For a 1080p YouTube livestream, use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the stream’s frame rate and ingestion codec: H.264 at 10 Mbps for 30 fps or 17 Mbps for 60 fps; AV1 or H.265/HEVC at 10 Mbps for 30 fps or 12 Mbps for 60 fps. YouTube does not list a separate bitrate for 24/7 streams or animated backgrounds, so test with movement like the animation you plan to broadcast.
Recommended 1080p bitrate by frame rate and codec
The figures below are YouTube’s published ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular picture quality or uninterrupted operation. Choose the row for the codec and frame rate your encoder will actually send. [YouTube’s live encoder settings]

At 1080p30, YouTube gives the same recommendation for both codec groupings. At 1080p60, the recommendation differs: 17 Mbps for H.264 versus 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. The minimum is not the recommended target; use the recommended figure as your starting setting when your encoder and connection can sustain it.
Settings to use in your encoder
- Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends for live ingestion.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: Configure the encoder for 1080p and the intended 30 or 60 fps, then select the corresponding bitrate row above.
- Protocol and codec: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Confirm which codec your encoder is actually sending rather than assuming the codec from an output label.
These are encoder-to-YouTube ingest settings. They do not determine a viewer’s playback bitrate or guarantee that every viewer receives 1080p; YouTube processes live video for playback.

Does an animated background need a higher bitrate?
YouTube’s published table does not add a bitrate tier for animation, background motion, or continuous broadcast duration. Its guidance is organized by codec, resolution, and frame rate. A mostly static scene may behave differently from a scene with persistent movement, but the supplied table does not quantify that difference. Start with the matching recommended value, then test the actual animation at the intended frame rate and inspect the result.
Test before leaving a stream unattended
- In your encoder, set 1080p, the intended frame rate, codec, CBR, the matching recommended bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and check it in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it. Include audio and movement similar to the eventual broadcast; YouTube specifically recommends testing with comparable movement and audio. [YouTube encoder settings guidance]
- Review the preview for visual breakup, stuttering, audio problems, or a mismatch between the intended and incoming resolution or frame rate.
- Monitor the stream-health indicator and its messages during the test. YouTube’s guidance distinguishes critical from moderate errors; address the reported issue rather than treating the bitrate number alone as proof the stream is healthy. [Encoder settings] [Live Control Room errors]
- Repeat the test for long enough to expose problems that might arise during extended operation. The bitrate table itself does not establish that a computer, encoder, network, or power supply can run unattended for 24 hours.
Latency is a separate choice
Bitrate is not the same setting as stream latency. YouTube notes that choosing lower latency can increase playback buffering for viewers. Decide on latency based on how much real-time interaction matters, then test playback stability; changing latency does not replace choosing the correct codec-and-frame-rate bitrate. What bitrate cannot solve in a 24/7 broadcast
A bitrate setting alone cannot promise an uninterrupted 24/7 stream. With a do-it-yourself encoder, continued operation also depends on the computer, encoder process, network connection, and power, as well as a plan for recovery if the stream stops. YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not provide a complete unattended-uptime recipe. A professional-grade hardware encoder may suit higher-production-value events, but YouTube does not say one is required for a looping animated background.
