If Playwright screenshot tests fail on Windows, first check whether the baseline was created in the same rendering environment as the test run. Then verify that Playwright and its browser binaries match, make the page state deterministic, and inspect the expected, actual, and diff images before changing a baseline or tolerance.
Why Playwright screenshots can differ on Windows
A screenshot comparison is sensitive to more than the page’s HTML and CSS. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Its Visual comparisons documentation states: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.”
That means a baseline generated on Linux or macOS is not necessarily a valid pixel-for-pixel reference for a Windows run. Use the same environment for generating and comparing snapshots, or maintain separate, reviewed baselines for separate platforms or Playwright projects.
Fix the environment and browser setup first
Match baseline generation to the Windows test environment
Generate or update the Windows baseline using the Windows browser environment that runs the comparison. Keep the browser mode, project settings, viewport, and other relevant capture settings consistent. If CI is the canonical comparison environment, generate the baseline there or in a matching setup rather than accepting a local image produced under different conditions.

Reinstall browser binaries after updating Playwright
Playwright packages are paired with specific browser binaries. After upgrading Playwright, install the browsers again using the command appropriate to your project:
npx playwright installinstalls the browsers for a JavaScript project.npx playwright install chromiuminstalls Chromium if that is the browser your project uses.
See the official browser installation documentation for package alignment and install options. On Windows, the default browser cache is %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalms-playwright. If the browser will not launch, confirm that the required browser is installed for the current Playwright package before investigating screenshot pixels.

Make the page deterministic before capture
Wait for the UI state you intend to test
Asynchronous content, late-loading images, animations, rotating content, timestamps, and randomized values can make captures unstable. Prefer retrying, web-first assertions for the condition that matters over a fixed sleep or an immediate, non-retrying check. Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() also waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before it compares the result; it does not eliminate every source of variation. See Writing tests and the PageAssertions API.
Set capture dimensions and scale consistently
Use explicit viewport and screenshot scale settings when they affect the expected image, and keep them the same when generating and comparing baselines. Differences in viewport size, device scale, or project configuration can change wrapping, layout, and pixel dimensions even when the page content is otherwise the same.

Mask or style only intentionally variable content
For content that is genuinely outside the test’s concern, use the screenshot assertion’s masking or stylesheet options deliberately. Keep masks narrow and targeted: hiding a large region can conceal a real visual regression. Review what changed before relaxing a pixel threshold; a tolerance is a comparison policy, not an explanation for the difference.
Inspect the failure before updating a snapshot
- Open the Playwright HTML report and locate the failed screenshot assertion.
- Compare the expected, actual, and diff images to see where and how the output changed.
- Open the test trace and review its action timeline, DOM snapshots, logs, network activity, and screenshots.
- Decide whether the difference is an intended UI change, an environment mismatch, or unstable page state.
- Update the snapshot only when the change is intended and the new image was generated in the canonical environment.
The Trace Viewer documents the evidence available in a trace; Best Practices covers debugging failures and keeping visual environments consistent. A retry can reveal intermittency: Playwright labels a test that fails and then passes on retry as flaky. That label is evidence of inconsistency, not a diagnosis. Use the trace to find and remove the underlying instability; see Retries.

Windows CI: distinguish launch failures from visual mismatches
Playwright’s Continuous Integration guide says Windows and macOS agents need no additional configuration beyond installing Playwright and running tests. Browser binaries still need to be installed, and screenshot comparisons still depend on comparable baselines.
- The browser does not launch: check that the browser binary is installed for the project’s Playwright version. For browser launch debugging, the CI guide documents
DEBUG=pw:browser; set the environment variable using the syntax for your shell. - The test launches but the screenshot differs: compare the baseline and test environments, then inspect the page state and image diff.
A quick diagnostic checklist
- Environment: Are the operating system, browser version, headless or headed mode, machine settings, and baseline-generation setup aligned?
- Browser binaries: Were browsers installed again after the Playwright package changed? Is the expected browser present in the Windows cache?
- Capture state: Is the UI ready, and are animations or volatile content affecting the capture? Are viewport and screenshot settings consistent?
- Failure evidence: What do the expected, actual, and diff images show? Do the trace, DOM snapshots, logs, or network activity point to a timing or loading problem?
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is to capture a website rather than test your application’s rendering, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents.
Install the requests package with python -m pip install requests, then run this Python example, replacing the target URL and API key:
