For a simple live-video origin, AWS recommends Amazon S3; for workflows that need DRM or ad insertion, cross-region failover, or specific low-latency requirements, consider AWS Elemental MediaPackage. The right replacement depends on whether you need object storage, just-in-time packaging, or both—not on a one-for-one product match.
When did AWS Elemental MediaStore end support?
The shutdown deadline has passed. AWS lists November 12, 2025 as MediaStore’s end-of-support date in its General Reference table. In its discontinuation announcement, AWS said customers could use the service until November 13, 2025, and that service capabilities would no longer be available after that date. These are AWS’s two published date formulations: the General Reference labels November 12 as the end-of-support date, while the announcement identifies November 13 as the final day of normal use.
Do not plan a new or continuing workflow around MediaStore. AWS’s announcement advised customers who had not retrieved data before the deadline to contact AWS Support through their AWS account; it does not promise that post-shutdown data retrieval will be possible.
Which MediaStore replacement should you choose?

Use S3 for a straightforward origin
AWS recommends Amazon S3 for simple live-video streaming workflows. An origin stores or serves the media objects used in delivery; it is not automatically a substitute for every packaging, protection, or failover function in a larger streaming chain. AWS cited S3’s strong read-after-write consistency, implemented in 2020, and improved tail-latency performance as reasons S3 had become more suitable for live-video origination. These are AWS’s statements, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for a particular workload.

AWS also described S3 as a lower-cost option for live-video origination than MediaStore, but did not publish a quantified saving or the workload assumptions behind that comparison. Build your own cost estimate around request volume, storage, data transfer, packaging, and delivery rather than applying an assumed percentage.
Use MediaPackage when the workflow needs packaging or advanced delivery behavior
MediaPackage is the direction to evaluate when DRM or ad insertion requires repackaging, or when the workflow requires cross-region failover or specific low-latency capabilities. MediaStore could be simpler in workflows that did not need repackaging, as AWS’s MediaLive guidance described, but that comparison is about workflow function—not current MediaStore availability.

S3 and MediaPackage do different jobs. S3 is object storage that can serve as an origin; MediaPackage provides media packaging capabilities. Some architectures may use storage and packaging together. Map the required inputs, outputs, playback formats, protection, ad workflow, latency target, and recovery behavior before choosing a destination.
How to handle MediaStore data after shutdown
Separate live-origin objects from persistent data
Not every object once present in a live origin was intended to be retained. AWS noted that live-origin data is often temporary: an encoder may delete objects after a configured interval, or a lifecycle policy may remove them. First identify which objects were persistent business data and which were disposable live workflow artifacts.

Copy retained objects only if access is available
AWS’s discontinuation announcement described using MediaStore List and Get APIs to copy persistent data to another storage target, such as S3. That describes the announced migration approach before the deadline; it is not evidence that those APIs remain available now. If you cannot retrieve the objects, contact AWS Support through your account. Do not assume recovery is guaranteed.
Plan MediaPackage version migration separately
A move from MediaStore and a move between MediaPackage generations are separate migration questions. MediaPackage v2 uses distinct resource identifiers from v1, and its user guide says there is no automated process to migrate v1 resources to v2. Do not treat a MediaStore replacement as an automatic conversion of existing MediaPackage resources; inventory and recreate the resources and integrations required by your target architecture.

What a complex migration can—and cannot—tell you
AWS’s June 29, 2026 case study describes broadcaster 5 moving from a dual-pipeline arrangement to MediaPackage v2, including workflow-specific capabilities such as DVB-DASH and accessibility signaling. It is an example of a complex broadcaster migration, not a universal recipe for former MediaStore users. Your player support, output formats, accessibility requirements, redundancy design, and packaging needs determine whether a similar architecture fits.
Migration checklist
- Inventory the old workflow: document encoders, origin behavior, object retention rules, delivery paths, output formats, DRM, ads, latency targets, and failover expectations.
- Classify data: distinguish temporary live-origin objects from persistent assets that must be retained.
- Choose the role for each component: evaluate S3 for a simple origin and MediaPackage for packaging or advanced workflow requirements; do not assume one service replaces every function.
- Verify current regional and feature support: check the AWS documentation for the exact regions, formats, and capabilities your workflow needs.
- Test the complete path: validate ingest, origin reads, packaging, player playback, protection, ad behavior, latency, and recovery before relying on the replacement in production.
- Escalate inaccessible data: if persistent objects could not be retrieved, contact AWS Support through the AWS account rather than assuming post-shutdown access.
