For a small, one-off screenshot script, Puppeteer’s official example is marginally more direct: launch a browser, open a page, navigate, save the screenshot, and close the browser. Playwright’s basic screenshot call is just as direct, but Playwright is easier to extend into visual regression tests because Playwright Test includes screenshot baselines and comparison assertions. Neither tool is objectively easier or faster for every project; the right choice depends on whether you need a file or a repeatable test workflow.

Which tool is easier depends on the screenshot job

  • One-off screenshot script: Puppeteer’s guide presents a straightforward start-to-finish sequence. Playwright’s core capture call is also short.
  • Visual regression testing: Playwright has the more integrated workflow: Playwright Test can create reference images and compare later runs with toHaveScreenshot().
  • Existing project: If the project already uses one tool, staying with its conventions is often simpler than adding or migrating browser automation solely for screenshots.

Official documentation does not establish a universal ease-of-use winner or a comparative performance ranking. Browser support, setup conventions, and whether you need screenshot comparisons matter more than the number of lines in a minimal example.

Take a basic screenshot with either tool

Puppeteer: launch, capture, and close

The Puppeteer screenshot guide shows a page capture with Page.screenshot(). Its end-to-end pattern is a good fit for a small script that needs to save an image:

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

See the official Puppeteer screenshot guide for the documented page and element capture APIs. Use a finally block in a standalone script so the browser closes if navigation or capture throws an error.

Playwright: capture from a page

Playwright’s basic page capture is similarly direct:

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Playwright documents page screenshots, full-page images, buffers, and locator screenshots in its screenshot documentation. The code above uses the page API for a simple file output; choose the locator API when the target is a particular element rather than the page.

Capture a full page or a specific element

Both libraries document page and element capture. Playwright’s guide also demonstrates capturing a full page and returning image bytes in memory, which is useful when the next step is uploading or processing the image instead of writing it to disk. Puppeteer’s element screenshot documentation notes that it attempts to scroll a hidden element into view before capturing it.

For Playwright, the documented page options include image format, clipping, and quality; full-page capture can be requested with fullPage, while a locator can take its own screenshot:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });

const imageBytes = await page.screenshot();

await page.locator('main article').screenshot({ path: 'article.png' });

Use the equivalent page or element method in Puppeteer when that is the project’s chosen library. Before relying on a captured image in a test, make sure the page has reached the state you intend to compare; screenshot capture does not by itself define which content or loading state your test considers correct.

Use Playwright for maintained visual baselines

For visual regression testing, Playwright Test provides more than an image-writing call. On an initial run, a screenshot assertion generates a reference screenshot; later runs compare output against that baseline. The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before it compares them, which helps avoid capturing while rendering is still changing.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('home page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});

This assertion belongs to the Playwright test runner, not just the core browser API. The Playwright visual comparisons guide explains baseline generation and comparisons. If the test runs against multiple browsers or platforms, separate baselines may be needed for those environments.

Install browsers and keep screenshot environments consistent

Playwright’s release notes recommend the @playwright/test package and downloading browsers with npx playwright install. Its CI example installs dependencies and then runs npx playwright install --with-deps after npm ci. Consult the Playwright release notes and your project’s setup instructions for the current installation requirements.

Visual baselines are sensitive to the environment. Playwright warns that browser rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Keep baseline creation and comparison runs aligned: use the same browser and version, operating system image, settings, and CI configuration where possible. If environments intentionally differ, maintain baselines for each rather than treating expected rendering differences as application regressions.

Choose based on workflow, not a claimed speed ranking

  • Choose Puppeteer for a compact capture script when its browser support and existing project setup fit.
  • Choose Playwright when screenshots are part of a test suite and you want built-in baseline generation and comparison assertions.
  • For a single screenshot file, both expose a direct page capture API. Compare the project’s browser requirements, setup practices, and need for element or full-page capture before migrating.

The Puppeteer screenshot guide showed version 25.12.0 when checked on October 3, 2026; version metadata is not a measure of ease or performance. The available official materials do not provide a comparative benchmark for either.

Or skip the browser setup

If you only need a screenshot returned from a URL, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request alternative to managing a browser locally. It can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and its API also supports full-page and element captures.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Common setup and comparison problems

Playwright cannot find its browser

Install the browser binaries for the Playwright version used by the project. In CI, follow the project’s dependency installation step with the documented browser install command; the release notes show npx playwright install --with-deps in a CI example.

Visual assertions fail only on another machine

Check the operating system, browser version, settings, headless mode, and other rendering conditions before treating the difference as a product bug. Align environments or keep platform-specific baselines.

An element screenshot misses content

Confirm that the selector identifies the intended element and that its content is ready. Puppeteer documents that element capture attempts to scroll a hidden element into view; still verify that the resulting image matches the intended state.

A capture is blank or incomplete

Check that navigation completed and that the page reached the state your script expects before taking the screenshot. For images or content that load later, wait for the relevant page condition or element, then capture. A screenshot API call only captures what the browser has rendered at that point.
