For a YouTube radio stream built around a still image, start with YouTube’s encoder recommendations: RTMPS if your encoder supports it, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds). Choose a resolution and bitrate your internet connection can sustain steadily. YouTube does not publish a special lower-bitrate profile for static-image streams, so a still picture is not a reason to assume any particular bitrate will work.

The settings below reflect YouTube’s guidance as accessed on October 3, 2026. The listed bitrates are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of stable performance on a particular encoder or connection.

Recommended settings for a static-image radio stream

Use these as a starting point in your encoder. If an option is unavailable, use a supported alternative rather than forcing an incompatible setting.

Setting Recommended starting point Notes
Ingestion protocol RTMPS YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.
Video codec H.264 YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1. Pick a codec supported by both your encoder and workflow.
Bitrate mode CBR Constant bitrate is YouTube’s recommended mode.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
Frame rate 30 fps is a practical starting point for a still-image presentation YouTube supports up to 60 fps but does not prescribe a frame rate specifically for radio streams with a static image.
Audio codec AAC or MP3 YouTube’s advanced-setting recommendation is 128 kbps stereo audio at a 44.1 kHz sample rate.
SDR color Rec. 709, 8-bit This applies to the video feed even when the image does not change.

Bitrate by resolution and codec

YouTube’s published recommended video bitrates are below. They are encoder ingestion targets, not minimum requirements or a promise that your upload connection can hold them reliably. YouTube does not provide a separate official target for a static image.

Choose a setting your upload connection can sustain with headroom for normal variation and other network use. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into multiple output formats, so you do not need to send a separate feed for each viewer’s playback quality. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance does not establish that a static image permits a particular bitrate reduction.

Set up the stream in YouTube Studio

  1. Create the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule the stream. Set its title, description, visibility, and other metadata. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility.
  2. Get the ingest details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. The key identifies where your encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if it is compromised.
  3. Configure the encoder. Set the protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings using the table above as a baseline. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; a custom stream key can be used when you need manual resolution settings.
  4. Test before going public. Start with a test or unlisted stream and preview the incoming feed in Live Control Room. Confirm that the still image is framed correctly and that audio is present, clean, and continuous.
  5. Check stream health while live. Watch the Live Control Room’s health messages and audio/video preview during the broadcast. If YouTube reports a problem, use its message to guide a change to the encoder or connection rather than raising the bitrate blindly.

Choose latency, visibility, and DVR for radio listeners

A non-interactive radio stream usually has little need for the lowest possible latency. YouTube notes that lower-latency settings can increase playback buffering; choose them when real-time interaction matters enough to accept that trade-off. DVR lets viewers pause or rewind while the live broadcast continues. Decide whether that convenience fits the listening experience you want, then select the matching options in the stream settings. YouTube’s stream management guidance explains the available controls.

Plan for the 12-hour archive limitation

Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, make a local recording as a backup. If you need distinct archives, scheduled stops and restarts are a practical approach, but YouTube’s warning does not guarantee how any individual session will be archived. See YouTube’s stream archiving guidance for the limitation.

Confirm music rights before you go live

A static image does not change the rights required for the music. YouTube’s livestream terms say stream providers must have the necessary rights for both live and archived content, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination. Even licensed third-party music can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID.

Before broadcasting, confirm that your rights cover the intended live use, territories, and any retained archive. Ask the rights owner whether channel allowlisting is required and verify it is in place. Consult YouTube’s Terms of Service and YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams; having permission from a music provider does not by itself establish that Content ID will allow the stream to continue.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

What you see What to check What to do
YouTube receives no feed Stream URL, stream key, encoder status, and selected protocol Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm they are entered correctly, and start the encoder again. Reset the key if you suspect it was exposed.
Stream-health warnings or unstable video Whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate, and whether other network use is competing for capacity Test the connection, leave headroom, and lower resolution or bitrate if needed. Re-test and monitor health messages rather than relying on a speed-test result alone.
Image appears wrong or is missing Encoder output resolution, image framing, and the Live Control Room preview Correct the encoder’s output or image layout, then verify the preview before making the broadcast public.
No audio, distorted audio, or gaps Audio source routing, AAC/MP3 selection, sample rate, and continuity of the source file or playlist Confirm the encoder is receiving the intended audio, use a supported codec, and run a test long enough to catch interruptions.
Music is replaced or the live stream is interrupted Third-party content detection, the scope of the music rights, and channel allowlisting Contact the rights owner to verify live and archive permissions and any Content ID allowlisting requirement. A video setting change cannot resolve a rights issue.
No complete replay appears after a long broadcast Whether the session exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive warning threshold Use a local recording for a complete copy. For separate replay segments, plan session boundaries; automatic capture is not guaranteed for sessions over 12 hours.
