Short answer: YouTube’s live-stream encoder guidance supports H.264 over RTMP/RTMPS but does not specify whether to use Baseline, Main, or High. Choose a profile your encoder and the rest of your workflow support, then test a representative stream and check YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s High Profile recommendation for prerecorded uploads does not settle the live-stream question.
What YouTube specifies for live H.264
YouTube lists H.264 as a supported video codec for RTMP/RTMPS live streams. Its published live encoder settings do not name Baseline, Main, or High as a preferred H.264 profile. The page says YouTube will automatically detect the encoder settings you chose, but that does not mean it recommends one of these profiles. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance is the reference for the settings it does publish.
In that guidance, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (and says not to exceed 4 seconds), and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its advanced settings include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. For SDR, it specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit. These settings are separate from the H.264 profile choice.
Set the profile alongside the other encoder settings
Use the resolution and frame-rate row that matches your intended stream when choosing an H.264 bitrate. YouTube’s table gives these examples:

These are YouTube’s published H.264 ingestion bitrate figures, not profile-specific recommendations. The table also contains other resolutions and frame rates; consult the full live settings and bitrate table if your format differs. Use CBR and configure the recommended keyframe interval independently of Baseline, Main, or High.
- Check your encoder and workflow. Confirm which H.264 profiles your encoder supports and whether any downstream equipment or software in your delivery chain imposes a requirement. YouTube’s live guidance does not provide a compatibility matrix for the three profiles.
- Choose a profile supported across that chain. Do not treat YouTube’s live settings page as a reason to select High, Main, or Baseline; it does not rank them.
- Match the stream’s other settings to YouTube’s guidance. Set CBR, the appropriate bitrate for your resolution and frame rate, a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and the relevant SDR color settings where applicable.
- Test before the event. YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream. Run the same profile and output settings you intend to use, then review stream health and fix any encoder or delivery issues before going live.
- Monitor the live stream. Watch YouTube’s stream health during the event and respond to warnings. If a problem appears, check the encoder’s current documentation and verify the complete workflow rather than assuming the profile alone is responsible.
Do not confuse live H.264 with upload or HDR instructions
Prerecorded video uploads
YouTube recommends H.264 High Profile for prerecorded uploads in its recommended upload encoding settings. That recommendation applies to uploads; it does not establish a preferred profile for H.264 live ingest.

Live HDR
YouTube’s HDR guidance describes HEVC/H.265. In its OBS instructions, YouTube says to choose Main 10 (the default is Main) for the hardware HEVC encoder. Main 10 is an HEVC profile, not an H.264 profile. See YouTube’s HDR streaming instructions for that separate workflow.
When profile-specific advice depends on your encoder
A particular encoder or delivery chain may have its own profile requirements or compatibility limits. YouTube’s reviewed live settings guidance does not establish which profile is best for a specific product, nor compare the quality or compatibility of Baseline, Main, and High. If you need an exact product-specific setting, check the encoder’s current documentation and any intermediary hardware or software documentation. Then test the full path to YouTube before relying on it for an event.
