Portfolio thumbnails usually look blurry because the browser is displaying an image with too few pixels for the grid cell and the screen’s pixel density—or because the source image itself is soft. Check the actual file the browser loaded, then make the image dimensions and responsive markup match the rendered size. web.dev’s image-performance guide explains how source pixels, CSS size, and device pixel ratio (DPR) work together.
Why portfolio thumbnails look blurry
A grid cell has a rendered width in CSS pixels, but a display may use multiple physical pixels for each CSS pixel. If the browser has to enlarge a source image—or selects a candidate too small for the cell and screen density—the thumbnail can look soft. The right source size therefore depends on both the rendered slot and the device’s DPR, not just the CSS width.
For illustration, web.dev uses a 500 CSS-pixel image slot: 500 source pixels at DPR 1, 1,000 at DPR 2, and 1,500 at DPR 3. These are examples of pixel-density arithmetic, not universal minimum dimensions. A 300 CSS-pixel slot on a DPR 2 display would need about 600 source pixels for a one-source-pixel-per-device-pixel match.
Find the cause before changing the images
- Measure the rendered slot. At the affected viewport, inspect the thumbnail’s width in CSS pixels. Include the real grid layout and breakpoints; a cell may change size as columns or gaps change.
- Check the file that actually loaded. In browser developer tools, inspect the Network panel for the requested image and its intrinsic dimensions. In the console,
document.querySelector('.portfolio img').currentSrcshows the selected URL for the first matching image. Replace.portfolio imgwith a selector for your own thumbnail. - Compare source width, slot width, and DPR. Check
window.devicePixelRatioin the console. If the source has fewer pixels than the rendered slot multiplied by the relevant DPR, the browser may be enlarging it. - Check crop and composition. If the image is sharp but the subject seems too small, misplaced, or cut off, the problem may be the chosen crop rather than resolution. Responsive art direction can serve a different crop for a particular layout.
- Compare with the original asset. If the original is already soft or heavily compressed, responsive markup cannot restore lost detail. Inspect the source and image-processing pipeline before creating larger versions.

Use responsive image candidates for a fluid grid
For a grid whose cells change width, provide multiple files using width descriptors in srcset and describe the expected CSS-pixel slot in sizes. CSS still controls the displayed layout; sizes tells the browser what width to expect so it can choose among the candidates. If sizes understates the actual slot, the browser may select an image that is too small.

>The example assumes thumbnails are about 360 CSS pixels wide on wide viewports, around 45% of viewport width on medium screens, and around 90% on narrow screens. Adjust the conditions and widths to match your own grid, including its gaps, container width, and maximum width. Each w descriptor must match the file’s actual intrinsic width; it is not a display-size instruction.

After adding or changing candidates, revisit the affected viewport and inspect currentSrc or the Network panel. Confirm that the selected file’s dimensions make sense for the cell and DPR. The browser’s choice can depend on its understanding of viewport size and device density as well as the candidate list and sizes.
Fixed-size thumbnails
If a thumbnail truly has a fixed CSS size, provide a source with enough pixels for that size and the display densities you intend to support. Density-descriptor candidates can be suitable for a fixed-size image; width-descriptor candidates are generally more useful when the grid cell changes with the layout.

Choose the right image workflow

Chrome describes responsive variants and image CDNs as approaches for serving suitably sized images. Cloudflare’s responsive-image documentation, last updated May 26, 2026, gives a vendor example of responsive delivery and high-DPI variants. The appropriate workflow depends on your asset volume and stack, not on a requirement to buy a service.
Keep clarity without sending unnecessarily large files
First choose source dimensions that can supply the displayed slot at the relevant density; then tune format and compression. WebP and AVIF can reduce file size compared with PNG or JPEG, but changing the encoding does not add detail missing from an undersized source. Conversely, sending the full-size original to every visitor can waste bytes when a smaller candidate would suffice.

When the file dimensions appear adequate but the result is still soft, inspect the original, crop, and compression settings rather than increasing every image by default. There is no single compression-quality setting established for all portfolio photography.
