There is no single setting that makes a chosen image appear beside every Indian business listing on a phone. First identify the Google surface you mean: a website image preview in Search, a Google Business Profile photo, a favicon, or a Google Discover image. Each has different requirements, and Google decides whether and how to display eligible images.
Identify which mobile thumbnail you want to change
“Thumbnail” can refer to several distinct images. A website image preview may appear with an ordinary Google Search result; a favicon is the small site icon beside a result; Business Profile photos appear on the business’s Google listing; and Discover uses a separate large-image system. Search results can also vary by device, country, language, and query, so the same listing may not look identical to every viewer in India.
- Website Search preview: Improve the image available on the relevant page and allow an appropriate preview size.
- Business Profile photo: Upload the photo directly to the business’s Google Business Profile.
- Favicon: Configure the site icon separately from page images.
- Discover image: Follow Discover’s large-image guidance; it is not a universal local Search thumbnail requirement.
Prepare an image that represents the business
Choose a clear, well-lit, in-focus photograph of the actual premises, products, services, or people associated with the business. Avoid deceptive composites and heavy filters. Google Business Profile guidance says photos should represent reality and should not be significantly altered.
For photos uploaded to a Google Business Profile, Google specifies JPG or PNG files from 10 KB to 5 MB, recommends 720 × 720 pixels, and sets 250 × 250 pixels as the minimum. These specifications apply to Business Profile photos—not to every image that might appear as a website Search preview.

Improve the image available to mobile Search
Use a relevant image on the right page
Place an authentic, representative image on the page that describes the business, location, product, or service. Keep its URL stable and make sure Google can crawl the image. Google uses the mobile version of a site’s content for indexing and ranking, so ensure the important image and its associated page information are available on mobile rather than only on desktop.
Allow a large image preview when appropriate
The max-image-preview robots directive sets the maximum image-preview size that Google may show. The large value permits a large preview. It does not select a particular image, force Google to display one, or guarantee that a thumbnail will appear. Google retains control over the Search presentation.

Use structured data to describe the business
LocalBusiness structured data can describe business details and include image URLs. Those images should be crawlable, indexable, and representative of the marked-up business to be eligible for relevant Search experiences. Structured data is a way to provide information, not a command that guarantees an image thumbnail.
Google’s advice for restaurant carousel eligibility includes multiple high-resolution images in 16:9, 4:3, and 1:1 ratios. That is surface-specific advice for restaurants, not a general image rule for all local business listings.

Upload photos directly to a Google Business Profile
If you want a photo on the business’s Google listing rather than beside its website result, add it to the Business Profile. Google says the profile must be verified for photos to show. A selected cover photo is not guaranteed to remain the first photo shown; Google may choose another image. New uploads can take 24–48 hours to appear after review.
- Sign in to the Google account that manages the business profile.
- Open the business’s Google Business Profile and choose the option to add or upload photos.
- Select clear, authentic JPG or PNG photos that meet the Business Profile file and size specifications.
- Allow time for Google’s review and display process; a chosen cover image may not be the first image shown.
Configure the favicon separately
If the small icon beside a website result is wrong or missing, update the site’s favicon rather than changing its page thumbnail image. Google recommends a representative square favicon larger than 48 × 48 pixels; the minimum is 8 × 8 pixels. Keep the favicon URL stable and ensure Google can crawl both the icon and the homepage. Meeting these conditions makes the icon eligible, but does not guarantee that Google will display it.

Do not apply Discover or Business Profile dimensions to every thumbnail
Google recommends an image at least 1200 pixels wide for the large-image presentation described for Discover. This recommendation is specific to Discover and is not a universal size requirement for a mobile local Search preview. Likewise, the 720 × 720 recommended Business Profile photo size applies to that product’s photo uploads, not every website image.
Check the result and troubleshoot the likely cause
- The website image does not appear in Search: Google controls whether an image appears and which image it selects. Confirm that the image is on the relevant page, crawlable, representative, and accessible on the mobile version; allowing a large preview only sets a maximum preview size.
- The wrong image appears: Make sure the page offers a more relevant, representative image and that Google can access it. Neither structured data nor an image-preview directive forces Google to choose a particular image.
- A Business Profile photo is missing: Check that the profile is verified and allow for review and processing, which can take 24–48 hours for a new upload.
- The chosen cover photo is not first: Google may select a different Business Profile photo for display; choosing a cover does not guarantee its position.
- The icon is missing or incorrect: Check that the favicon is square, its URL is stable, and Google can crawl the icon and homepage. Eligibility still does not ensure display.
- The result differs on another phone or in another location: Search presentation can vary by device, country, language, and query.

No. You can make an image accessible and permit a larger preview, but Google chooses whether to show an image and which one.
Are Business Profile photo dimensions the same as website image-preview dimensions?
