Recommended Free Tools
For a pre-recorded church service on YouTube Live, start with H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC stereo audio. Match the stream resolution and frame rate to your source: YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 or 8 Mbps for 720p30 H.264. The encoder’s loop control depends on the playback software or hardware you use; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not provide one universal loop button.
Recommended YouTube Live encoder settings
These are settings for sending a live feed to YouTube, not for encoding the video file you upload to a playback tool. Use the live-ingest recommendations below, then test the actual file and its loop transition in your chosen workflow.
| Setting | Starting point | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. |
| Video codec | H.264 | YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1. Choose a codec your encoder and workflow support. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube specifies constant bitrate encoding for live ingest. |
| Resolution and bitrate | 1080p30 H.264 at 14 Mbps, or 720p30 H.264 at 8 Mbps | Match the source and sustained upload capacity; do not upscale a lower-resolution recording needlessly. |
| Frame rate | Match the source, up to 60 fps | Avoid changing the source frame rate without a reason. |
| Keyframes | Every 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps | YouTube also permits MP3. For RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 audio is supported only with AAC. |
| SDR picture | Progressive, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit | These are YouTube’s advanced recommendations for SDR. |
Choose resolution, codec, and bitrate
YouTube’s recommended live bitrates vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Values in this table are Mbps for live ingest, not for encoding the uploaded source file.
| Resolution / frame rate | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For a mostly static pulpit or sanctuary shot, 1080p30 is a sensible starting choice when the recording is 1080p and the upload connection can sustain it. If the source is 720p or the connection cannot reliably carry the higher bitrate, use 720p30. For church services, check that lyrics, slides, faces, and other important details remain legible at the selected resolution. YouTube’s recommendations do not establish a church-specific quality ranking or a universal winner between codecs.

Allow upload headroom
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. For 14 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio, a simple 20% calculation suggests about 17.7 Mbps of stable capacity for this stream alone; other network traffic needs additional margin. That figure is calculated from YouTube’s bitrate and headroom recommendations, not a separately published threshold. A speed-test peak is not proof that the connection can sustain the bitrate throughout the service.
Set up and test the loop before the service
The loop is handled by the media playback or encoder workflow, not by a universal YouTube Live setting. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers ingest settings and operational checks but does not describe a step-by-step loop setup for every software or device. Use the loop control in the playback tool you have chosen, and verify its behavior before relying on it.

- Prepare the encoder early. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event.
- Use the live-ingest settings above. Enter the stream URL and stream key only in your chosen encoder. Keep the key private.
- Make a test stream. YouTube says to test before starting a live stream. Use media with similar audio and motion, and play the prerecorded file through a complete loop, including the transition from the end back to the beginning. This catches problems in the playback workflow that an encoder-settings check alone will miss.
- Check the preview. Confirm the feed appears in Live Control Room before the event. Check that the stream is available on the channel or watch page and can be accessed from a mobile device.
- Monitor the live feed. Watch stream health, warnings, and audio and video quality while the event runs.
Choose latency and DVR for the service
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind the live stream. Latency is the delay between capture and playback; choosing lower latency may increase buffering. For an unattended prerecorded loop, low latency is usually less important than stable playback. Decide whether DVR and near-real-time interaction matter to your congregation before prioritizing lower latency.
Troubleshoot common stream problems
- Stream health warns or the video buffers: The connection may not sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce the resolution or bitrate to a supported YouTube recommendation, stop competing network use where possible, and retain upload headroom.
- The encoder connects but the picture does not appear: Confirm the stream URL and key are entered correctly, the event is configured in Live Control Room, and the encoder is sending video with a supported codec and settings. Never share the stream key publicly.
- The recording stops at the end instead of restarting: The loop is controlled by your playback tool. Check its repeat/loop setting and test the end-to-start transition before the service; YouTube’s general encoder instructions do not supply a universal loop control.
- Audio is missing or unsuitable: Check that the encoder is sending an audio track. For the recommended stereo starting point, use AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; verify the audio in the preview and test recording.
- The image is soft or text is hard to read: Check the source resolution and whether the chosen stream resolution preserves the detail in slides and lyrics. Do not expect upscaling to restore detail absent from the recording.
Keep a prerecorded church stream running without a local encoder
If you want the DIY workflow, use the settings and testing steps above with your chosen playback and encoder tool. YouTube’s encoder documentation does not identify one universal application or loop procedure, so the exact interface steps depend on your software or hardware.

Use recordings, music, readings, and other material that the church has the rights or permissions to stream. A prerecorded file being available to the church does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it on YouTube. Review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream requirements before the event, and check that the channel and stream are configured for the intended audience and access.
