page assertion is noisy
If the question is only whether the rupee glyph renders correctly, capture the amount element with a locator screenshot assertion. If the amount’s position or its relationship to other interface elements matters, assert on the containing component or page instead.

You need a screenshot-only style override
Playwright screenshot assertions support stylesheet options. Use an override only when a deterministic test-specific style is necessary, and make sure it does not replace or mask the font behavior the test is supposed to verify.

For a website screenshot outside your Playwright visual test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot API. For example, this cURL request captures a web page; it does not replace Playwright’s baseline assertion:

Does Playwright’s screenshot assertion guarantee the same rupee glyph on every operating system?
No. It stabilizes capture within a run, but rendering can vary between host and browser environments.
