For a low-motion devotional stream sent to YouTube Live from a VPS, a practical starting point is H.264 at 720p30 with a 3 Mbps video bitrate, CBR, AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, and a keyframe every two seconds. These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest settings for 720p30—not a guarantee that a particular VPS or network route can sustain them. Test the actual VPS connection and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on it around the clock.
Recommended starting settings for YouTube Live
The title does not specify a destination platform, so the figures below are for YouTube Live. Other platforms may publish different ingest requirements. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends these H.264 video rates; it does not identify a publication or update year for the table.
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 with FFmpeg’s libx264 |
YouTube’s cited bitrate recommendations apply to H.264 ingest. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 720p at 30 fps for a static or low-motion scene | A restrained starting point for devotional imagery; use the source’s real aspect ratio and avoid unnecessary upscaling. |
| Video bitrate and rate control | 3 Mbps, CBR | YouTube recommends 3 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30. In FFmpeg, bitrate is expressed in bits per second, so use 3000k or 3000000. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; at 30 fps, 60 frames | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz | YouTube recommends 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo audio. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS. Copy the ingest address and stream key from YouTube Studio’s live control room. |
For 1080p30 H.264, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps video rather than 3 Mbps. A static image may encode acceptably at a lower rate than detailed motion, but the cited platform figures are the recommended targets, not a VPS capacity test. Consult YouTube Help’s live encoder settings for recommendations by codec, resolution and frame rate.
Adapt the FFmpeg command to your media
This command is an illustrative settings fragment for a single input file with usable video and audio. It assumes YouTube Live H.264 at 720p30. It is not a guaranteed production command: the correct mapping, scaling, frame-rate conversion, loop arrangement, ingest URL and key depend on your files and YouTube Studio configuration.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i devotional.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://<platform-ingest>/<stream-key>"
- Confirm the source. Check its resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, audio stream and codec before choosing filters or mappings. If the file has no audio, remove or change the audio options rather than assuming an audio stream exists. If music is a separate file, configure its input and mapping explicitly.
- Choose the output picture. The example sets 30 fps and encodes H.264. It does not scale to 720p; add an appropriate scaling filter only after checking the source dimensions and aspect ratio. Do not stretch a 4:3 image to fill a 16:9 frame.
- Set the rate and GOP.
-b:v 3000ksets the target video rate;-maxrate 3000kand-bufsize 6000kare example rate-control parameters, not a promise of identical behavior across all media.-g 60targets a two-second GOP at 30 fps. If you change frame rate, recalculate the GOP for the same interval. - Set audio deliberately. The example encodes stereo AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Use
-ac 2only if stereo output is intended and the input supports the desired mix. - Use your own ingest details. Replace the placeholder with the RTMPS ingest address and stream key supplied by YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, logs or published examples. If exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the running encoder.
- Test and monitor. Start with representative content, verify YouTube receives the expected resolution and audio, and watch stream health. For a continuous stream, also confirm the VPS can run the encoder and sustain outbound traffic for the full intended duration.
FFmpeg documents its command-line options, including bitrate handling, and the libx264 options. Do not assume -stream_loop -1 will handle a separate audio playlist or a multi-file sequence as intended; test the actual input arrangement.
Choose bitrate against both picture needs and VPS limits
Resolution alone does not determine a good setting. Consider the visual motion and detail, viewers’ likely devices and connections, YouTube’s ingest recommendations, the VPS’s sustained egress and traffic terms, and whether the VPS must encode or can send pre-encoded media. Encoding with libx264 consumes CPU; the available CPU and the chosen preset can affect whether the encoder keeps up in real time.

At the 720p30 example rate, 3 Mbps of video plus 128 kbps of audio totals 3.128 Mbps before transport overhead. Leave additional network headroom for overhead and bitrate variation. There is no established universal capacity figure for an India-based VPS: the provider, plan, region, route and usage limits are unspecified. YouTube Help advises users to test upload bitrate and monitor stream health. Run that test from the actual VPS rather than relying on a home connection speed test.
Keep the stream compliant and operational
Copyright and permission
Use devotional recordings, artwork, lyrics and other material only when you have the necessary rights or permission. Religious subject matter does not make a recording or image copyright-free. YouTube may interrupt or restrict a live stream if it detects content that violates its rules or rights-holder restrictions. Check the status of each recording and visual before scheduling it, and keep permission records where applicable. See the copyright safety checklist for a practical review.

Reused and repetitive content
A technically continuous stream is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies assess whether content is original and adds meaningful value; repeatedly broadcasting material you do not own or have transformed may create policy or rights issues. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies and do not treat an encoder setting as a substitute for compliance.
Protect the key and plan for interruptions
- Keep the stream key out of source code repositories, shared terminal histories and public process listings where possible; restrict script and log access.
- Use a stable VPS session manager or service supervisor if the process must restart after a crash, and verify that restarting the encoder does not create unwanted duplicate broadcasts.
- Check VPS traffic allowances and billing rules before leaving an outbound stream running continuously.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and VPS CPU, memory and network usage; a process that remains alive can still be sending an unhealthy stream.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate | The VPS route cannot sustain the configured output, or available headroom is too small. | Test outbound bitrate from the VPS, check provider traffic limits, reduce the target resolution or rate, and recheck stream health. |
| Stream connects but YouTube rejects or fails to receive it | Wrong ingest address or key, an expired/reset key, or a protocol mismatch. | Copy the current RTMPS address and key from YouTube Studio; confirm the command targets the correct platform endpoint. |
| Video stutters while the VPS is busy | Encoding cannot keep up with real time or CPU resources are constrained. | Inspect CPU usage, try a faster x264 preset or lower output resolution, then verify visual quality and stream health. |
| Video looks stretched, cropped or jerky | Source aspect ratio or frame rate does not match the assumed output. | Inspect input properties, choose appropriate scaling and frame-rate handling, and avoid blindly forcing dimensions or frame rate. |
| No audio, wrong channels or distorted sound | The input lacks an audio stream, mapping is wrong, or stereo conversion is unsuitable. | Inspect streams and mappings; adjust or remove audio options to match the actual source, then listen to the received stream. |
| Loop ends, repeats the wrong material or audio falls out of sync | A single-file loop option is being used with a playlist or separate audio layout it does not cover. | Test the exact inputs and loop method; configure separate audio and multiple files explicitly instead of assuming one loop flag handles them. |
| Stream drops after running for a while | VPS network interruption, resource pressure, process exit or platform-side disconnect. | Review FFmpeg and system logs without exposing the key, inspect VPS resources and YouTube health, then restart safely and confirm the live event is still correct. |
