Set the keyframe interval in the encoder that sends your live stream to YouTube to 2 seconds. If the setting uses frames, calculate the number from your output frame rate: at 30 fps, use 60 frames. YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. If the warning persists, verify the live output setting and inspect YouTube’s stream health rather than changing unrelated recording settings.
What the keyframe interval warning means
A keyframe, also called an I-frame, is a full reference frame in the video stream. The keyframe interval describes how often one is sent. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance says the encoder may be sending keyframes too often or not often enough. A too-small GOP can reduce image quality; an interval that is too long can contribute to buffering. The specific warning and reported interval help distinguish these cases. YouTube’s live streaming error guidance describes the warning, while its encoder settings guidance recommends a 2-second interval and a maximum of 4 seconds.
Set the interval to 2 seconds
- Open the live streaming output settings. In the encoder or streaming software, open the settings for the output that sends video to YouTube. Do not change a recording-only output.
- Find the keyframe or GOP control. Look for a setting named Keyframe Interval, Keyframe Frequency, or GOP interval. Names and locations depend on the software, encoder, and version. OBS documents a keyframe interval control; its NVENC guidance also describes frame-based intervals and the custom
keyintoption. OBS streaming encoder settings. - Enter a 2-second interval. If the field accepts seconds, enter 2. If it accepts frames, multiply the output frame rate by 2. For example, at 30 fps, enter 60 frames. Recalculate if you change the output frame rate. YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Choose Closed GOP if that option is available. YouTube says its pipeline requires a Closed GOP for optimal transcoding when the encoder exposes an Open/Closed GOP choice. YouTube live encoder settings.
- Test and check stream health. Start a test stream with representative motion and audio, then review YouTube’s stream health and messages before relying on the setup for a live event. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. YouTube live streaming error guidance.
Check these settings if the warning returns

There is no single established cause for every persistent warning. Confirm the active configuration and use stream diagnostics before concluding that an encoder is defective.
